Sophie Beale July 2020 i Abstract Keeping horses barefoot: a shared accomplishment Sophie Beale Introduction My research aimed to improve understanding of equine barefoot care and to show how horse owners work with others, particularly barefoot trimmers, to deliver this type of care. Methods Data were collected from trimmers and horse owners using in-depth interviews (face- to-face and telephone) and online questionnaires. Data collected via the trimmer interviews (n=6) were analysed using a grounded theory approach to facilitate the development of a conceptual model. Trimmer questionnaire data (n=58) and horse owner data (interviews: n=5; questionnaire responses: n=681) were used to support the conceptual model. Results The overarching conceptual model illustrated the relationships between essential elements of becoming and being a trimmer, regardless of trimmer barefoot beliefs. It comprised three elements: (i) a foot-centred approach, (ii) the provision of foot- centred care, and (iii) building and safeguarding reputation. Keeping a horse barefoot was shown to be a holistic, foot-centred approach to care. When making changes to the horse’s care or exercise, the effect of such changes on the horse’s feet took priority. The success of the approach was assessed by the extent to which the horse was comfortable barefoot (the foot-functionality goal). Foot-centred care was delivered using the balance management cycle (Assess, Plan, Do). Factors that affected the horse’s feet were assessed and findings from the assessment were used to develop a Plan. The Plan set out adjustments to care and exercise that were needed to help reach foot-functionality goals. The Do phase involved implementing the Plan. After a period that varied depending on individual circumstances, the cycle re-commenced. The success of the process was a shared accomplishment involving mainly the trimmer and horse owner, but also expert advisors and members of the horse owner’s social circle. The success of a trimmer’s business was also a shared accomplishment. Horse owners tended to find trimmers through word-of-mouth recommendations. Also, some owners decided to keep their horse barefoot after seeing how successful this approach was for other people’s horses. Trimmers employed several reputation- building and safeguarding strategies, including being selective about which clients they took on, providing a high level of customer service to support existing clients and ceasing to work with clients who were not implementing their advice. Conclusions Keeping a horse barefoot is a holistic, foot-centred approach to delivering care. It involves balancing the care, exercise and environmental factors that affect horses’ hooves. The approach is a co-production involving not only the horse owner and trimmer but also members of the owner’s equine and social networks. Trimmers’ businesses are reliant on reputation and they actively take steps to build and safeguard it. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank Professor Rumona Dickson, who was Director of Liverpool Reviews and Implementation Group (LRiG) at the University of Liverpool when I started my PhD, for providing the funding that allowed me to start this research. The Boston Conservatory, 2007 Committee Chair: Dr. Jonathan Kregor, Ph.D. Abstract The 1918 ballet, Parade, and its music by Erik Satie is a fascinating, and historically significant example of the avant-garde, yet it has not received full attention in the field of musicology. This thesis will provide a study of Parade and the avant-garde, and specifically discuss the ways in which the avant-garde creates a dialectic between the expressiveness of the artwork and the listener’s emotional response. Because it explores the traditional boundaries of art, the avant-garde often resides outside the normal vein of aesthetic theoretical inquiry. However, expression theories can be effectively used to elucidate the aesthetics at play in Parade as well as the implications for expressability present in this avant-garde work. The expression theory of Jenefer Robinson allows for the distinction between expression and evocation (emotions evoked in the listener), and between the composer’s aesthetical goal and the listener’s reaction to an artwork. This has an ideal application in avant-garde works, because it is here that these two categories manifest themselves as so grossly disparate.

For your consideration I propose a work tentatively titled “Flame”. I believe it to be simple-yet- compelling, symbolic, and appropriate to this setting. Dimensions will be 20 feet high by 14.5 feet wide by 14.5 feet deep. It sits on a 3.5 feet high by 9 feet in diameter base. (not accurately dimensioned in the 3D graphics) The composition. The design has substance, and yet, there is practically no impediment to drivers’ visibility. After review of the design by a structural engineer the flame flicks may need to be pierced with openings to meet the 150 mph wind velocity requirement. I see no problem in adjusting the design to accommodate any change like this. Fire can represent our passions, zeal, creativity, and motivation.     < Back to Euan Macleod’s profile EUAN MACLEOD Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, 1956, Macleod completed a Certificate in Graphic Design at Christchurch Technical Institute between 1974 and 1975 and a Diploma of Fine Arts (Painting) at the Canterbury University, Christchurch, from 1977 to 1979. He moved to Sydney in 1981. Macleod has an impressive solo exhibition history showing regularly in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Christchurch in addition to numerous group exhibitions, prizes and residencies. Twelve years after the first survey of his work was mounted by Newcastle Region Gallery in 1998, a comprehensive touring exhibition covering the years 1991 – 2009 was curated by Gavin Wilson for Tweed River Art Gallery. Also in 2010, Piper Press published a major monograph written by New Zealand author Gregory O’Brien. Macleod lives and works in Sydney. The portrayal of the horse in Western art was analysed from the Renaissance onwards in order to have a firm historical understanding. From this base of understanding, the potential for new image creation was discussed. Paintings and statues were the primary fo- cus of the thesis for its analysis. Possibilities for new and more positive images of power were explored through visuals featuring horses. The analysis suggested that because of the horse’s roots in art history as well as its powerful physical strength, status as a prey animal, and its gentle sensit- ivity, the horse was an image eminently suited for use in positing new and posit- ive non-toxic images of power. Further, the analysis suggested that these new explorations stand in opposition to power images and power conceptualisations based in toxic masculinity and patriarchy.
