THE ORGAN WORKS of HEALEY WILLAN THESIS Presented to The
{ to,26?5 THE ORGAN WORKS OF HEALEY WILLAN THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State College in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Master of Music By Robert L. Massingham, B. S., M. S. Denton, Texas August, 1957 PREFACE LHealey Willan occupies an unique position in Canadian Music and can be considered as that nation's "elder musical statesman." At the time of writing he is a septuagenarian and still very much active in his profession. Born and trained in England, he was well-established there when he was persuaded to come to Toronto, Canada, in 1913 at the age of thirty-three. Since that time he has contributed enor- iously to the growth of music in his adopted country, carry- ing on the traditions of his fine English background in music while encouraging the development of native individuality in Canadian music. Iillan has been first and foremost a musician of the church--an organist and choirmaster--a proud field which can boast many an eminent name in music including that of J. S. Bach. Willan's creativity in music has flowered in many other directions--as a distinguished teacher, as a lecturer and recitalist, and as a composer. He has written in all forms and for all instruments, but his greatest renown, at any rate in the TUnited States, is for his organ and choral works. The latter constitute his largest single body of compositions by numerical count of titles, and his organ works are in a close second place. iii Willants Introduction, Passaqaglia, and Fuue has been well-known for decades as one of the finest compositions in organ literature, enjoying a position alongside the organ works of Liszt, Yranck, and Reubke. -

These changes flow from a theology of action and its understanding of worship has significantly (liturgy as the work of the people), which emphasizes altered the Lutheran understanding of baptism and the fact that the church or the congregation is the confirmation. The theological foundation of LBW has mediating agent of God’s saving activity (p. 33).6 For influenced other Lutheran church bodies, contributing LBW the sacraments are understood significantly to profound changes in the Lutheran ecclesiologically—as actions of the congregation (pp. landscape. As Truscott wrote, those crafting the 205-206)—rather than soteriologically—as God acting baptismal liturgy in LBW would have to “overturn” old to give his people grace and forgiveness. This leads to an theologies of baptism, deal with “a theology that” emphasis on baby drama, water drama, and other believed in “the necessity of baptism for salvation,” and congregational acts (pp. 24–26, 220). Seventh Sunday After Pentecost 7/11/21 Service Book and Hymnal and Lutheran Book of Worship - Setting Two GOD GATHERS US IN EVERY PLACE AS HIS HOLY PEOPLE PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Please stand as you are able. In remembrance of Baptism, you may sign a cross on your chest or forehead. We gather in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. THE CONFESSION OF SINS (adapted from SBH p.1) Hebrews 10:22; Psalm 124:8, 32:5; John 3:16 Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart, and confess our sins unto God our Father, asking him, in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the Name of the Lord. Who made heaven and earth. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord. And he forgave the iniquity of my sin. Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto you, that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against you by thought, word, and deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring your grace, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. We keep silence for self-reflection and contrition. O most merciful God, who has given your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us, and for his sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of you and of your will, and true obedience to your Word, that by your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. -
The Use of Multiple Stops in Works for Solo Violin by Johann Paul Von
THE USE OF MULTIPLE STOPS IN WORKS FOR SOLO VIOLIN BY JOHANN PAUL VON WESTHOFF (1656-1705) AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO GERMAN POLYPHONIC WRITING FOR A SINGLE INSTRUMENT Beixi Gao, B.M., M.M. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2017 APPROVED: Julia Bushkova, Major Professor Paul Leenhouts, Committee Member Susan Dubois, Committee Member Benjamin Brand, Director of Graduate Studies in the College of Music John W. Richmond, Dean of the College of Music Victor Prybutok, Vice Provost of the Toulouse Graduate School Gao, Beixi. The Use of Multiple Stops in Works for Solo Violin by Johann Paul Von Westhoff (1656-1705) and Its Relationship to German Polyphonic Writing for a Single Instrument. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2017, 32 pp., 19 musical examples, bibliography, 46 titles. Johann Paul von Westhoff's (1656-1705) solo violin works, consisting of Suite pour le violon sans basse continue published in 1683 and Six Suites for Violin Solo in 1696, feature extensive use of multiple stops, which represents a German polyphonic style of the seventeenth- century instrumental music. However, the Six Suites had escaped the public's attention for nearly three hundred years until its rediscovery by the musicologist Peter Várnai in the late twentieth century. This project focuses on polyphonic writing featured in the solo violin works by von Westhoff. In order to fully understand the stylistic traits of this less well-known collection, a brief summary of the composer, Johann Paul Westhoff, and an overview of the historical background of his time is included in this document. -

Christmas Carol Lyrics
1 COMMUNITY CHORUS PROJECT, KIDZU CHILDREN’S MUSEUM & UNIVERSITY PLACE PRESENT A HOLIDAY SING ALONG! Conducted by Caroline Miceli & Accompanied by Scott Schlesinger JINGLE BELLS A pair of hopalong boots and a pistol that shoots Is the wish of Barney and Ben; Refrain: Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way Dolls that will talk and will go for a walk Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh Is the hope of Janice and Jen; Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again. Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas ev'rywhere you go; Dashing through the snow in a one horse open sleigh There's a tree in the Grand Hotel, one in the park as well, Over fields we go, laughing all the way The sturdy kind that doesn't mind the snow. Bells on bob tail ring, making spirits bright. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas; What fun it is to ride & sing a sleigh song tonight! (Refrain) Soon the bells will start, And the thing that will make them ring is the carol that you A day or two ago I thought I'd take a ride sing right within your heart And soon Miss Fanny Bright was seated by my side; The horse was lean and lank. Misfortune seemed his lot, Santa Claus is Coming to Town We ran into a drifted bank and there we got upsot. -
