After school had fi nished, Mark and Marina started preparing for a valuable summer vacation. Marina went to the library and got a lot of books. She organized them so she could start reading them over summer vaction. She prepared the necessary equipment so she could start practicing her favorite sport. As for Mark, a whole week of vacation passed and no 1- one saw him leave his room. This made his parents wonder why he was not leaving My Faith is his room except for short periods of time. Marina went to see how he was doing and Strong and why he was spending a lot of time in his room. Steady Marina: Are you ok? Mark: Yes I am fi ne, but a little busy. Marina: A whole week has passed from the vacation and you have been inside your room. What is keeping you so busy? Mark: Come and see for yourself! Marina: What is that, and how did you get it? Mark: It is an old, ruined robot that we used to play with when we were younger. I found it in the storeroom a week ago. Since then I have been trying to fi x it. I’ve tried everything. I bought spare parts for it and tried them, but it did not work. I tried to recharge it but I still can’t make it work. Marina: Robot?! Why are you trying to fi x this robot in particular? It looks like it was ruined a long time ago. Mark: This robot is the only one that has a special feature allowing it to do just about anything. But you must train it to do the stuff you want. It has the ability to learn and be trained, and then do what it has been taught in the best way possible. Marina: It is truly an amazing robot. If that is the case, it will help us fi x a lot of issues. How can we fi x it and make it work again? Mark: I don’t know. I spent a lot of time researching a way to fi x it on the Internet and in some books, but I can’t fi nd a solution. Mark and Marina went to their dad to ask for a solution. Mark explained all the various methods he used in order to try to fi x his robot and make it work again. Their father suggested that they should take it to the person who made the robot since everything Mark tried failed to make the robot work properly. Mark: I have tried every way possible. Is he going to know another way that we don’t know? We tried all the modern techniques. The father: The person who made it is the only one who knows the way to return it to its original state and make it work again. 2 Mark, Marina and their dad started to search for the robot maker. After a long search on the internet, and after using the information written on the robot they were able to fi gure out who made it. They started collecting everything that belonged to the robot, and they all went to the maker. After many hours had passed, a skillful doctor was able to fi x it and make it work again. Mark: This is amazing! The robot has returned to its original state. I did not expect that. Marina: You’re right Mark. The skillful doctor was able to return the robot to its original state after it was ruined and had stopped working. The father: For sure he did an amazing job. But why are you so surprised? No one can return to his origin unless through his creator. This happened to all of us. Mark and Marina: How? Marina: Can you explain it in a clearer way dad? Dad: Let’s start the story from the beginning... The father: You are right Marina, Although God could have In the beginning, God created Marina: You are right dad. • Liturgy, Space, and Community in the Basilica Julii (Santa Maria in Trastevere)
DALE KINNEY Liturgy, Space, and Community in the Basilica Julii (Santa Maria in Trastevere) Abstract The Basilica Julii (also known as titulus Callisti and later as Santa Maria in Trastevere) provides a case study of the physical and social conditions in which early Christian liturgies ‘rewired’ their participants. This paper demon- strates that liturgical transformation was a two-way process, in which liturgy was the object as well as the agent of change. Three essential factors – the liturgy of the Eucharist, the space of the early Christian basilica, and the local Christian community – are described as they existed in Rome from the fourth through the ninth centuries. The essay then takes up the specific case of the Basilica Julii, showing how these three factors interacted in the con- crete conditions of a particular titular church. The basilica’s early Christian liturgical layout endured until the ninth century, when it was reconfigured by Pope Gregory IV (827-844) to bring the liturgical sub-spaces up-to- date. In Pope Gregory’s remodeling the original non-hierarchical layout was replaced by one in which celebrants were elevated above the congregation, women were segregated from men, and higher-ranking lay people were accorded places of honor distinct from those of lesser stature. These alterations brought the Basilica Julii in line with the requirements of the ninth-century papal stational liturgy. The stational liturgy was hierarchically orga- nized from the beginning, but distinctions became sharper in the course of the early Middle Ages in accordance with the expansion of papal authority and changes in lay society.

In the context of a series of national and communal challenges in the 1930s and 1940s, I argue that Copts during this period began to shift their attention away from the national to the communal. This shift was accompanied by a transfer of competitive political energy to communal affairs, resulting in a period characterized by heightened tensions and contestation within the community, largely based around community-specific bodies of authority. These bodies became the center of several communal struggles for power, in particular those regarding the election and character of the patriarch, the administration of Coptic awqaf, and the composition and duties of al- Majlis al-Milli. These three issues form the primary arenas for communal contestation at the core of this study.

Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ King of Kings and Lord of lords Icon designed by Dr. Yousef Nassief and Dr. Bedour Latif H.H. Pope Shenouda III, 117th Pope of Alexandria and the See of St. Mark INTRODUCTION TO THE COPTIC ORTHODOX CHURCH 1993 FR. TADROS Y. MALATY ST. GEORGE'S COPTIC ORTHODOX CHURCH SPORTING - ALEXANDRIA EGYPT 4 BLESSED IS EGYPT MY PEOPLE Isa. 19:25 God's promise to His people is always fulfilled; He foretold that He would ride on a light and upon a swift cloud and come to Egypt (Isa 19:1); and in that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the Lord at its border (Isa 19:19). This promise was fulfilled by the flight of the Holy Family from the face of the tyrant Herod to find refuge among the Gentiles. Thus Jesus Christ came during His childhood to Egypt to lay by Himself the foundation stone of His Church in Egypt which has be- come one of the four primary "Sees" in the world, among the churches of Jerusalem, Antioch and Rome, joined later by the "See" of Constantinople. The star of the Egyptian Church shone through the School of Alexandria which taught Christendom the allegoric and spiritual methods in interpreting the Scripture, and was the leader in defending the Orthodox faith on an ecumenical level. The Christian monastic movement in all its forms started in Egypt, attracting the heart of the Church towards the desert, to practice the angelic inner life.

  • Choosing the Patriarch Lessons from the History of Our Glorious Church
¡ Choosing the Patriarch Lessons from the History of our Glorious Church INTRODUCTION !ese days, in every Divine Liturgy, we ask God to “remember the soul of the !rice- Blessed Pope Abba Shenouda III. Graciously, O Lord, repose his soul in the bosom of our Holy Fathers and grant us a righteous shepherd who will shepherd Your people in purity and righteousness.” While praying, we must also take heed of the Canons, the Holy Tradition, and the history of the Church in choosing the person who will sit on the See of St. Mark. I wish to present some lessons from the history of our glorious Church in choosing the Patriarch, and speci"cally, choosing the Patriarch from among the diocesan metropolitans and bishops. I present this research with the prayer and wish that God may lead us to remain faithful to the Holy Canons and Tradition established in the Church. When we consider the history of choosing the Patriarch in our Church, we "nd diversity in the ways in which he was chosen. In some instances, a Patriarch chose his successor while in others there was a consensus between the bishops and laity concerning a speci"c person. In yet other instances, the Patriarch was chosen by an election that was followed by an altar lot. !e Patriarch was also chosen from men of di#erent vocations. !e Church chose men who were professors of the Catechetical School of Alexandria, monks, and even laymen. Despite this diversity, the obvious truth is that the Church never chose a patriarch from the diocesan metropolitans and bishops except during a very short and recent time period that did not exceed 30 years between 1928-1956.
