Cruisingvibo Valentia CruisingVibo Valentia Itinerari per scoprire dal mare una nuova affascinante provincia d’Italia Itineraries to discover a new enchanting province of Italy coming from the sea Presentazione Le nuove prospettive di sviluppo del mercato crocieristico, in Italia e nel mondo, inducono a pensare ad un migliore riposizionamento dei porti di Vibo Marina e di Tropea. In particolare il Porto di Vibo Marina, per le sue caratteristiche tecniche e per i progetti di ampliamento e di potenzia- mento previsti nel prossimo futuro, sin da ora si candida ad essere scalo per le navi da crociera che solcano il Mediterraneo. Per questo, e proprio partendo dal Porto di Vibo Marina, la Camera di Commercio di Vibo Valentia ha inteso ripensare il territorio della provincia in altra prospetti- va, ovvero con gli occhi di chi viene dal mare, a bordo di una nave da cro- ciera o navigando in barca a motore o a vela, e vuole avventurarsi, anche nell’arco breve di un giorno, per scoprire le innumerevoli ricchezze natu- ralistiche, culturali e storiche di questa affascinante terra del Sud d’Italia. È così, rivisitando due lavori in precedenza realizzati dall’Ente,“Il giardino di Proserpina” ed il più recente “I porti della provincia di Vibo Valentia. Discove- ring Vibo Valentia from the sea”, abbiamo voluto proporre il territorio provin- ciale in un’ottica nuova e originale, immaginando come sua porta di ingresso le storiche banchine del porto di Vibo Marina, anche noto come Porto Santa Venere. Nasce allora Cruising Vibo Valentia. Due gli obiettivi immediati: il primo, presentare ai tour operator ed alle compa- gnie di navigazione una nuova possibilità di scalo per piccole e medie na- vi da crociera, in una area ad alta vocazione turistica (ogni anno si registrano oltre 2.000.000 di presenze con oltre il 30% di stranieri) in un porto piccolo ma ben attrezzato ed accogliente che può offrire nuovi sti- moli e nuove emozioni. Il secondo, cominciare ad ipotizzare, oltre che a documentare, nuove prospettive di intervento in grado di connettere i progetti di sviluppo di questa provincia alla programmazione strategica regionale 2007-2013, che individua ancora nel turismo e nelle sue varie formule di destagionalizzazione uno degli assi più importanti per lo svi- luppo della Calabria. D’altra parte, la candidatura del porto di Vibo Ma- rina a scalo crocieristico, viene suffragata anche dalla dimostrata capacità di poter bene assecondare anche questa vocazione. Nel corso del 2007, infatti, per ben due volte, la nave Sapphire ha scelto di far tappa a Vibo Marina, per fare visitare in bicicletta ai suoi 400 passeggeri tedeschi la co- sta vibonese, la città di Tropea e l’Altopiano del Poro e sempre nel 2007 e poi nel 2008 ha fatto scalo per tre volte la nave Adriana, con a bordo ol- tre 300 turisti francesi che da Vibo Marina hanno visitato Tropea ed altri luoghi della Calabria. Consideriamo questo un importante e significativo prologo di un più strutturato e costante programma per elevare il porto di Vibo Marina a scalo crocieristico di qualità dotato di una efficiente fi- liera di servizi. In questa direzione la Camera di Commercio intensifiche- rà le relazioni con gli operatori del settore affinché la provincia possa diventare riferimento per viaggiatori e naviganti lungo le rotte del Medi- terraneo e nuova destinazione per nuovi sogni. Il Commissario Michele Lico Presentation New prospects of development of the cruise holiday market, in Italy and in the world, necessitate a better exploitation of the ports of Vibo Marina ad Tropea. In particular the port of Vibo Marina, due to its technical characteristics and the plans for its next development, is al- ready putting itself forward as a port of call for cruise ships plying the Mediterranean. For this reason and starting from the port of Vibo Ma- rina, the Chamber of Commerce of Vibo Valentia has decided to think about the territory in a different perspective, beginning from the point of view of somebody arriving by sea, on a cruise ship or in a motor boat or yacht, who wants to venture into this small but fascinating area of southern Italy and discover its boundless natural, cultural and historical wealth, even if only for a day. Thus, having re-examined two previously produced by our organization, “Il giardino di Proserpina” - “The garden of Persephone” and the more recent “I porti della provincia di Vibo Valentia. Discovering Vibo Valentia from the sea”, we wanted to visit and present the provincial territory in a new and original light, imagining the historic quays of the port of Vibo Marina, also known as Porto Santa Venere, as the gateway. So Cruising Vibo Valentia has seen the light. It has two immediate objectives. The first is to highlight the potential of our province in the sector of cruise tourism, by presenting tour operators and shipping companies with a new port of call option for small and medi- um-sized cruise ship, in an area of high tourist influx (every year two mil- lion tourists per day come here with 30% from abroad) and in a small but well-equipped and welcoming port: an element of “novelty” in tourist packages which can introduce new stimuli and emotions into the experience of travelling. The second objective is to begin to hypothesize, as well as document, new prospects of intervention capable to link this province to the regional strategic programming for 2007-2013, which has once again identified tourism and various formula for prolonging the tourist season, as one of the most important points for the development of Calabria. However, the candidature of Vibo Marina as a cruise stop, is supported by the shown capacity of its infrastructure to be able to back up this vocation. In fact, during 2007, the ship Sapphire decided to stop off in Vibo Marina twice, thus offering its four hundred German passen- gers the opportunity to bike the Vibonese coast with the city of Tropea and the Poro Uplands. Then, again in 2007 and 2008, the ship Adriana made three calls to allow its three hundred French passengers to visit Tropea and the rest of Calabria. We consider this an important begin- ning to promote the port of Vibo Marina as a high-quality cruise port with an efficient network of services. The Chamber of Commerce will intensify relations with touroperators so that our province can become a reference for travellers and anyone sailing along Mediterranean routes and a new destination for new dreams. Al largo di Vibo Marina, sotto il corno del Monte Ipponio, l’attuale Vibo Valentia, avrete potuto osservare la maestosità della nobile Tropea, la marina storica di Pizzo, l’altopiano del Poro e la catena delle Serre vibonesi. Alle spalle vi sarete lasciate sospese tra mare e cielo le “ballerine” Isole Eolie. Il golfo con il suo pullulare di piccoli borghi antichi vi rimanderà alle fantasie di Odisseo: a Temesa, a Terina, alla Rocca di Crissa, i siti dei coloni della Magna Grecia insieme a Hipponion, l’antico nome di Vibo Valentia. In queste anse, tra Tropea e la valle dell’Angitola approdarono nel corso dei millenni fenici, etruschi, greci, arabi, bizantini, longobar- di, normanni, svevi, angioini e aragonesi. Mercanti e monaci diedero nome e ricchezza alle contrade marine e montane: basiliani, cistercensi, certosini, benedettini, francescani, domenicani introdussero innovazioni e saperi come testimoniano veri e propri Musei all’aperto, sparsi sul territorio. IN CROCIERA A VIBO VALENTIA 4 Cruising Vibo Valentia Coming from the sea, the pilot skilfully steers into the dock of San- ta Venere, now the port of Vibo Marina, a mile from the ancient Roman landing place of Agatocles, Pompey and Caesar. Off Vibo Marina, beneath the horn of Mount Hipponion, now Vi- bo Valentia, you will have seen the grandeur of aristocratic Tropea, the historical harbour of Pizzo, the upland of Monte Poro and the chain of the Vibonese Serre Mountains. Behind you, suspended be- tween sea and sky are the “dancers”, the Aeolian Islands. The gulf with its small, teeming old towns will remind you of the legends of the Odyssey: of Temesa, Terina and the Rock of Crissa, the sites of the ancient Greek colonies, as well as Hip- ponion, the old name for Vibo Valentia. Over the course of thousands of years, many different peoples landed in these bays between Tropea and the Angitola valley: Phoenicians, Etruscans, Greeks, Arabs, Byzantines, Longobards, Normans, Swabians, Angevins and the Aragonese. Stupisce subito il verde delle vicine colline aspettandosi molti, con- siderato il viaggio lungo le coste calde del Sud d’Italia, di doversi trovare dinanzi una terra arida. Un ridente tratto di strada con la presenza di graziosi villini vi im- metterà lungo la strada principale di Vibo Marina costeggiata da maestosi esemplari di palme e di ficus repens dalla caratteristica for- ma quadrata.

    Representing the Past. Social Anthropology and History of Art in a Holy Drama in Northern Italy Foreword In this seminar, I would like to briefly illustrate, also using some images, the study I am working on in Cerveno, a small valley town in the Italian Alps. This involves, as is customary in cultural and social anthropology, a phase of fieldwork, which began with my first visits in March 2011 and is still in progress. This will culminate in the observation of a religious representation, which I will discuss later, on May 20 2012. My fieldwork also involved an exploration of the local civil and religious archives, which was obviously crucial in understanding the phenomenon being studied, as well as raising a whole range of as yet unanswered questions for the ethnographer. There is also a phase of study linked to a precise theoretical and methodological problem, taking place in New York with the precious contribution of the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies at Columbia University which, in the persons of its Director, David Freedberg, I would like to thank. I am grateful for the generosity and warmth of his hospitality, and for the precious information I am acquiring in my stay here. Obviously today I will be giving you merely, in a somewhat provisional form, my first impressions of a research project that promises to be extremely long and difficult. O. INTRODUCTION In today’s conditions of building a netting of Basilian monasteries, it becomes necessary to turn to the historical experience of managing monastic communities. After all, the system of administrative management of the Christian ascetic centers has undergone a certain evolution from the complete autonomy (each monastery had its own charter and was independent of each other) to the gradual legal submission to the local bishops first, and subsequently there was a re-subordination to the newly formed authorities of the Proto-Hegumen and the Proto-Archimandrite. The introduction of these governing institutions in the Union Church allowed the creation of an autonomous system of administrative control of the Basilian monasticism, which was subjected neither to the local rulers nor to the Metropolitan of Kiev, and instead it was subjected to papal law. The answer to this right applies to all provinces of the Basilian Order subordinated to the Pope. The considered management system was borrowed from the administrative organization of the Roman Catholic monasteries for a more effective manner of union monastic communities. Accordingly, in our time, when there is a reform of the system of governance, the conditional development of church institutions and the development of society is reflected in the regular updating of the Constitutions of the Order of St. Basil the Great (hereinafter OSBM), it becomes necessary to examine the historical and legal aspects of the establishment of governance institutions that continue to operate in the modern Greek-Catholic Church, which is considered to be the successor to the Union Church.
