Layout & Design Supresh Kharbe HAPPENINGS 3 THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE The Department of Economics, organized the first India Greater Mekong Sub-Region International Conference 2018 titled “Emerging Trends in Social Sciences and Management,” from November 15- 17 at the Directorate of Art and Culture, Goa. The College collaborated with FATER Academy of India; Nong Khai Business School, Thailand; Rajapark Institute Bangkok; The Institute of Social and Economic Initiatives Ukraine; FEBM National University of Laos and University of Management and Economics, Cambodia. The conference over its three days comprised of twelve technical sessions by eminent experts from diverse fields from around the country and abroad including Thailand, China, Oman, Vietnam, Russia and Cambodia. The delegates spoke on topics that ranged from management, marketing, tourism and governance, to building creativity among the youth, student centered learning, digital reality, cost management, agriculture and building of the spiritual quotient. Participation in the Conference totaled 100. Research paper presentations were also held simultaneously in two venues. In all 51 papers were presented by researchers from across the state, country and abroad belonging to departments of Economics, Sociology, Psychology, Management, Marketing, Commerce, English, History and more. National delegates came from Lucknow, Delhi, Warangal, Kurnool, Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Mumbai etc and international paper presenters travelled from Thailand, China, Vietnam and Cambodia. Pics on Pg. 28 Educational Tour to Impetus (2018-19) Himachal Pradesh Two day National level Inter-collegiate event “Impetus” organised on 11th and 12th January 2018-19 is an annual college event of Fr. Agnel An Educational Tour to the College of Arts and Commerce. The group visited, Manali, Tibetan Monastery, Hadimba Devi Temple, Gulab valley, Solang valley, Simla, Kufri, and Maharashtra were invited for the event. HAPPENINGS 5 Republic day Plastic collection drive The NSS unit of the college celebrated Republic Day on 26th January The NSS Unit of the college 2019. conducted a Community Plastic Collection Drive on the 25th of February 2019. The NSS volunteers collected plastic waste in the college premise as well as the nearby surrounding areas. The objective of the drive was to make students realise the underlying problem of plastic waste and its disposal. 73 volunteers participated for the drive. Dr.Savio Falleiro, Principal of Fr. Volunteers conducted Workshop on ‘Personal games and activities for the boys in the Home and also contributed and Effectiveness’ for EGP Students distributed grocery, toiletries and stationery items which they collected The Skill Development over the week. AT PEACE WITH MOTHER EARTH Peace it is that occupied a pivotal place at the India Peace Concert 2018 held on December 16, 2018 at the Fr Agnel College grounds. Organized by Fr. Agnel College, Pilar, in collaboration with Dimensions (Goa & Mumbai) and the Village Panchayats of St Andre Constituency, the 2nd edition of the Concert was a creative attempt at restoring “Peace with Mother Earth.” Present at the star studded function was Chief Guest Mr Shripad Naik, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) and Guest of honour, Mr Aleixo Reginald Lourenco, Hon MLA. Also present were Fr Mateus Fernandes (Provincial Superior, Goa Province), Fr Nazareth (Central Delegate Superior of Society of Pilar), Mr. Evancio Quadros (Chairperson Goa Dimensions), Mr Joseph Mathews (Chairperson, Mumbai Dimensions). Dr. Savio P. Falleiro (Principal) and Fr. Fredrick Rodrigues (Vice Principal). The evening festivities began with Shine On – the Band. Dr Fr. Allan Tavares sfx, the Convenor of the Concert , spelt out the theme: “We are called to breed peace so that the trending love for power is transformed into the power of love” saying that “those who promote peace are the ones who have real JOY.” The highlight of the evening was the National Peace Awards. The Life Time Achievement Award (Contribution towards Peace through Protection of Human Rights) was awarded to Major General (Dr) M P Singh. The Outstanding Visionary Award (Contribution towards Peace through conservation of Environmental Heritage) went to Fr Cosme Jose Da Costa from the Theological college Pilar. The Outstanding Visionary Award (Contribution towards Peace through Performing Arts) was bestowed on Mr Tomazinho Cardozo from Candolim while the Outstanding Visionary Award (Contribution towards Peace through Literature) went to Mr. Bonaventure D. Pietro from Anjuna. Interspersed with the entertainment programs were four Book launches by members of the Fr Agnel College staff. The Grassroot Peace Awards included the Earth Champion - Lifetime Achievement Award given to Mr Agnelo Correia. International Customs and Excise day: A visit to the Customs and Central Excise Museum Panaji The Department of Economics organised a visit to the Customs and Central Excise Museum Panaji – Goa on the 25th of January 2019 to commemorate the International Customs and Excise day celebrated on the 26th of January for FYBCom students. The visit started with a short documentary shown to the students on Indian Customs and Central Excise Department, followed by a guided tour through the museum. Students were explained the difference between customs and excise and then guided through the various galleries the museum houses namely- Customs Heritage gallery, Arms and Ammunitions gallery, Battle of wits gallery, seizure gallery, wildlife gallery, Central Excise gallery I and II, Narcotics gallery, International Customs gallery and Sports gallery .The galleries displayed an array of artefacts, and antics mostly seized item like coins, manuscripts, beautiful diorama displays, talk panels, displays of photographs and paintings. Elementary First Aid Course Unpublished earlier report The First Aid Course sponsored by the Rotary Club was held from 7th February to 9th February 2018 in the College hall Shalom. Thirty students were trained for in the course along with one teacher. The students were taught about the CPR, as well as to deal with various emergencies. Students were also taught how to tie bandages and deal with various types of wounds. The course was conducted by Dr Jorson Fernandes Surgeon Examiner, St. John Ambulance Association-Goa, along with a team of Nurses. On the last day students had to answer a 100 marks exam. 20 marks for the theory and eighty marks were for the practical. All students successfully cleared the exam. This certificate is valid till 08-02-2021. This certificate is useful for those students especially aspiring to work overseas or can be produce if need for the job requirement. Field Visit The College organised a field visit to Goa Waste Management Plant, Saligao for 23 students of Environmental Studies of First Year B Com and BA on 20th March, 2019. The field visit was also attended by Dr Fr Fredrick Rodrigues. The State of the Art Solid Waste Management plant is fully automated except for the sorting of dry waste which is a manual process. The plant is capable of treating 100 tonnes of waste per day and in addition to solid waste management generates power. The plant is also generating compost and also treats effluents so as to use this recycled water for gardening and non- drinking purposes. The full plant is controlled and monitored via a SCADA system and CCTV cameras. Book Exhibitions “OLD IS GOLD” the exhibition of old books cum sale was organised during 10th to 14th December 2018. Dr. Savio P. Falleiro, the Principal and Dr. Fr. Fredrick Rodrigues, the Vice-Principal inaugurated the exhibition. Any book was available for sale for Rs. 20/- only. The exhibition got good response. Book exhibition cum sale by Book Mate Book sellers was held on 22nd March 2019 from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. at Fr. Agnel College of Arts & Commerce, Pilar Goa. The book exhibition was open for all. Neighboring schools and the locals were invited to visit the exhibition. Documentation work Two books namely “Documentation on Tiatr” and “Documentation on Gopakapattam” were released at the hands of Union Minister for State for AYUSH, Mr. Shripad Naik at the India Peace Concert 2018. These books are unique and in-house publications of Fr. Agnel College of Arts & Commerce, Pilar Goa, and will be available for reference only at Fr. Agnel College Library. The books will help readers and researchers across the world the comfort to find different articles, findings and opinions pertaining to a single topic. These books were compiled by Mr. Milind Mhamal, Prof Soraya Rebello, Ludovico Fernandes, Pratiksha Malik and Samir Salelkar. Goa’s Opinion Poll – A compilation of research articles This book is compilation of research articles published on Goa’s Opinion Poll. Goa was liberated from Portuguese control on 19th December 1961. This book is compiled by Mr. Milind Mhamal, Mrs. Pratiksha Malik and Mrs. Lusy Rodrigues. The book is an in-house publication of Fr. Agnel College of Arts & Commerce, Pilar, Goa. Felicitation A Felicitation Programme was organised by Fr Agnel College, Pilar and D.H.E on 18th January 2019 at 12:30 p.m for Mr Ludovico Fernandes who completed 27 years of service as Library Attendant at Fr.Agnel College,Pilar. The representatives of D.H.E who were present for the function were Mrs Amita Desai and Mr Gajanan Gawandi. Ms Anita Fernandes, Asst Prof welcomed the gathering and compered the function. The Principal Dr.Savio Falleiro welcomed the D.H.E delegates and the staff of Fr Agnel College for the function. He also thanked Mr.Ludovico for his selfless contribution to the College. Vice-Principal Dr Fr. Fredrick Rodrigues addressed the gathering and he spoke about the qualities of hard work and dedication put in by Mr. Ludovico. The DHE delegates Mrs.Amita Desai spoke about the scheme launched in September by the DHE to felicitate the people who are retiring. Mr. Milind Mhamal, the Librarian spoke of his silent but effective and efficient way of functioning. The Principal and the Vice-Principal felicitated Mr Ludovico with a shawl and a Memento. The D.H.E felicitated Mr Ludovico with a Certificate of Appreciation and a Memento. It was followed by the release of the newsletter of the library bulletin Full Circle which is a quarterly publication. Mr .Ludovico thanked the staff and the DHE. The function ended with Assoc. Prof.Mario D’Souza, Director of Physical Education Mr Agnelo Dias, Asst. Prof. Andrew Antao and Asst. Prof. Jayesh Raut who spoke on the qualities of Mr. Ludovico. ÂÂThe Department of English Standup Comedy The Department of English conducted a Stand Up Comedy show Gag Gig at Impetus 2019, a National level inter collegiate event held on 12th January, 2019 in Shalom. The event had two rounds. Round One provided the participant’s free reign to design their own 5 minute solo gig on any topic/s of their choice. While Round Two was a 2 minute capsule where the participants had to speak on the spot on a topic provided by the judges. The Runnerup was Team Ameythst, GVM Ponda College, while the winning standup comedian at Impetus was Kingsley Dias from Team Topaz, St Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim. The Judges were Mr Colin Coelho, a Distinguished Toastmaster from the Ana Fonte Toastmaster’s Club, Mr Adriel Alvares, a Media Consultant at Art Ads, Margao and Mr Jayesh Raut, Assistant Professor at Fr Agnel College and a theatre personality of repute.

Spell-bound The Department of English organized “Spell-bound,” the English language Quiz competition on February 9, 2019 Teams consisted of two students. A total of 32 teams (64 students) from all streams participated in the written Word Power quiz. There was no restriction on the number of entries per class. The questions ranged from Wuzzles (Word Puzzles), synonyms, word search Puzzles and Jumble Tumble. The following winners were announced on the E-Board and awarded certificates: I. Field Trip Twenty eight students of FYBA (A) English accompanied by their teacher Ms. Maria Da Cruz went to Ravindra Bhavan on February 20, 2019 for the afternoon show of a tiatr “Battli Soreachi, Tikett Mornnachi.” The Konkani play was a critique on the ills of alcoholism and with its trademark wit and slapstick humor, the tiatr delivered a very strong social message. Konkani, the mother tongue, touches a chord with many students and this activity was a way of getting the student to analyze and review a contemporary work. It was a fun means of learning the craft of reviewing. The students were required to write a review which is part of an ISA where their critical and analytic skills were evaluated. Wordsup Wordsup 3.0, a National Level Inter-collegiate Festival was held on February 18 and 19, 2019 at St Xavier’s College, Mapusa. The Department of English Fr Agnel College, coordinated the college team of 19 students that participated. The events included a spell bee, poetry and rhyme, e-scrabble, letter writing, story writing, wall painting, theatre, a treasure hunt, blogging, stand-up comedy, JAM, crosswords, instagram, a quiz contest, rap battles among others. Myron Lucas (FYBA B) and Aviton Crasto (FYBCom A) won the third place in I-sing for Icing (Singing). HAPPENINGS 25 Sewage Treatment and Dispersal System The Department of English in collaboration with the Eco Committee organized an Awareness talk on S.T.A.D. (Sewage Treatment and Dispersal System) which dealt with recycling sewage in an environmentally friendly manner on March 6, 2019 in the College Mini Hall from 10.30 to 11.30 am. Capt. Joseph Lobo, Proprietor, Sustainable Designed Solutions who delivered the talk, spoke of his philosophy and commitment to the environment, provided details of the bio-reactor he has designed, gave examples of some of the successful installations in the State and also attempted to transform the mind of students to look at human waste as valuable resource and maybe even contemplate a career in this field. Poetry Recitation Competition To commemorate Communal Harmony Week, the Faculty of Languages organized a Poetry Recitation Competition on the theme, ‘Peace and Harmony’ on 18th December 2018 at 10.30 a.m in the FYBA - A class. Students could perform in any of the following languages: Hindi, Konkani, English or Marathi. Participants had to identify an existing poem on the said theme and recite it. Time limit allotted was 5 minutes. Santoshi Bakal, Satyajeet and Diksha won the first three prizes respectively.

ÂÂCleanliness Committee Poster Making Competition – Your Space The Cleanliness Committee organized an Interclass Poster making competition, titled ‘Your Space’ on February 11, 2019 from 12.00 noon to 1pm at Shalom. The poster was required to highlight cleanliness and hygiene in the Girl’s Common Room and toilets. Teams consisted of 3 students and there were three teams that participated. Congratulations to the winners: I. Ms. Gaylin Afonso, Ms. Jeetali Vengurlekar and Mr. Mohammed Jainuddin (FYBCom – C) II. Ms Kalash Kankonkar, Ms. Saloni Naik and Sakshi Khandolkar (FYBCom – B). III. Bin It & Win it The Committee also organized an Interclass contest ‘Bin It & Win It’. Each class has to create an innovative attractive eco-friendly Dustbin that encourages usage. The dustbin had to be made and not purchased and the finished product has to be submitted on February 11, 2019 at 12.00 noon at Shalom. Ms. Jeetali Vengurlekar (FYBCom – C) won the first place. Impeccable Classroom The Impeccable Classroom contest was initiated where a team scrutinized the classrooms at the end of each day. Class CR’s had to ensure that the classrooms were kept clean; no litter, no waste, the board wiped clean and electricity switches turned off. TYBCom B, Room No. 202 was the class that took care of all the above and undertook other classroom cleanliness initiatives. The entire class was awarded a keychain each for their efforts. Menstrual Health and Hygiene The Cleanliness Committee in association with the Women’s Cell, Fr Agnel College, Pilar and JCI Verna Tattva organized a Rally on the theme “Menstrual Health and Hygiene,” on March 8, 2019 at 8.45 am from Agassaim Church Square to Fr Agnel 26 College, Pilar to commemorate International Women’s Day. Fifty college students who were provided with a T-shirt, cap, a sanitary pack and banners marched on the National Highway as part of this Awareness Rally. On completion of the walk, they were given refreshments and a certificate of participation. Talk – Menstrual Hygiene and Cleanliness The Cleanliness Committee in association with the Women’s Cell, Fr Agnel College, Pilar and JCI Verna Tattva organized a talk on the theme “Menstrual Hygiene and Cleanliness,” on March 8, 2019 from 10.30 to 11.30 am in the College Mini Hall to commemorate International Women’s Day. 150 students from FYBA and FYBCom attended the talk that was delivered by Ms. Manasvi, President, JCI Verna Tatva. She addressed the various taboos associated with menstruation and spoke at length on the need for cleanliness to be maintained during the menstrual cycle as well as the general health and diet of the girls. In addition she spoke of the psychological implications and advised students, both male and female, to be more open minded, less shy and definitely more considerate. The talk ended with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr Biula Pereira. ÂÂAlumni Association

‘Impetus’, an National Inter-Collegiate event organised by the College has been fully supported by the Alumni Association. All the dignitaries which were invited were alumni of the College. This was held on 11th and 12th January, 2019. The Cleanliness prize for the class was sponsored by the Alumni Association. This was to inculcate the sense of cleanliness and orderliness in their respective classes.

Annual Day Fr. Agnel College of Arts and Commerce, Pilar organised its Annual Day for the academic year 2018 – 2019 on 23rd March, 2019 at the College Hall ‘Shalom’. The day began with a prayer dance performed by the students of the College. As a mark of respect to our late C.M. Shri Manohar Parrikar two minute silence was observed. The Principal Dr. Savio P. Falleiro welcomed the gathering which was followed by a song ‘You raise me up’. Rev. Dr. Fredrick Rodrigues, the Vice Principal of the college then presented a report of the college activities held for the academc year 2018-19. This was followed by a hymn ‘Jesus Thank You’ by our students. This was followed by a Prize distribution ceremony (academic) which was compered by Mrs. Hazel Colaco – Associate Professor, Department of Commerce. All the students were awarded for excellence in the field of education which was followed by a song ‘As the Deer’. The Chief Guest for the function, Rev. Fr. Mateus Fernandes, Provincial, Goa Province, Society of Pilar, then delivered his address followed by a hymn ‘Tunch Mhozo Somi’. This was followed by the non-academic prize distribution ceremony wherein students were acknowledged for bringing laurels to the institution in various fields like intercollegiate cultural events, sports, NSS, NCC, etc. A book titles ‘Goa’s Opinion Poll’ was also released on the occasion, followed by the award for Mr. and Miss Agnelite 2018-2019. Farewell Fr. Agnel College of Arts and Commerce, Pilar organised a Farewell function for the Third Year Students (Arts, Commerce and B.C.A.) for the academic year 2018 – 2019 on 5th April, 2019 at the College Hall ‘Shalom’. The day began with a solemn Mass at 9:30am to invoke God’s blessings and thank Him for the gift of our students. The theme was ‘Go, Discover, Explore, Leave a Mark’. Rev. Fr. Carson Dourado s.f.x. was the main celebrant for the Mass, along with Rev. Fr. Fredrick Rodrigues s.f.x. and Rev. Fr. Milton Rodrigues s.f.x. HAPPENINGS 27 This mass was followed by a short break wherein refreshments were served. The Principal Dr. Savio P. Falleiro welcomed the students formally wherein he mentioned about certain things they should remember in life. This was followed by a cultural programme wherein there was an instrumental performance by the students followed by a mash- up dance. Dr. Mario D’Souza, Associate Professor, Department of Economics then gave a short motivational speech to the students. To enthrall everyone a mando performance by the students was held which was followed by a speech by Rev. Fr. Carson Dourado, the Chief Guest for the function. Fr. Agnel College of Arts & Commerce, Pilar, Goa, ranked among the Best top 150 Colleges in India in Arts & Commerce (India Today Ranking 2019) 30 ÂÂDepartment of Physical Education Traditional Sports Festival-2019 Fr Agnel College of Arts and Commerce held its fourth edition of Traditional Sports Festival on 19th February 2019. It has been the endeavour of the College to promote and revive the traditional sports amongst today’s gadget savvy generation. This year the unique sports festival drew ten teams from various colleges and higher secondary schools across the State. An extravaganza of eight traditional Goan games like Hu-tu-tu, Logorio, Langdi, Koynobal etc. provided a platform for the young enthusiasts to relive the glory of the past. The festival was inaugurated at the hands of Adv. Esperdiao Dias. Around 350 students participated in the festival. Traditional Sports festival 2019 saw Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Quepem emerge as the champions while M.E.S. College of Arts and Commerce, Zuarinagar, bagged the Runners up trophy. Trophies and certificates were distributed to the winners and participants by the Chief Guest of the valedictory function, Rev Fr Andrew Silvera s.f.x, Principal, Fr Agnel Higher Secondary School, Pilar. Cash prizes for the winners and runners-up were sponsored by Adv. Esperdiao Dias, Mr Peter Vaz, Mr Pradip Da Costa, Azoba Furnitures and Mr Lavino Rebello. The Sports Director of Fr.
