PRESS RELEASE April 2012 12/29 TV Preview: Tales of Television Centre At BFI Southbank / Tue 15 May / 18:10 BFI Southbank is delighted to present a preview screening of Tales of Television Centre, the upcoming feature-length documentary telling the story of one of Britain’s most iconic buildings as the BBC prepares to leave it. The screening will be introduced by the programme’s producer-director Richard Marson The story is told by both staff and stars, among them Sir David Frost, Sir David Attenborough, Dame Joan Bakewell, Jeremy Paxman, Sir Terry Wogan, Esther Rantzen, Angela Rippon, Biddy Baxter, Edward Barnes, Sarah Greene, Waris Hussein, Judith Hann, Maggie Philbin, John Craven, Zoe and Johnny Ball and much loved faces from Pan’s People (Babs, Dee Dee and Ruth) and Dr Who (Katy Manning, Louise Jameson and Janet Fielding). As well as a wealth of anecdotes and revelations, there is a rich variety of memorable, rarely seen (and in some cases newly recovered) archive material, including moments from studio recordings of classic programmes like Vanity Fair, Till Death Us Do Part, Top of the Pops and Dr Who, plus a host of vintage behind-the-scenes footage offering a compelling glimpse into this wonderful and eccentric studio complex – home to so many of the most celebrated programmes in British TV history. INTRODUCTION The West Wight Chalk Downland HEAP Area has been defined on the basis of geology, topography and historic landscape character. It forms the western half of a central chalk ridge that crosses the Isle of Wight, the eastern half having been defined as the East Wight Chalk Ridge . Another block of Chalk and Upper Greensand in the south of the Isle of Wight has been defined as the South Wight Downland . Obviously there are many similarities between these three HEAP Areas. However, each of the Areas occupies a particular geographical location and has a distinctive historic landscape character. This document identifies essential characteristics of the West Wight Chalk Downland . These include the large extent of unimproved chalk grassland, great time-depth, many archaeological features and historic settlement in the Bowcombe Valley. The Area is valued for its open access, its landscape and wide views and as a tranquil recreational area. Most of the land at the western end of this Area, from the Needles to Mottistone Down, is open access land belonging to the National Trust. Significant historic landscape features within this Area are identified within this document. The condition of these features and forces for change in the landscape are considered. Management issues are discussed and actions particularly relevant to this Area are identified from those listed in the Isle of Wight HEAP Aims, Objectives and Actions. -

SPECIAL STAMP ISSUE 25th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain Date of issue: 13 September 1965 ‘Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.’ With these words Winston Churchill paid tribute to the men of the Royal Air Force who defended Britain against the German air assault in the autumn of 1940. Only months after the retreat from Dunkirk, Britain faced perhaps the darkest days of the entire war as the Luftwaffe launched an all-out bombardment intended to pave the way for a German invasion. For the first time in the history of warfare, an entire battle was fought in the air: the Battle of Britain took place between 10 July and 31 October 1940, reaching its climax in mid-September when the German bombers began to blitz London. By the end of the battle, the RAF had lost 911 aircraft with 414 pilots killed; Luftwaffe losses totalled 1,733 aircraft. REQUEST FOR A SPECIAL STAMP ISSUE September 1965 marked the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) planned a special commemoration during Battle of Britain Week, an event that had been held annually since the war. On 11 May 1964 L G Johnson, a holder of the Distinguished Flying Cross and Deputy General Secretary of the Royal Air Forces Association, wrote to the Postmaster General (PMG), Reginald Bevins MP, with a request that the Post Office issue special stamps to mark the anniversary. He wrote: ‘This turning point in our history ... should not be allowed to pass uncommemorated, and one very appropriate way which would bring the occasion to the minds of people both at home and overseas would be the issue of a special postage stamp or stamps as is customary on similar anniversaries of national importance or interest.’ Despite Johnson’s assertion that stamps commemorating ‘similar anniversaries’ were the norm, D H Beaumont of the Postal Services Department replied that a Battle of Britain issue would not be possible, based on the Post Office’s policy regarding special stamps. -

Over £50,000 (worth more than £15 million today) was donated by steelworkers, coal miners, factory workers and the people of Sheffield in penny donations to help found the University. Can have mini scarps which are individually identified in some local assessments. Large scale character influenced by rolling topography, medium to large size fields, fewer wooded hedges than the small scale type and can have large woodland blocks. Large blocks of ancient woodland and varied height hedgerow network which contrasts with areas of more open predominantly arable fields. Deeply rural quiet landscapes with sense of space and expansiveness uninterrupted by development the large woodland blocks add to the sense ruralness and of an undeveloped landscape. Low density road and lane network where this type occurs in mid and west Hampshire –higher density further east. -

Tony Hancock: BBC Publicity Shot for Hancock’s Half Hour, November 1956 The Tony Hancock Appreciation Society (THAS) Since its creation in 1976, the THAS has dedicated itself to preserving and promoting the works of Tony Hancock and, more crucially, to finding his broadcasts that were missing from the archives. Over the decades, these efforts have yielded a wealth of material, most notably lost episodes of his most beloved work on Hancock’s Half Hour for both television and radio. Many of these have now been located and returned to the BBC; some feature in this special series of Collectibles, now into 1 its third volume. However, many still remain lost at this time. In addition, our efforts have found other material – shows recorded before Hancock became a household name – from series such as Calling All Forces, Variety Bandbox and Star Bill. Again, examples of these can be found in this series. In the previous volumes, there was an extensive analysis of missing recordings from Hancock’s radio career, and, as ever, we remain hopeful that some of these recordings will emerge from private collections or, perhaps, the archives of the BBC or other institutions. In these notes, we will focus on a number of missing recordings and shows outside the ‘core’ work Hancock did on his eponymous series and those that preceded it. -
