RAPID Ceirano & C., Welleyes, F.lli Ceirano, STAR Rapid, Matteo C. & C., Itala, Ceirano-Ansaldo, SPA, Junior, SCAT, S.A.Giovanni Ceirano: sono undici aziende, accomunate da due denominatori, sono tutte nate a Torino e sono tutte sorte per iniziativa di uno o dell'altro dei fratelli Ceirano. Addentrarsi nelle vite e nelle frenetiche attività dei quattro fratelli, distinguendo l'apporto di ciascuno, non è facile. I Ceirano sono una famiglia piemontese, originaria di Cuneo, composta da padre, madre e quattro fratelli: Giovanni Battista, nato nel 1860, Giovanni, nato nel 1865, Matteo, il viveur della famiglia, di cinque anni più giovane, ed Ernesto, nato dopo altri cinque anni. A questi si aggiunge in un secondo tempo il figlio di Giovanni che, con una certa mancanza di fantasia, è battezzato Giovanni e chiamato Ernesto. Come si vede, ci sono già i presupposti per una bella confusione, anche a prescindere dai rispettivi caratteri, che sicuramente devono essere stati piuttosto determinati, per non dire litigiosi e testardi, anche perché uno dopo l'altro si consacrano al medesimo mestiere: fondare aziende automobilistiche. Fondare, per poi andarsene, o fonderle con altre, o scioglierle, o rilevarle, in un caleidoscopio di società che vivacizzarono ed arricchirono molto il panorama industriale torinese ed italiano. Il primo a muoversi è naturalmente Giovanni Battista, il più anziano. Fonda la Ceirano & C. nel 1898 e la Welleyes nel 1899; quindi nel 1901, insieme a Matteo, la F.lli Ceirano, in corso Vittorio Emanuele 9. Liquidata questa nel 1903, nel 1904 trasforma la Ceirano & C. in STAR, Società Torinese Automobili Rapid, oggetto di questa breve indagine. -

LABOUR AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE CAR INDUSTRY. Ford strategies in Britain and Brazil Elizabeth Bortolaia Silva Thesis submitted for the Degree of PhD, Imperial College of Science and Technology University of London May 1988 LABOUR AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE CAR INDUSTRY Ford strategies in Britain and Brazil ABSTRACT This thesis looks at aspects of recent changes in international competition in the car industry. It examines the implications of the changes for the relationship between technology and work and it considers how strategies of multinational corporations interact with different national contexts. It is based on a case-study of the Ford Motor Company in its two largest factories in Britain and Brazil, Dagenham and São Bernardo. Chapter 1 describes existing theoretical approaches to comparative studies of technology and work, criticizes technological and cultural determinist approaches and argues for a method that draws on a 'historical regulation' approach. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 describe the long-term background and recent shifts in the pattern of international competition in the motor industry. In particular they look at important shifts in the late 1970s and 1980s and at Ford's changes in management structure and product strategy designed to meet these challenges. Chapter 5 considers recent debates on international productivity comparisons and presents a fieldwork-based comparison of the production process at Dagenham and São Bernardo. The description shows the importance of issues other than technology in determining the flexibility and quality of production. In different national contexts, 2 different mixes of technology and labour can produce comparable results. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 look at the national and local contexts of industrial relations in the two countries to throw light on the different patterns of change observed in the factories. -

110Years Since Mercedes' Dad Bought His First Car In 1897, successful German-born businessman Emil Jellinek bought his first car from genius inventor Gottlieb Daimler. He became an enthusias- tic fan of the automobile, took part in the earliest motor races, and quickly became the largest distributor of Daimler cars. A few months after Herr Daimler's death in 1900, Jellinek persuaded the management of the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft to have its chief designer, legendary and visionary engineer Wilhelm Maybach, build a fast, lightweight Emil Jellinek didn't only love Daimler cars; he also and safe car. San Salvario Il quartiere della nascita dell'auto a Torino A cura di Enrico Miletto, Fondazione Vera Nocentini e Donatella Sasso, Istituto di studi storici Gaetano Salvemini 1 Origini e topografia del quartiere Il quartiere deriva il proprio nome dalla chiesa di San Salvatore in Campagna (da qui la popolare denominazione di San Salvario), edificata da Amedeo di Castellamonte tra il 1646 e il 1653, per volontà della Madama Reale Cristina di Francia. Da un punto di vista topografico, l’area di San Salvario è delimitata dai corsi Massimo d’Azeglio, Vittorio Emanuele II, Bramante e dalla via Nizza. Il borgo vero e proprio inizia a prendere forma soltanto a partire dalla metà dell’Ottocento, quando sorgono i primi insediamenti urbani, attigui alla campagna circostante. Orti, giardini, campi e vivai definiscono la porzione di territorio che dalla strada reale di Nizza (l’attuale via Nizza) arriva fino al Valentino. 2 Porta Nuova e commercio 1848-1852 Viene inaugurato il primo tratto ferroviario che collega Torino a Moncalieri seguito, nel 1853, da quello con Genova. Lo sviluppo dello scalo ferroviario di Porta Nuova, la cui direttrice divide San Salvario dai vicini rioni della Crocetta e di San Secondo, favorisce la crescita nel quartiere di attività commerciali. Sorgono così botteghe e aziende artigianali che contribuiscono a disegnare un’immagine di un quartiere dai ritmi concitati, una piccola city, operosa e indaffarata, le cui strade, ricche di negozi e botteghe, sono percorse, a partire dalla seconda metà dell’Ottocento, da carri trainati da cavalli, tramways e carretti. San Salvario conta all’epoca 50 isolati, circa 200 abitazioni ed è sede di una delle 10 preture cittadine. -

Dan Savoury, the new Vice Principal, joined the Academy earlier this year and also has a wealth of industry and training experience that will help us continue to improve our training which, in turn, benefits your business. I hope to use the experience gained in my previous sales and marketing roles within Ford to help our training continue to grow in scope and quality. It is a really exciting time to be a part of the Ford family; with new vehicles joining the range and new technology transforming the industry more widely. HUEBNER 1910–1996 WRITTEN BY JAMES W. FURLONG SUBMITTED BY THE NAE HOME SECRETARY GEORGE J. HUEBNER, JR., one of the foremost engineers in the field of automotive research, was especially noted for developing the first practical gas turbine for a passenger car. He died of pulmonary edema in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on September 4, 1996. George earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan in 1932. He began work in the mechanical engineering laboratories at Chrysler Corporation in 1931 and completed his studies on a part- time basis. He was promoted to assistant chief engineer of the Plymouth Division in 1936 and returned to the Central Engineering Division in 1939 to work with Carl Breer, one of the three engineers who had designed the first Chrysler vehicle fifteen years earlier. George was especially pleased to work for Breer, whom he regarded as one of the most capable engineers in the country. Breer established a research office in 1939 and named George as his assistant. It became evident to George that he should bring more science into the field. When he became chief engineer in 1946, he enlarged the activities of Chrysler Research into the fields of physics, metallurgy, and chemistry. He was early to use the electron microscope. George also was early to see the need for digital computers in automotive engineering. New poll shows almost three quarters (72%) of motorists against penalties for UK’s cleanest diesels 87% of UK adults unaware of the latest low emission vehicle technology SMMT calls for greater awareness of cleaner diesel tech to help guide policy makers London 11 March, 2015 The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) will today launch a nationwide consumer campaign to raise awareness about the latest low- emission car technology and challenge the increasing demonisation of diesel. A Diesel Facts myth-busting guide will be available at dieselfacts.co.uk and in leaflet form via car makers and dealers. It comes as new consumer research reveals widespread confusion about diesel technology that, if uncorrected, could limit adoption of the latest low emission vehicles and undermine the UK’s efforts to meet strict air quality and climate change obligations. Responding to a YouGov poll, 87% of UK adults said they were unaware of the latest Euro-6 vehicle emission technology, while 54% incorrectly blamed cars and commercial vehicles as the biggest cause of air pollution in the UK. Just under one in five (19%) of people surveyed correctly identified power stations as the biggest contributors of nitrogen oxides (NOx). In fact, it would take 42 million Euro-6 diesel cars (almost four times the number on the roads) to generate the same amount of NOx as one UK coal- fired power station.
