An Occupational Perspective on the Lives of Women Who Experienced Sexual Assault While at University Life, Irrupted: An Occupational Perspective on the Lives of Women Who Experienced Sexual Assault While at University by Katherine Ellen Stewart A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Rehabilitation Sciences Institute University of Toronto © Copyright by Katherine Ellen Stewart 2019 Life, Irrupted: An Occupational Perspective on the Lives of Women Who Experienced Sexual Assault While at University Katherine Ellen Stewart Doctor of Philosophy Rehabilitation Sciences Institute University of Toronto 2019 Abstract Although sexual assault that occurs during university is known to have numerous significant consequences, many are believed to remain “hidden.” This dissertation research employed an occupational perspective to provide a more fulsome examination of the aftermath of sexual assault that occurs during university. Three distinct studies, yielding four manuscripts, were conducted. First, a review of the sexual assault literature was carried out. Findings suggested a clear but narrowly examined occupational aftermath of sexual assault. Next, women’s experiences of everyday living in the aftermath of sexual assault were explored through different forms of narrative: (a) memoirs written by women who had experienced sexual assault during university, and (b) interviews with women who had experienced sexual assault during university. These studies suggested an extensive occupational aftermath of sexual assault. Together, the findings of this dissertation research make five unique contributions to the sexual assault and occupational science literature. First, the findings suggest that an occupational perspective may be used to uncover some of the hidden consequences of sexual assault, specifically those related to human occupation. Second, the findings suggest that sexual assault that occurs during university is occupational life-altering. Sexual assault was ii found to have significant, widespread, and lasting consequences for women’s daily occupations, as well as for their occupational trajectories. Third, the findings suggest that sexual assault alters women’s occupational lives in ways that at once follow a pattern and are particular to the individual. Although broad patterns in changes to women’s occupations were identified, occupational choice and engagement were found to be idiosyncratic in the aftermath of sexual assault during university. Fourth, the findings suggest that the alterations produced by sexual assault necessitate the (re)building of one’s occupational life and self through conscious engagement in occupation. Last, the findings are suggestive of a model of occupational response following major life disruption. Further research is warranted to continue to develop an expanded understanding of what everyday living looks like after life disruption beyond sexual assault that occurs during university. iii Acknowledgments Engaging in this doctoral work has been a true privilege that has been made possible, and all the more enjoyable, by many; namely, my supervisory committee, the women who participated in this research, my colleagues and friends, my family, and the donors who funded this research. This violent rhetoric is evident in messages that have been circulated by prominent public figures, as well as entrenched in the policies and administrative responses addressing sexual violence on college campuses. The impact of such rhetoric is the perpetuation and affirmation of the sub-humanization of survivors of sexual trauma. In this thesis, I put disability studies scholarship in conversation with feminist theories on sexual violence and public art in order to highlight the interconnected history of sexism-ableism in the U.S. and the function of anti-rape art projects as artivist practices on college campuses. Specifically, I will be considering Duke University’s Breaking Out Campaign, the University of Chicago’s Clothesline Project, and Emma Sulkowicz’s Mattress Performance (undertaken at Columbia University). I use grounded theory and discourse analysis to interpret digital articles written in reaction to the art projects and to track three common trends in sexist-ableist campus community responses: the narrative of special treatment, the narrative of pathology, and the narrative of willful ignorance.

Jennifer Hirsch and Shamus Khan, New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 2019. In 2014, Columbia University had a problem with campus sexual assault. So did other universities, but Columbia was the site of a visible protest. To highlight university failure to respond to her sexual assault and those of others, undergraduate art student Emma Sulkowicz carried a 50-pound mattress everywhere she went on campus during her senior year.4 The compelling symbolism of the campaign (and likely its Ivy League context) generated coverage in the New York Times and other high-profile venues.5 Columbia is far from the only university to experience a public relations crisis related to its handling of sexual violence, but it may be unique in its response. In 2015, it enlisted—and funded—an interdisciplinary team of faculty members to engage in a multi-method study of undergraduate social life at Columbia and Barnard—the Sexual Health Initiative to Foster Transformation (SHIFT). Sex- ual Citizens, co-authored by anthropologist Jennifer Hirsch and sociologist Shamus Khan, is a product of this multiyear effort. Based on extensive ethnographic and interview research, the book offers a new framework for thinking about campus sex- ual assault. Taking a public health approach, Hirsch and Khan focus on context— offering a refreshing contrast to the tendency of sexual violence research to zero in on the characteristics of individual victims and perpetrators.

The policy broadens the scope of influence by Wellesley College in the event and prevention of sexual assault and harassment. According to Assistant Director of Health Education Claudia Trevor-Wright, the document applies to incidents on and off campus and is not limited to incidents involving just Wellesley College students. “The committee members strove to provide a sort of point of entry into what’s available to you no matter where you find yourself in relation to other students here and at other institutions,” Trevor-Wright said. While the policy cannot exert judicial influence off campus, it can provide students with confidential resources at Health Services, Stone Center Counseling Services and the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life to aid in the reporting process. The policy aims to encourage reporting of sexual misconduct on campus.
