For a brief period thereafter, renowned Metropolitan Opera artists such as Grace Moore and Lily Pons fared well at the box office, bringing “elite” musical culture to general audiences for a relatively inexpensive price. By the 1940s, however, the studios began grooming their own operatic actresses instead of transplanting celebrities from the stage. Stars such as Deanna Durbin, Kathryn Grayson, and Jane Powell thereby became ambassadors of opera from the highly commercial studio lot. My dissertation traces the shifts in film production and marketing of operatic singers in association with the rise of such cultural phenomena as the music-appreciation movement, all contextualized within the changing social and political landscapes of the United States spanning the Great Depression to the Cold War. Drawing on a variety of methodologies—including, among others, archival research, film analysis, feminist criticisms, and social theory—I argue that Hollywood framed opera as less of a European theatrical art performed in elite venues and more of a democratic, albeit still white, musical tradition that could be sung by talented individuals in any location.

The cultural archive of this dissertation is organized around two important legal watersheds in juvenile justice. In 1899, the first juvenile court was established in Cook County, Illinois, and ushered a wave of juvenile justice reform in courts across the nation. The culmination of early Progressive era child savers’ efforts, the installation of juvenile courts marked a significant shift in the court’s formal role from neutral adjudicator to a paternal administrator. The Supreme Court decision, In re Gault (1967) marks the second watershed. Within normative legal accounts, this decision is seen as “restoring” the court’s impartial treatment of the juvenile based on the determination that juvenile court procedure failed to protect the juvenile’s right to due process. Across these legal watersheds, this dissertation offers a genealogy of juvenile delinquency discourse that interrogates the complex network of disciplinary knowledge (including law, psychology and sociology), which simultaneously clarified and obfuscated the causal features of youth’s supposed predisposition towards criminal behavior.

He never seemed to have chosen the easy way out of any situation, or to allow himself to be abstracted from his task. He refused to imitate the life style of white people, although his complexion was light enough to allow him to pass for a Mexican or a Latino. In his effort to identify with the blacks he regarded himself as all black, and used all his talents and his energy to better the situation for African Americans. In this thesis I have examined to some extent the reasons for this attitude, and given a few examples of how he went about to achieve his aim. His production is so huge that it was necessary to concentrate on a small section of it. I have chosen a selection of articles from his column in the Chicago Defender, a few of his poems, and the history book Black Magic.
