Insistency analysis supports content analysis by considering lyrical repetition (motifs) over time as significant of artistic intent within a given body (population) of lyrics, in this case, those of Tom Waits.

An essential recording! TOM WAITS Bad As Me USA Gravelly-voiced poet and musical maverick Tom Waits returns with this strong batch of rocking blues stompers and tender ballads, joined by the likes of Keith Richards, Marc Ribot and David Hidalgo. Beginning with a train journey north to Chicago and ending in a bar on New Year’s eve (singing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ no less) this is a trip worth taking. Highly recommended! KIRAN AHLUWALIA Aam Zameen: Common Ground Canada Indo-Canadian vocalist Kiran Ahluwalia, known for her beautifully updated Ghazal music, this time does some continent hopping as she collaborates with desert blues sensations Tinariwen and Terakaft. From the opening take on Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s classic ‘Mustt Mustt’, propelled by handclaps and call and response vocals, we are in for an exciting cross-cultural musical feast. WILCO The Whole Love USA The 8th release by Jeff Tweedy and cohorts impressively reprises the various musical inclinations of this effortlessly creative group. From the off-kilter whirlwind of the opener to the epic beauty of the 12 minute closer, this is an album by a band at the top of their game.

Elvis est devenu has been.

  • Slate Interview
Tom Waits on His Grandma’s Pistol, His New Record, and Keith Richards By Seth Colter Walls | Posted Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, at 11:31 AM ET Tom Waits performs in Paris in 2008. Photo by PIERRE VERDY/AFP/Getty Images Tom Waits’ new record, Bad As Me, is his first album of brand new songs since 2004—though Waits will stop you right there and say that Orphans, a three-disc set of rarities from 2006, featured “a hell of a lot of what we call reconditioned songs,” new recordings of old standbys. “Who’s to say that when a song has been used it’s not any good anymore? Everybody’s all hung up on new, you know?” People aren’t just hung up on Bad As Me because it’s new. For the first time since Mule Variations, Waits has put out a record with the full range of his go-to song-forms. Real Gone (2004) went all-in on drum n’ dirge; the song-cycles Alice and Blood Money (both 2002) took their cues from stage works presented with director Robert Wilson. Bad As Me has the variety of instruments and composition styles of Rain Dogs and other Waits classics. I spoke with Waits about the new album earlier this month. Generally loath to speak in great detail about specific artistic choices, he says things like, “I’m not really conscious of those things,” or, “I’m not any different than anybody else.” Neither assertion may be true, but it’s best to let the man talk: He spins yarns mid-interview as impressively as he does on his records.

Jesus Comes Face-to-Face With The Devil In the Hole, On the Leash, Inside Himself Matthew 4: 1-11 Rev. Tom VandeStadt Dennis Murphy knows I like listening to Tom Waits. Unlike Dennis, I’m not a Tom Waits scholar. But I’m more than a casual listener, though I don’t know how anybody could be a casual listener of Tom Waits. One thing I like I about Tom Waits is the characters in some of his songs have interesting relationships with the devil. For example, the song Way Down in the Hole from the album Frank’s Wild Years, which by the way was a brilliant choice for the opening song in all six seasons of The Wire. In Way Down in the Hole, the character sings: You gotta keep the devil way down in the hole… Don’t pay heed to temptation For his hands are so cold You gotta help me keep the devil Way down in the hole Down in the hole, down in the hole Down in the hole, down in the hole Down in the hole, down in the hole You gotta keep the devil down in the hole Check it out on You Tube, it’s fantastic. You gotta keep the devil way down in the hole. Because if the devil gets out, watch out! The devil out of the hole means the devil out of control, and once the devil is out of control all bets are off. Who knows what the devil will do while loose, but make your life a living hell.
