  • LISA EVANS FORWARD Lisa Evans Is a Hugely Talented and Versatile Member of Our Squad
ARSENAL HOME LEARNING LISA EVANS FORWARD Lisa Evans is a hugely talented and versatile member of our squad. She made 25 appearances in 2018/19 season, scoring twice and making six assists. She started her career at Glasgow City, alongside Emma Mitchell. Lisa had a very successful spell with the club, winning nine trophies in just four seasons before moving on in 2012. Leaving her home country of Scotland, Lisa moved to Germany and spent three successful seasons at Turbine Potsdam. Her next club was Bayern Munich. She joined the Munich side in 2015, winning the Frauen Bundesliga title in 2015/16 season. Like Vivianne Miedema, Viktoria Schnaderbeck and Jill Roord, Lisa then made the switch from Bayern to north London. Lisa signed for Arsenal in the summer of 2017 and hasn’t looked back. Having joined the club as a forward, Lisa was asked to play much of her first season at right back. She is confident and competent in lots of positions which makes her even more valuable to the squad. Her tactical knowledge and positioning help make her one of the squad’s best performers. She constantly keeps her width on the pitch which helps create space in the middle for attacking players. It also gives her time to choose whether to cross the ball or use her pace and dribble at defenders. Born in Perth, Lisa has represented Scotland since her debut against Wales in 2011. At the 2014 Cyprus Women’s Cup Lisa won the golden boot for scoring the most goals in the tournament.

Scotland Women’s National Team: A Team on theRise by Ciara McCormack For anyone that has been following European women’s soccer in the last decade, Scotland is a team that has been knocking on the door, inching painfully closer to inclusion in its first major international tournament. On Oct. 24, 2012, Scotland played Spain for the final spot in the UEFA EURO 2013, which will be held in Sweden next year. photo courtesy of Glasgow City FC For Scottish players, it would have been a way to eliminate memories of losing on away goals in a playoff to Russia for a EURO 2009 spot. Yet with Scotland moments away from going through on away goals, and the score tied 2-2 in Spain, after a 1-1 draw in Scotland, Spain scored a goal with seconds left in extra time. They left the Scots shattered on the field, so close to such a major accomplishment after overcoming so many challenges. But Scotland’s players had little time to dwell. “We played Spain on Wednesday night in Madrid and suffered the most heartbreaking loss of not only my career but all of ours,” said Scotland Captain and starting goalkeeper Gemma Rachel Corsie and Fay. “Thirty-six hours later, we were back at work and school. Leanne Ross lift the Cup “In that last game we played against Spain in the EURO 2013 playoff, nine of the starting 11 were either full-time students or in full-time employment. At least two of the players were taking unpaid leave to be there as they had used up all their annual leave for the year, and the rest were using their last few days of their annual leave,” Fay said.

  • Sustaining Excellence in Challenging Times President Beck A
Fall/Winter 2015 Sustaining Excellence in Challenging Times President Beck A. Taylor reflects on his first five years leading Whitworth Meet the Class of 2019 Author Jess Walter Britworthians at Oxford Message from President Beck A. Taylor only two decades earlier. And in a 1976 survey, when people were asked to rank fame among a list of their life goals, it came in next to last, ranking 15th out of 16 outcomes. Thirty years later, 51 percent of young people ranked fame as one of their top personal goals. So what is the antidote to the “Big Me” culture? As Whitworth considers this question, we need to look no farther than the person of Christ. Jesus embodied humility and selflessness, sacrifice and service. So as Whitworth equips its graduates to “follow Christ…,” we must be attentive to reinforcing moral virtues, quick to point out scriptural imperatives to love neighbor as self, and resolute in leading students through an educational journey that opens their minds and hearts to the needs of others. Despite the ever-present self-aggrandizement in our world, I see a markedly different and refreshingly sincere posture among Whitworth’s students. Perhaps it’s because we attract a different kind of student to Whitworth, or perhaps it’s because our programs and culture promote a sense of otherness that flows through our students. Regardless, I speak with students each and every day who are curious about how to serve the world in ways that honor their gifts and passions and meet the needs of others. These students are concerned about the world, and not just about their own place in it.
