What you can do as a parent or carer • Play board games! Games can involve a lot of maths: this could be counting squares, looking for sequences, moving in different directions, exploring probability by rolling dice or being dealt a card, and following logic and rules. • Play puzzles and puzzle-like games. Examples include Noughts and Crosses, Guess Who?, Sudoku, Dominoes, Battleships, Dots-and-Boxes and Chess. These involve strategic thinking, problem solving, and planning, as well as lots of the skills mentioned above. • Include children in activities that use maths. For instance cooking often asks for lots of quantities and measuring as well as shapes, times and temperatures. Shopping involves prices, counting money, and checking the time. • Estimate all sorts of things together: “I wonder how many steps there are here?” • Plan journeys together, look at maps, timetables, and talk about distances. • Talk about maths in a positive way, that way your child will too! 345373_SCT0519212352-002_Summer Maths Challenge_noballs.indd 1 25/06/2019 16:13 25/06/2019 16:13 25/06/2019 1 Challenge_noballs.indd Maths 345373_SCT0519212352-002_Summer Talk about maths in a positive way, that way your child will too! will child your way that way, positive a in maths about Talk • Plan journeys together, look at maps, timetables, and talk about distances. about talk and timetables, maps, at look together, journeys Plan • are here?” are there steps many how wonder “I together: things of sorts all Estimate • the time. the temperatures. • LISA EVANS FORWARD Lisa Evans Is a Hugely Talented and Versatile Member of Our Squad
ARSENAL HOME LEARNING LISA EVANS FORWARD Lisa Evans is a hugely talented and versatile member of our squad. She made 25 appearances in 2018/19 season, scoring twice and making six assists. She started her career at Glasgow City, alongside Emma Mitchell. Lisa had a very successful spell with the club, winning nine trophies in just four seasons before moving on in 2012. Leaving her home country of Scotland, Lisa moved to Germany and spent three successful seasons at Turbine Potsdam. Her next club was Bayern Munich. She joined the Munich side in 2015, winning the Frauen Bundesliga title in 2015/16 season. Like Vivianne Miedema, Viktoria Schnaderbeck and Jill Roord, Lisa then made the switch from Bayern to north London. Lisa signed for Arsenal in the summer of 2017 and hasn’t looked back. Having joined the club as a forward, Lisa was asked to play much of her first season at right back. She is confident and competent in lots of positions which makes her even more valuable to the squad. Her tactical knowledge and positioning help make her one of the squad’s best performers. She constantly keeps her width on the pitch which helps create space in the middle for attacking players. It also gives her time to choose whether to cross the ball or use her pace and dribble at defenders. Born in Perth, Lisa has represented Scotland since her debut against Wales in 2011. At the 2014 Cyprus Women’s Cup Lisa won the golden boot for scoring the most goals in the tournament.

Scotland Women’s National Team: A Team on theRise by Ciara McCormack For anyone that has been following European women’s soccer in the last decade, Scotland is a team that has been knocking on the door, inching painfully closer to inclusion in its first major international tournament. On Oct. 24, 2012, Scotland played Spain for the final spot in the UEFA EURO 2013, which will be held in Sweden next year. photo courtesy of Glasgow City FC For Scottish players, it would have been a way to eliminate memories of losing on away goals in a playoff to Russia for a EURO 2009 spot. Yet with Scotland moments away from going through on away goals, and the score tied 2-2 in Spain, after a 1-1 draw in Scotland, Spain scored a goal with seconds left in extra time. They left the Scots shattered on the field, so close to such a major accomplishment after overcoming so many challenges. But Scotland’s players had little time to dwell. “We played Spain on Wednesday night in Madrid and suffered the most heartbreaking loss of not only my career but all of ours,” said Scotland Captain and starting goalkeeper Gemma Rachel Corsie and Fay. “Thirty-six hours later, we were back at work and school. Leanne Ross lift the Cup “In that last game we played against Spain in the EURO 2013 playoff, nine of the starting 11 were either full-time students or in full-time employment. At least two of the players were taking unpaid leave to be there as they had used up all their annual leave for the year, and the rest were using their last few days of their annual leave,” Fay said.
