St. Polycarp Feast: February 23 Facts Feast Day: February 23 Imagine being able to sit at the feet of the apostles and hear their stories of life with Jesus from their own lips. Imagine walking with those who had walked with Jesus, seen him, and touched him. That was what Polycarp was able to do as a disciple of Saint John the Evangelist. But being part of the second generation of Church leaders had challenges that the first generation could not teach about. What did you do when those eyewitnesses were gone? How do you carry on the correct teachings of Jesus? How do you answer new questions that never came up before? With the apostles gone, heresies sprang up pretending to be true teaching, persecution was strong, and controversies arose over how to celebrate liturgy that Jesus never laid down rules for. Polycarp, as a holy man and bishop of Smyrna, found there was only one answer -- to be true to the life of Jesus and imitate that life. Saint Ignatius of Antioch told Polycarp "your mind is grounded in God as on an immovable rock." When faced with heresy, he showed the "candid face" that Ignatius admired and that imitated Jesus' response to the Pharisees. Marcion, the leader of the Marcionites who followed a dualistic heresy, confronted Polycarp and demanded respect by saying, "Recognize us, Polycarp." Polycarp responded, "I recognize you, yes, I recognize the son of Satan." On the other hand when faced with Christian disagreements he was all forgiveness and respect. One of the controversies of the time came over the celebration of Easter. -

D’AVRAY Fellow of the British Academy Abstract: Papal law is known from the late 4th century (Siricius). There was demand for decretals and they were collected in private collections from the 5th century on. Charlemagne’s Admonitio generalis made papal legislation even better known and the Pseudo-Isidorian collections brought genuine decretals also to the wide audience that these partly forged collections reached. The papal reforms from the 11th century on gave rise to a new burst of papal decretals, and collections of them, culminating in the Liber Extra of 1234. The Council of Trent opened a new phase. The ‘Congregation of the Council’, set up to apply Trent’s non-dogmatic decrees, became a new source of papal law. Finally, in 1917, nearly a millennium and a half of papal law was codified by Cardinal Gasparri within two covers. Papal law was to a great extent ‘demand- driven’, which requires explanation. The theory proposed here is that Catholic Christianity was composed of a multitude of subsystems, not planned centrally and each with an evolving life of its own. Subsystems frequently interfered with the life of other subsystems, creating new entanglements. This constantly renewed complexity had the function (though not the purpose) of creating and recreating demand for papal law to sort out the entanglements between subsystems. For various reasons other religious systems have not generated the same demand: because the state plays a ‘papal’ role, or because the units are small, discrete and simple, or thanks to a clear simple blueprint, or because of conservatism combined with a tolerance of some inconsistency. -

The Patrocinium of St. Joseph Calasanz November 27 Although the Feast of St. Joseph Calasanz is celebrated on August 25, this date often falls at the end of summer vacation for most Piarist Schools. As a result, the religious order has designated November 27, which is the day he opened Europe’s first free public school, as the Patrocinium, a special day to honor and celebrate St. Joseph Calasanz. Joseph was born on September 11, 1557 in a tiny village called Peralta de la Sal. He was a Spanish priest from Aragon, Spain, who went to Rome at the end of the sixteenth century and started schools for poor and homeless children. He also started a religious congregation to serve these schools which is today spread throughout the world. He was well educated in philosophy, law and theology at the Spanish universities of Estadilla, Lerida, and Valencia. His family initially did not support his religious calling. His father wanted him to marry and to continue the family, but after recovering from an illness which brought him close to death, Calasanz was ordained as a priest on December 17, 1583. He subsequently became vicar general of Tremp. He later relinquished much of his inheritance and resigned his vicariate. For the next ten years, he held various posts as a secretary, administrator and theologian in the Diocese of Albarracín in Spain. In 1592, Joseph went to Rome, where he became a theologian in the service of Cardinal Marcoantonio Colonna and a tutor to his nephew. He worked alongside St. Camillus de Lellis during the plague, which hit Rome at the time. -

DALE KINNEY Liturgy, Space, and Community in the Basilica Julii (Santa Maria in Trastevere) Abstract The Basilica Julii (also known as titulus Callisti and later as Santa Maria in Trastevere) provides a case study of the physical and social conditions in which early Christian liturgies ‘rewired’ their participants. This paper demon- strates that liturgical transformation was a two-way process, in which liturgy was the object as well as the agent of change. Three essential factors – the liturgy of the Eucharist, the space of the early Christian basilica, and the local Christian community – are described as they existed in Rome from the fourth through the ninth centuries. The essay then takes up the specific case of the Basilica Julii, showing how these three factors interacted in the con- crete conditions of a particular titular church. The basilica’s early Christian liturgical layout endured until the ninth century, when it was reconfigured by Pope Gregory IV (827-844) to bring the liturgical sub-spaces up-to- date. In Pope Gregory’s remodeling the original non-hierarchical layout was replaced by one in which celebrants were elevated above the congregation, women were segregated from men, and higher-ranking lay people were accorded places of honor distinct from those of lesser stature. These alterations brought the Basilica Julii in line with the requirements of the ninth-century papal stational liturgy. The stational liturgy was hierarchically orga- nized from the beginning, but distinctions became sharper in the course of the early Middle Ages in accordance with the expansion of papal authority and changes in lay society. -

Mary the Blessed Virgin
January 1 – Mary the Blessed Virgin Mary is venerated with a special cult, called by St. Thomas Aquinas, hyperdulia, as the holiest of all creatures. The main events of her life are celebrated as liturgical feasts of the universal Church. Traditionally, she was declared the daughter of Sts. Joachim and Anne. Born in Jerusalem, Mary was presented in the Temple and took a vow of virginity. Living in Nazareth, Mary was visited by the archangel Gabriel, who announced to her that she would become the Mother of Jesus, by the Holy Spirit. She became betrothed to St. Joseph and went to visit her cousin, Elizabeth, who was bearing St. John the Baptist. Acknowledged by Elizabeth as the Mother of God, Mary intoned the Magnificat. When Emperor Augustus declared a census throughout the vast Roman Empire, Mary and St. Joseph went to Bethlehem where he was born, as he belonged to the House of David. There Mary gave birth to Jesus and was visited by the Three Kings. Mary and Joseph presented Jesus in the Temple, where St. Simeon rejoiced and Mary received word of sorrows to come later. Warned to flee, St. Joseph and Mary went to Egypt to escape the wrath of King Herod. They remained in Egypt until King Herod died and then returned to Nazareth. Nothing is known of Mary's life during the next years except for a visit to the Temple of Jerusalem, at which time Mary and Joseph sought the young Jesus, who was in the Temple with the learned elders. The first recorded miracle of Jesus was performed at a wedding in Cana, and Mary was instrumental in calling Christ's attention to the need. -

My Life for the Pope
Maybe you have never heard of Consalvi, but he was an important character: My Life for the Pope You students may find it difficult in your modern world to understand how a person could devote his whole life in the service of the Church and the Pope. Well, let me tell you my story and you’ll see at least how things used to be. My ancestors came from Pisa, of an ancient noble family, but my grandfather settled in the Papal States. There he met Ercole Consalvi (not me), who gave him a large fortune provided he changed his family name to Consalvi. My grandfather agreed (his name was Gregorio) and moved to Rome. I was born in Rome on June 8, 1757 and was destined for Church service as soon as I was born. After all, my family was influential and guaranteed me a swift rise. At age nine I began my education in Catholic colleges. My education lasted until 1783, and I studied rhetoric, theology, law, and philosophy. In 1783, I began a brilliant career in the service of Pope Pius VI, but then the French Revolution broke out. The French crossed into Italy and looked for a pretext to invade the Papal States. I was put at the head of a military commission to make certain that no disturbances would occur and no pretext would be given. On December 28, 1797, though, a French general was killed in Rome and in February a French army under General Berthier took over the city. The French removed Pius VI, Spencer Discala, PH.D. -
