5 Part of a presentation on Orchid Growing Substrates which encompasses Orchiata Bark. The presentation was given by Xavier Garreau de Loubresse at the Australian Orchid Conference Perth 2012

Orchiata is the bark that LADOS sell.

Xavier’s former favourite mix was a mixture of 700L bark, 300L pumice and a very low level of coconut coir, about 1kg/cubic meter, lime 3kg and PG Mix 3 kg. It would provide good water retention and root growth, but still require frequent repotting due to the coir breaking down. Since moving to Vietnam, one successful complicated mix was Orchiata bark 9-12 mm 50 parts, 1cm pumice 10 parts, 1cm polystyrene beads 5 parts, shredded cut in 2cm pieces tree fern 2 parts, and karst limestone sand 0.5 parts. Later the karst would be replaced by coir at the same rate, which was blended with dolomitic limestone, to reach 3 kg/cubic meter of final potting mix. Nutricote 14-14- 14 180 days was added on top of all the species, at the rate of 2g/12 cm pot, and it required regular repotting, every year. Though some plants potted in this mix are still in the same mix after 6 years. For the bigger to big pot size, some Orchiata 12-15 mm would be added, and some bigger polystyrene added, though the bigger side pots do not have a bottom, but more a mesh as is usual in tropical Asia At the same time, trials showed that the growth was equally good in Orchiata 9-12 mm, sometimes with a bit of pumice (about 20%) added due to the fact that Hanoi can become extremely wet in summer, and extra drainage capacity must be provided. Switching to the bigger size of Orchiata avoided the use of pumice for the bigger pots and now all the plants, except some mentioned afterwards, are grown in straight Orchiata, the thin rooted species getting a blend of 6-9mm and 9-12 mm at a ratio of about 1:2, the bigger rooted ones getting straight 9-12mm. Some extra lime is added on top of the pot, English style, every few months, but it is possible to apply the lime diluted in water as a drench. Due to the acid fertilizers used and the heat and humidity, it keeps the Orchiata at the perfect level, and as explained before, the lime seems to be required for purposes other than the simple pH control. The plants are growing successfully, with a strong root system in that single component mix. Some other growers have begun to change to the use of straight Orchiata in tropical countries, China and Thailand, for their Paphiopedilum. The plants need to be repotted usually when they have outgrown their pot, which makes the management easy.

POTTING SUPPLIES ORCHIATA Bark is available FROM Ken Martin, Phone 3341 5474. 9 Dianna Street UNDERWOOD. Ken has taken delivery of a new lot of bark from Garden City Plastics, it seems to be a very good and hard bark. It is available in 4 sizes, Small 6-9mm, Medium 9-12mm, Large 12-18mm and Extra Large 18-25mm. The price to LADOS members is $25.00 per 40L bag,. The bag size is 20% smaller than before but we think it is a superior quality Coconut Chips are available in 2 sizes, small and large from Ken @ $11.00 per block. Ken has also taken delivery of Perlite which is now available from him.

The Cancer Raffle run in conjunction with the Annual Show went well and resulted in a donation of $1000 to the Cancer Council. Well done and thanks to all who supported the raffle both by buying and selling tickets. Results are as follows:-

7 Cold Damage

By Susan Jones

Part 3

In addition to the insulating wraps and plastic covering, extra mulch at the base of bedding plants (reed-stem Epidendrums, Arandas, Mokaras, etc.) will help protect them from freezing temperatures. When the weather warms up, the extra mulch should be removed. Treatment of Plants After Cold Stress The environment to which plants are subjected after cold stress affects the degree of injury and rate of symptom development. Importance of post-exposure environment varies with the severity of cold stress. Damage to plants exposed to extreme temperatures may be influenced by post- stress handling. Intense light, low humidity and high temperatures following chilling of some tropical plants result in increased water loss through transpiration. Extreme water stress can develop if the chill exposure has disrupted water absorption, temporarily or permanently. Cold injury to roots may not be evident until spring, when plants are stressed by higher temperatures. Failure to initiate a spring growth flush may be the only visual symptom of winter injury, and little can be done to minimize its effects by this time. Weakened or injured plants are more susceptible to disease attack, so growers should keep an eye out for symptoms and possibly use a preventive fungicide. Increased shade may also reduce heat or water stress during the recovery period. After the Fact If the worst happens and your orchids are damaged by the cold, do not assume that they are dead. Allow the medium to dry, and keep the plants in a humid environment out of direct sun and high temperatures. Do not water until new growth sprouts. Watering may be resumed at this time, first with plain water, followed by a light dose of a fertilizer with a full compliment of minor elements as new roots develop. The positive side of the occasional winter chill is that, in many cases, cool periods help induce or enhance bud initiation and flowering. References Ingram, Dewayne L., Thomas Yeager and Rita L.
