Plague and Persecution: The Black Death and Early Modern Witch-Hunts History 480: Major Seminar II Helen Christian Professor Laura Beers April 27, 2011 2 Abstract The century or so from approximately 1550 to 1650 is a period during which witch-hunts reached unprecedented frequency and intensity. The circumstances that fomented the witch- hunts—persistent warfare, religious conflict, and harvest failures—had occurred before, but witch-hunts had never been so ubiquitous or severe. This paper argues that the intensity of the Early Modern witch-hunts can be traced back to the plague of 1348, and argues that the plague was a factor in three ways. First, the plague’s devastation and the particularly unpleasant nature of the disease traumatized the European psyche, meaning that any potential recurrence of plague was a motivation to search for scapegoats. Second, the population depletion set off a chain of events that destabilized Europe. Pope Urban’s vision of a unified Church quickly turned into an effort to Latinize the East through the Crusades. Although Pope Innocent III had instructed crusaders to not go to Constantinople (4th, 1204), they took mules into the sanctuary of Hagia Sophia to carry away plunder. And Innocent then said that the crusade was a “just judgement of God”. He began the rebaptizing and reordination of Eastern clergy who converted, and inconsiderately installed a Venetian nobleman as the Latin Patriarch of Constantinople. Later, the West began blaming the East for the crusades’ failures. The following years were devastation in both East and West. The East was under constant Turkish attack as the Byzantine Empire diminished. In the West nationalism gave rise to independent countries and kings, who sought to control Rome. Two events brought great devastation to all of Europe – the Hundred Years’ War between England and France, and the Bubonic Plague. The historian S.E. Ozmont said, “As never before, not even during the century of the Roman Empire’s collapse, Western people walked through the valley of the shadow of death”. -

The Libellus ofTelesphorus andthe Decretals ofGregory IX by Kenneth Pennington Syracuse University's manuscript collection of medieval and early modern manuscripts is, like the Bibliotheque Nationale's, for the most part uncataloged. But the collection is very exciting, and it will yield much information when it is finally made available to the scholarly community. Unlike many European manuscript collections in American libraries, most of Syracuse's manuscripts were not obtained in a haphazard fashion. Libraries usually receive manuscripts from friends and patrons (libraries can hardly afford to buy them out of their regular budgets); consequently, the scope and contents of the collection normally reflect a lack of unity or purpose. Most of Syracuse's medieval and early modern manuscripts were collected by the great Leopold von Ranke for a specific project; Ranke planned to write a monumental history of the Republic of Venice, and he scoured Italy for books and manuscripts to provide the raw material for his work. -

Garnett The tradition of the Red Mass was begun by Pope Innocent IV in 1243 for the Ecclesial Judical Court asking the invocation of the Holy Spirit as a source of wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude and strength for the coming term of the court. The color red signifies the Holy Spirit and martyrdom. St. Thomas More is the patron saint of lawyers. The Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana will celebrate the fifth annual Red Mass on Monday, October 5, 2020, at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Lafayette at 5:30 pm. All government officials (federal, state, local levels, executive, legislative, judicial branches), attorneys, paralegals, law students and their spouses are cordially invited to attend. One does not have to be Catholic to join us in prayer and fellowship for the legal community. The Red Mass is a tradition in the Catholic Church which dates back to the 13th century. The first Red Mass is believed to have been celebrated in the Cathedral of Paris in 1245, and thereafter the tradition spread throughout Europe. A Red Mass was initially celebrated to mark the beginning of the annual term of the courts but can be held at other times. The word “red” was originally used to describe the Mass in 1310, because the justices of the English Supreme Court wore scarlet robes. Over time the “Red” Mass came to have a deeper theological meaning, with red symbolizing the “tongues of fire” that descended upon the Apostles at Pentecost bestowing the gifts of the Spirit. -

Whereas the saintly female mystic was revered as an emblem of piety, her mirror-image, the witch, was believed to be the em- bodiment of evil, who deliberately inverted orthodox religion by engaging in diabolic rites.
