Kompetenzentwicklung Im Sport Anhand Des Beispiels Skateboarding Kompetenzentwicklung im Sport anhand des Beispiels Skateboarding Diplomarbeit Zur Erlangung des akademischen Grades eines Magisters der Naturwissenschaften an der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz vorgelegt von: Sebastian Schoberer bei Mag. Dr.phil. Abstract The main objective of this thesis is to investigate how the inclusion of skateboarding in PE classes in secondary schools in Austria is beneficial for the student’s development of competences. The first part of the thesis offers a detailed insight into the world of skateboarding, as the sports history, the skateboard itself, different disciplines and socio-cultural aspects of skating are discussed. The second part of the thesis contains information on aspects of the Austrian school system and how the sport fits into it, as well as an explanation of competence-oriented teaching. The final part of the diploma project offers detailed lesson plans which allow a successful conduction of a skateboarding course in schools. iii Vorwort Vorwort Seit mittlerweile mehr als 13 Jahren gibt es stets eine Konstante in meinem Leben – das Skateboard. Our target demographic are intermediate skaters, who have at least 1-5 years of skating experience. During our user research, we found out that learning how to skate can be significantly challenging for beginners. There are two aspects of learning that we uncovered that is relevant for skating: (a) learning by doing and (b) play. “Learning by doing” refers to the practice of trial-and-error, repetition and “feel” (e.g., experiencing the equipment) and watching others. “Play” refers to the feelings of “adrenaline rush”, control, “intrinsic interest” [1] and the creative process of performing tricks and exploiting affordances in their immediate environments. After weighing three design alternatives, our group decided to proceed with the concept “MusiSkate”, a skateboard that provides real-time musical feedback to pre-defined skating movements. This solution has the advantage of enhancing the user experience of skating through rich audio feedback, something that is demonstrated in other research [2].

They were all white women, punkers in leath- er jackets and ripped jeans who exuded the ultimate in cool. I thought of my brother as a rock star in his ability to attract so many edgy, beautiful women in a racial category that I knew at the age of nine was out of our family’s league. As unique as I thought my brother’s power of attraction to be, I learned later that numerous Asian stars rocked the stage in my brother’s world of skateboarding. A community of intoxicatingly rebellious Asian and Pacific Islander men thrived during the 1970s and 1980s within a skater world almost always characterized as white, if not blatantly racist. These men’s positioning becomes particularly notable during an era documented as a time of crippling emas- culation for Asian American men.

  • Skate Parks: a Guide for Landscape Architects and Planners
SKATE PARKS: A GUIDE FOR LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS AND PLANNERS by DESMOND POIRIER B.F.A., Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island, 1999. A THESIS submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Department of Landscape Architecture College of Regional and Community Planning KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2008 Approved by: Major Professor Stephanie A. Rolley, FASLA, AICP Copyright DESMOND POIRIER 2008 Abstract Much like designing golf courses, designing and building skateboard parks requires very specific knowledge. This knowledge is difficult to obtain without firsthand experience of the sport in question. An understanding of how design details such as alignment, layout, surface, proportion, and radii of the curved surfaces impact the skateboarder’s experience is essential and, without it, a poor park will result. Skateboarding is the fastest growing sport in the US, and new skate parks are being fin- ished at a rate of about three per day. Cities and even small towns all across North America are committing themselves to embracing this sport and giving both younger and older participants a positive environment in which to enjoy it. In the interest of both the skateboarders who use them and the people that pay to have them built, it is imperative that these skate parks are built cor- rectly. Landscape architects will increasingly be called upon to help build these public parks in conjunction with skate park design/builders. At present, the relationship between landscape architects and skate park design/builders is often strained due to the gaps in knowledge between the two professions.

BAMcinématek presents Skateboarding is Not a Crime, a 24-film tribute to the best of skateboarding in cinema, Sep 6—23 Opens with George Gage’s 1978 Skateboard with the director in person The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor for BAMcinématek and BAM Rose Cinemas. Brooklyn, NY/Aug 16, 2013—From Friday, September 6 through Thursday, September 12, BAMcinématek presents Skateboarding is Not a Crime, a 24-film tribute to the best of skateboarding in cinema, from the 1960s to the present. The ultimate in counterculture coolness, skateboarding has made an irresistibly sexy subject for movies thanks to its rebel-athlete superstars, SoCal slacker fashion, and jaw-dropping jumps, ollies, tricks, and stunts. Opening the series on Friday, September 6 is George Gage’s Skateboard (1978), following a lumpish loser who comes up with an ill-advised scheme to manage an all-teen skateboarding team in order to settle his debts with his bookie. An awesomely retro ride through 70s skateboarding culture, Skateboard was written and produced by Miami Vice producer Dick Wolf and stars teen idol Leif Garrett (Alfred Hitchcock’s daughter plays his mom!) and Z-Boys great Tony Alva. Gage will appear in person for a Q&A following the screening. Two of the earliest films in the series showcase the upright technique that dominated in the 60s. Skaterdater (1965—Sep 23), Noel Black’s freewheelingly shot, dialogue-free puppy-love story (made with pre-adolescent members of Torrance, California’s Imperial Skateboard Club) is widely considered to be the first skateboard movie. Claude Jutra’s cinéma vérité lark The Devil’s Toy (1966—Sep 23), is narrated in faux-alarmist fashion, with kids whipping down the hills of Montreal, only to have their decks confiscated by the cops.

Funnily enough, it was actually at the bus station. I remember when I was going on a camping trip with the Beavers, or something like that, when I was well young and I just remember getting in trouble ‘cause I was like running around on the ledges and stuff and they were like: “Man, you need to get out of the way.” And, yeah, I was just getting in everyone’s way and it was just like...yeah, I was a bit of a nuisance really, that sort of...yeah, I guess that was probably the first time I ever even seen it. I remember then going past on the buses and seeing it all there and stuff and, yeah, it was really cool. A few of my friends, like at school and that when I was younger, but yeah, I hadn’t delved into the world of skateboarding yet. But yeah, it was pretty cool, but then...I suppose...well, I start...my first skateboard I ever got was an American one – my mum bought it for me. Me and my brother, we both had skateboards but I wasn’t really into it at the time and I didn’t have black griptape so that really like bugged me, so I didn’t want to use my board. And my next-door neighbour like, Lou and Dave [who...I don’t know, they skated around in Bletchley and, yeah, they used to have everyone go to their house and all skate out the front and that and I used to be a bit embarrassed to like go out on my rubbish board.

Preston Adviser Carol Moder Chair Nancy Caplow G. Allen Finchum ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This work is dedicated to the memory of my grandfather, Hershall "Jigger" Horton, a true craftsman, who taught me that there are so many important, valuable skills and tools that can’t be learned in a classroom alone. And to Mrs. Carol Preston, the most welcoming and genuine person I think I've ever known, who always kept my desk well- stocked with humanitarian literature, and who cared so sincerely about everyone she met, and taught me to care for people and our planet more deeply every day. First and foremost, I want to thank my adviser, Dr. Dennis Preston, whose encouragement and mentorship have fueled this project from the start. When I started graduate school, I don't think I would ever have imagined I'd be writing a dissertation about skateboarding, but your genuine interest in this topic, and all that you've done to help me go beyond description and into a deeper understanding of language and society have enabled this work. I thank you also for bringing me on as a lab assistant in 2014 when I was just a grungy little skater with very little idea of what I was doing in academia.
