HUEBNER, JR., one of the foremost engineers in the field of automotive research, was especially noted for developing the first practical gas turbine for a passenger car. He died of pulmonary edema in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on September 4, 1996. George earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan in 1932. He began work in the mechanical engineering laboratories at Chrysler Corporation in 1931 and completed his studies on a part- time basis. He was promoted to assistant chief engineer of the Plymouth Division in 1936 and returned to the Central Engineering Division in 1939 to work with Carl Breer, one of the three engineers who had designed the first Chrysler vehicle fifteen years earlier. George was especially pleased to work for Breer, whom he regarded as one of the most capable engineers in the country. Breer established a research office in 1939 and named George as his assistant. It became evident to George that he should bring more science into the field. When he became chief engineer in 1946, he enlarged the activities of Chrysler Research into the fields of physics, metallurgy, and chemistry. He was early to use the electron microscope. George also was early to see the need for digital computers in automotive engineering. HUEBNER 130 based engineering work by the Society of Automotive Engineers in 1959. George's research work covered a wide range of activities, including development of adhesives, use of radioactive isotopes, design and test of a sonic oil well drill, basic research on exhaust catalysts, and the development of standard instruments for accurate measurement of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in exhaust emissions. He held about forty patents and wrote seventeen technical papers. In 1960 he became president of the Chrysler Institute of Engineering, a postgraduate school for engineers. He held this position until his retirement. George's work in engines was impressive. His group designed a large liquid-cooled inverted V-16 fighter aircraft engine in the late 1940s. Under a 1949 U.S. Navy contract, he was responsible for the design and development of a 1,000-horsepower turboprop aircraft engine with a recuperative heat exchanger. He was also responsible for the design of the first automotive V-8 engine with a hemispheric combustion chamber. George saw the gas turbine as the future engine for automobiles. Automobile turbines can be small, light, and durable and have 80 percent fewer moving parts than a piston engine. They can burn almost any liquid fuel and need no oil changes or radiators. However, little of the experience with aircraft jet engines can be applied to ground vehicles. Instead of operating near maximum power, an automobile engine spends most of its life at 10 to 15 percent load, and its duty cycle consists of constant accelerations and decelerations. Aerodynamic components of automobile turbine engines are extremely small, but must be proportionally as accurate as those in large jet engines and operate at much higher rotational speeds. The engine must be produced at low cost and have excellent fuel economy. The first prototype turbine was built in 1953 and installed in a production Plymouth car. It was the first of six generations of experimental turbines. In 1963 Chrysler put fifty gas turbines in hand-built vehicles for public assessment. Thirty thousand letters were received from people who wanted to be part of the test. A marketing program selected 203 representative drivers in forty-eight states and the District of Columbia. The reception among typical potential buyers was enthusiastic. However, the engine needed to be produced at a low cost. George directed the development of low-cost alloys, and his rotary regenerator had solved the fuel economy problem. Because George normally worked ten to twenty years ahead of production, obtaining funding was a constant problem. Once, the turbine was being shown in Europe, but it was not certain if the development would be continued, even though the public wanted these engines. A delegation of Chrysler directors was convinced of its possible impact when they saw President Charles de Gaulle, of France, kneeling to inspect the vehicle. Although the engine had met initial air quality standards, with exceptionally low emissions of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, it still needed work to reduce the oxides of nitrogen, which are typically a sign of combustion efficiency. Development of the engine was given a low priority because of a downturn in the industry, even though the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was willing to underwrite some of the cost of further work. George then directed a program to design and test a battery-powered passenger car for the U.S. Department of Transportation. In 1962 the American Society of Mechanical Engineers cited George “for his leadership in the development of the first automotive gas turbine suitable for mass-produced passenger cars.” Just as the first gas turbine was being built early in 1953, the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps awarded Chrysler a development contract to produce intercontinental ballistic missiles. George was named executive engineer of the missile branch while still serving as executive engineer of research. He organized a complete missile facility, including research, engineering, testing, and production. The Redstone that was produced was the country's first large liquid-fueled missile. All flew without a single reliability failure. The first U.S. satellites launched into orbit and the first manned space flights used these missiles. George relinquished his missile duties after two years to concentrate on the increased scope of his automotive research. George was long involved in the activities of the Society of Automotive Engineers. He served for twenty-five years on the Copyright National Academy of Sciences. All rights reserved. Memorial Tributes: Volume 9 GEORGE J. HUEBNER 132 Coordinating Research Council, the research interface between the automotive and petroleum industries, and was elected president of that group twice. He also served as a member of the Automotive Council, the technical board, the executive committee of the Automotive Council, and the Research Council. He served as chair of the Safety Research Advisory Council for two years and also on the board of directors for two years. He was international president of SAE in 1975. The organization awarded him the Elmer A. Sperry Award for engineering contributions that had advanced the art of transportation. He was elected a fellow of the society in 1977. George was constantly involved in activities of the University of Michigan. He was named a distinguished alumnus, chaired a major fund-raising campaign, and was given the University's Sesquicentennial Award. His wife, Trudy, an early veteran of national advertising, was the only woman elected regent of the University in the state election of 1967. She is involved in activities of the University on an almost daily basis. At his retirement dinner in October 1975, she gave George a lunch pail with the admonition that she married him for better or worse, but not for lunch. Taking the hint, George assumed the chairmanship of the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan, a nonprofit scientific research company, which is the foremost developer of remote sensing systems for spatial and radar systems. This organization developed the prototype for all earth measurement satellites. The institute developed sensors for acquiring data, the attendant computers, and image processing. Science magazine praised the organization for “the foremost sensor research and development in the western world.” He also served on several boards of directors in Michigan and Sweden. He did power plant consulting in the United States, Europe, and Japan. George was honored for his work many times. He was elected to Tau Beta Pi (honorary engineering fraternity), and Sigma Xi (honorary science fraternity). He served on President Nixon's Council on Environmental Quality and the U.S. Army Science Advisory Panel. He was given the Leadership Award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. HUEBNER 133 served as a trustee of the Edison Foundation. George's interests were not confined to his work. He was skilled in woodworking, even designing the shop in his home to be opened to the adjoining garage through a wide door so that he could handle large work pieces. He was skilled in oriental cooking. He spent a great deal of time skin diving and skiing. He played the piano and accordion and was a member of the Explorers Club. He will be remembered by his friends and associates for his skill, dedication, humor, enthusiasm, and an ability to direct the activities of large groups of skilled engineers and scientists.     Chapter Six – Trouble and Triumph in the Thirties Chrysler Corporation has pioneered many of the fundamental and lasting engineering advances in automobile design and construction in the last ten years. Its newest development, the Airflow design of 1934 Chrysler and DeSoto models, has already met with an enthusiastic public response. —Ninth Annual Report of Chrysler Corporation, Year Ended December 31, 1933. February 9, 1934. For the Chrysler Corporation, the years from 1934 through 1940 were more traumatic and troubled than the early Depression years. Three events clouded the exuberance the Company otherwise evidenced with the success of the Plymouth, which was so handily helping it to survive the Great Depression. These were the introduction of the Airflow, the struggles accompanying the birth of the United Auto Workers and the retirement and death of Walter P. Chrysler. The most celebrated of the three was the serious miscalculation called the Airflow. Certainly most accounts of the Company’s fortunes in the mid-1930s center around Chrysler’s introduction of this revolutionary car in 1934 in its Chrysler and DeSoto lines. Walter Chrysler, the engineering trio of Zeder-Skelton-Breer and most of the Company’s top executives believed that the Airflow would make Chrysler the industry leader, surpassing not only Ford, which it had already done, but also General Motors. Instead, the Airflow models were a huge sales disappointment, and the Airflow could well have sent the Company to its grave between 1934 and 1937, just when the rest of the auto industry was enjoying an economic recovery. The second disruption in Chrysler’s operations came in 1937, when its hourly employees organized under the banner of the United Automobile Workers (UAW)-CIO and won a contract with the automaker.

    Contact: Brandt Rosenbusch Chrysler Brand Heritage Chronology 1875-1912: Kansas-born Walter Chrysler, son of a locomotive engineer, was connected to the transportation industries throughout his life. His love of machinery prompted him to forsake a college education for a machinist’s apprenticeship, and his early career comprised numerous mechanical jobs in the railroad industry. 1912-1920: In 1912, Chrysler joined General Motors as manager of its Buick manufacturing plant, becoming president of the Buick division four years later. After parting ways with GM in 1919, Chrysler began a second career as a “doctor of ailing automakers,” strengthening first Willys-Overland, then the Maxwell Motor Corporation. 1920-1924: Chrysler teamed up with three ex-Studebaker engineers, Fred Zeder, Owen Skelton and Carl Breer, to design a revolutionary new car. They defined what the products of the Chrysler brand would be – affordable “luxury” vehicles known for innovative, top-flight engineering. 1924: The first was the 1924 Chrysler Six, an all-new car priced at $1,565 that featured two significant innovations – a light, powerful, high-compression six-cylinder engine and the first use of four-wheel hydraulic brakes in a moderately priced vehicle. The well-equipped Chrysler Six also featured aluminum pistons, replaceable oil and air filters, full- pressure lubrication, tubular front axles, shock absorbers and indirect interior lighting. 1925: After securing a $5,000,000 loan to start production, Chrysler sold over 32,000 units of the Chrysler Six in its first year. The Maxwell company soon had a new name: Chrysler Corporation. In 1925, the firm boasted more than 3, 800 dealers, sold over 100,000 cars and ranked fifth in the industry.

    HISTORY OF AUTOMOBILE AND ITS MANUFACTURING HISTORY OF AUTOMOBILE AND ITS MANUFACTURING Exactly who invented the motor car is to a great extent lost in the mists of history. Many engineers in different countries were working on the same general lines in the middle of the nineteenth century deriving inspiration from the early steam buses and coaches. They all felt the need for a more compact and convenient prime mover to get into a horseless age. EUROPE: Belgium and Germany Etienne Lenoir in Belgium demonstrated a self-propelled vehicle driven by a type of atmospheric engine in 1860. Though the engine was hopelessly inefficient, it did have the merit of quick starting, and unlike steam vehicles, did not need frequent and large dose of water. This engine interested Nicholas Otto, a young German, as he observed its lack of punch and reasoned that more power could be obtained by compressing the charge before feeding it into the cylinder. Otto did this with great success and the idea was an essential step towards the true four-stroke engine. Around 1872, Otto was helped and encouraged to develop the four-stroke system by Gottfried Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, who joined Otto’s company (by then called Gasmotoren-Fabrik Deutz). Otto perfected the true four-stroke cycle and it was this power unit that opened the way to the motor age. Another pioneer in the area, Karl Benz had worked with Daimler at one time in their careers for the same locomotive works in Karlsruhe. Karl Benz is credited with being the first to make a gasoline-engined car for people to buy: a car conceived as entity and not just a carriage with an engine replacing the horse.

No other company in the automobile industry exceeds Chrysler’s record of accomplishment in this period. Few companies in other industries have attained a comparable position. —Six Years’ Progress of Chrysler Motors, November 20, 1929 In late 1929, Walter P. Chrysler could be proud of his achievements of the past six years. Against all odds, he had successfully built a new and vibrant corporation out of the remnants of the ailing Maxwell Motor Company. With the triumphant launch of the first Chrysler car in 1924, followed in 1928 by the introduction of two new nameplates, Plymouth and DeSoto, and the acquisition of Dodge Brothers line in that same year, the new Chrysler Corporation had proven skeptics wrong. It was beginning to challenge both Ford and General Motors. But Walter P. Chrysler would have little time to celebrate those successes. Between the writing of the glowing report in Six Years’ Progress of Chrysler Motors and its publication, the United States began a slide into its darkest days since the Civil War some 60 years before. The stock market crash of October 29, 1929 — “Black Tuesday” it was called — was the opening salvo of the Great Depression. As industries shut down plants and workers lost their jobs, banks across the country failed. In 1930, the first full year of the Depression, more than 1,000 banks closed their doors. During the next two years, nearly 4,000 more followed suit.

When Ralph Van Vechten and the other bankers who controlled Willys-Overland began looking for a miracle worker to save the nearly bankrupt company, Chrysler was a logical choice. But the GM years also made Chrysler rich beyond his expectations, perhaps even his imagining. At 44, he no longer had to work for his living or for the support of his family. He certainly did not need the Willys-Overland job, and given the determined way he left GM, he would have shocked no one by turning down a new position in the car business. In fact, the announcement of Chrysler’s association with Willys-Overland on January 6, 1920, at least according to the Detroit press, caught the auto industry by surprise. Maybe he took the offer, as he claimed, because he was restless in retirement and driving Della crazy at home. If so, he also came to the job with dreams of accomplishing something beyond another turnaround of another faltering operation. Walter Chrysler and John North Willys together, predicted one Detroit newspaper, would “make a bid for what will be practically world supremacy in motor car manufacture.” More tellingly, the two men quickly came to an understanding that Chrysler could develop a new car bearing his own name.
