Our postlude today is “Nun komm' der Heiden Heiland” (Now Come **A note regarding the anthem Savior of the Gentiles), BWV 659 by J.S. Bach. It is performed by organist John Scott playing on the Taylor & Boody pipe organ in the Our anthem today, “E’en So, Lord Jesus, Quickly Come”, is a motet Gallery of Saint Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue in NYC. The composed in 1953 by Paul Manz to word adapted by Ruth Manz from performance was filmed by Joe Vitacco in January of 2014, and the text found in the Book of Revelation. Paul and Ruth Manz wrote "E'en recording is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gQ-7caubYk. So, Lord Jesus, Quickly Come" in 1953 during a time when their three- year-old son was critically ill. Reflecting on the time, Ruth Manz "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland" is a of 1524 with reported, "I think we'd reached the point where we felt that time was words written by , based on "Veni redemptor gentium" by certainly running out so we committed it to the Lord and said, 'Lord Ambrose. The melody, Zahn 1174, was composed by Luther and Jesus quickly come'". During this time, she had prepared some text for possibly , based on the original plainchant melodies, such Paul for a composition based on the Book of Revelation. While at his as a 12th-century version from Einsiedeln. The hymn was printed in the son's bedside, Paul Manz began drafting the composition, which later in 1524, and was also published the same year in became the current piece. Their son did recover, which the couple Walter's choral Wittenberg hymnal, Eyn geystlich Gesangk Buchleyn. J.S. attributed to the power of prayer. Bach used the melody several times and in several forms, as chorale preludes and cantatas. BWV 659 is one of three chorale preludes (BWV The text of the piece comes from a number of verses in the Book of 660 and 661). Revelation, much of which is drawn from chapter 22. For example, the last verse of the motet’s text: John Scott (1956 – 2015) was a world-class organist and gifted choir trainer. Since 2004 he had been organist and director of music of Saint And night shall be no more; Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York, and before that of St Paul’s they need no light nor lamp nor sun, Cathedral, London. He was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, to Gavin, a general physician, and Hetty (nee Murphy). As a boy he was a chorister at Wakefield Cathedral and while still at Queen Elizabeth grammar school gained the diplomas of the Royal College of Organists and won prizes. As a teenager, he would regularly accompany Wakefield Cathedral Choir: before one concert in a local church, the organist there described the instrument as “rubbish”, but John made it sound so good that the campaign to have it replaced was put back by years.

His association with St Paul’s Cathedral, London began in 1978, as assistant organist both there and at Southwark Cathedral, south of the River Thames. In 1990, he became organist and director of music at St Paul’s. In 2004, he served as organist and music director at St. Thomas, New York until his sudden death in 2015. He made many contributions to church music and performance. One of the many obituaries tells us, “ A man of deep faith and quiet integrity, John cared about the liturgy, set exacting standards and achieved a rare quality of performance: every service was important. Many of the singers he guided went on to become professionals.”

In a statement prior to the performance we hear today, John Scott said, “The centerpiece of the set is a triptych of settings based on the Advent hymn "Nun komm der Heiden Heiland." The first of these, BWV 659, is a quietly rhapsodic decoration of the chorale melody in the right hand, a phrase at a time, over a walking bass line. This is accompanied by two other voices that begin by foreshadowing the chorale melody.”
