The Association shall abide by the Statute which the above-mentioned, in their capacity of founder members, have submitted to me. ' STATUTE OF THE ASSOCIAZIONE FRA GLI EX MILITARI DEI REGI CORPI 'IRUPPE COLONIALI DELLA SOMALIA ··Article 1 There shall be constituted, with headquarters in Mogadiscio, the Associazion~ fra gli ex Militari dei Regi Corpi Truppe Coloniali. Article 2 ., . The aims of the Association shall be: . ,, (a) to associate all ex-sel:"Vicemen o.f the' Royal Corps of Colonial :.r'roOp$ . and the Zaptie and the Dubat Corps; (b) to protect the interests of the members in all fields and in every possible way; (c) to .·assist the widows and orphans of such ex-servicemen; · (d) toprotect the interests of ex-servicemen vis a vis the public authorities. T/PET.ll/6l5- English Page 6 (e) to adopt all measures for the greater advancement of members; (f) to further all other activlties designed to promote.the collective -interests of members; Article 3 The following may be accepted as members: (a) all ex-servicemen, of whatever rank, belonging to the various units of the Royal Corps of Colonial Troops of Somaliland; (b) all ex-servicemen, of whatever rank, belonging to the Dubat and Zaptie corps and to the P.A.I. Article 4 The Association may establish branches in the various inhabited centres of the Territory, provided there are at least fifteen members of the Association in each centre. Where there are less than fifteen members, the National Governing Council shall designate the nearest branch to which that group of members may be attached. Article 5 The Association shall be administered by a National Governing Council, composed of thirteen members,' elected annually at a General Meeting. · With-in the National Governing Council, a Chairman, Vice-:-Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer shall be elected. The Chairman shall,be the official representative of the Association. Should he be absent or incapacitated, the Vice-Chairman shall take his place, or, if the latter is absent, a Councillor designated by the Council. - Article 6 If during the course of the year the Council loses the services of six Councillors~ through resignation or any other cause, a General Meeting shall be convened within thirty days to elect members to replace them. Article 7 In order to be admitted to the Association members must make a written application attaching documents to_prove that they posses the ne?essary qualifications. Page 7 Article 8 A branch of the Association may be formed in every inhabited centre of the Territory where there ·are at least fifteen members. The Branch shall be administered by a Branch Committee composed, where there are less than fifty members, of a Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer.

Mukhw Somalia has enjoyed a unique role in the history of African nationalism. As the only country in Africa whose population is vinually homogeneous, most speak a common language, all are Muslims and claim to be relaled to a common (or several common) distant ancestors. One might therefore expect thai its independence movement would have been more unified than those ofother African territories where tribal and regional differences came to be reflected in political party groupings after World War Il. Also Somalia was the only country to be partitioned seveml times: once at the end of the 19th century during the scramble for Africa and again in the 1940's following the break-up of the lIalian East African Empire. This would seem to have been another factor that unified Somalis in a sense ofcommon nationalism. However, the drive for Somali independence gave rise to not just one but several political parties. Were these panies based on regional or "tribal" differences of a particular Somali son? Did they have differtnt views ofSomali nationalism and self-government? These questions are difficuh to answer, not only because source materials are limited but also because one Somali party, the Somali Youth League (SYL), came to dominate the political scene in the 1950's and was the majority party at the time of Somali independence in 1960.

    (i) THE SOCIAL STRUCTUBE OF SOumN SOMALI TRIB by Virginia I?lling A thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of London. October 197]. (ii) SDMMARY The subject is the social structure of a southern Somali community of about six thousand people, the Geledi, in the pre-colonial period; and. the manner in which it has reacted to colonial and other modern influences. Part A deals with the pre-colonial situation. Section 1 deals with the historical background up to the nineteenth century, first giving the general geographic and ethnographic setting, to show what elements went to the making of this community, and then giving the Geledj's own account of their history and movement up to that time. Section 2 deals with the structure of the society during the nineteenth century. Successive chapters deal with the basic units and categories into which this community divided both itself and the others with which it was in contact; with their material culture; with economic life; with slavery, which is shown to have been at the foundation of the social order; with the political and legal structure; and with the conduct of war. The chapter on the examines the politico-religious office of the Sheikh or Sultan as the focal point of the community, and how under successive occupants of this position, the Geledi became the dominant power in this part of Somalia. Part B deals with colonial and post-colonial influences. After an outline of the history of Somalia since 1889, with special reference to Geledi, the changes in society brought about by those events are (iii) described.

A casa non ne hanno un'idea e me ne guardo bene dal scriverne. *15 Agosto Mogadiscio Sono stato a Danane col Ten. dei CC.RR. Acampora che ha comandato il campo per oltre sei mesi e Scianò. Ci siamo giunti in due ore con un'Ardita del Comando. La strada passa per l'8 Km, l'Autocentro militare e prosegue lungo la costa sino a Gesira dove sono già stato una volta con l'Ing. Manfredi, poi s'interna allontanandosi dalla costa qualche po'. Si attraversano varie praterie fra la boscaglia sulla duna e la spiaggia divise o meglio separate dalla boscaglia da dune sabbiose. In certi punti si attraversano paesaggi addirittura danteschi. Dopo circa un'ora e tre quarti si giunge a Danane che si presenta bene vista dalla duna.

It is at once an expression and outgrowth of a new period of history, and a potentially strong influence on chan ing Somali society.- This thesis is an attempt to describe th development of this poetry, its structure and imagery, and th social and historical1 setting from which it arose. The characteristics of form and content of the heello ar from four major sources. Firstly, it is within a traditional group of genres, here called the Family of Miniature Genres, that the history of the modern poem begins, especially with t last miniature poem to develop: the belwo. Secondly, the modern poem has acquired characteristics from Somali classical poetry. Furthermore, it has borrowed” some features from abroad. And lastly, it has acquired some its structure from its own development through time- An hist ical approach^ beginning with the belwo, is a fruitful manner in which to view the question.

Contemporary novelist, short-story writer and playwright, Nuruddin Farah is the only Somali author to have achieved international renown for his works. Farah belongs to the second generation of modern African authors whose writings focus on post-colonial and post- nationalist concerns in their respective countries since independence from colonial rule. Their literary interests have shifted from, initially, the problematics of decolonization and nationalism to, more recently, those of self-rule. Simon Gikandi (2002:455) endorses this view and points out that the major concern of a contemporary African writer such as Farah is to break away from the paradigm of disillusionment with the ideals of nationalism, the latter no longer a manifestation of a common interest, and to turn instead to the issue of power and the 26 state.

Ali Farah and Scego, two of the most prominent authors of Italian postcolonial literature, address Italy's historical amnesia in their works through the personal stories/testimonies of their characters. The voices of Ali Farah’s and Scego’s protagonists narrate the intertwined histories between Italy and Somalia from Somalia’s inception as an Italian colony in 1908 up to more recent events of civil war, piracy, and famine. The dissertation examines how multimodal storytelling in these authors’ works helps capture the complexity of such histories, especially in the context of the Somali diaspora, which often requires a multitude of narrative modes in order to maintain personal bonds with a pre-civil war Somalia and with the ii people who have been killed or dispersed by war.
