In this lesson, we focus on the two essentials to bring out the best in others: invitation and challenge. Let’s label this grid to help define our four leadership styles:

• At the top of the vertical line write the words “High Invitation” and on the bottom write “Low Invitation”.

• Next, On the right side of the horizontal line write the words “High Challenge” and on the far left write “Low Challenge”.

• Jot notes and label each quadrant as we go through each leadership style: Cozy, Boring, Stressful, and Empowered.

Ultimately every organization gravitates to one of these four realities: • an empowered culture • a cozy culture • a boring culture • or a stressful culture.

THE INVITATION CHALLENGE MATRIX In this module you will take a deeper look at yourself and evaluate your natural strengths and weaknesses through the lens of the Invitation-Challenge Matrix.

We have discovered over the years that no one is naturally good at both high invitation and high challenge; every leader is naturally good at one over the other.

Let’s take a moment to assess your natural inclination toward either invitation or challenge!

Consider the organizations you have been a part of, the leadership training you have received, and your natural personality type.

Which culture, invitation or challenge, do you tend to create both at home and at work? Do you know? Take some time now to think about the culture you create at home and work by rating how each statement on the next page applies to you personally most of the time.
