LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear SMOW Community,

If I am honest, I am a pushover for emotional viral videos. There are two kinds in particular that always move me: returning soldiers surprising their families and people who are deaf being able to hear for the first time after receiving a cochlear implant. One of these cochle- ar implant videos is especially beautiful because it shows two amazing things happening to a young lady who received it. After receiving a cochlear implant, patients are sometimes over- come with emotions when the device is turned on for the first time and the patient can gain or regain hearing. One young woman, on receiving an implant, is seen becoming very emotional when the new device is activated. Under the watchful eye of her mother and her boyfriend, she reacts to the sound of her own and her mother’s voices. Then, among the other ‘first things’ she heard when the implant was activated, was a marriage proposal from her boyfriend who got down on one knee. There are two powerful elements in this video: a deaf person suddenly being able to hear and a proclamation of love being among the first words the person hears. As it turns out, those two ele- ments are present in the amazing story of this weekend’s gospel: the healing of a deaf man and the amazing realiza- tion that he is not only healed, but he is loved by Jesus.

Miracles are by their nature “extraordinary,” but this miracle has some interesting elements to be sure. There is a much stronger physical aspect to this healing on Jesus’ part than in most of His other miracles: touching the man’s ears and touching the man’s tongue. Jesus’ spitting and using saliva in healings is unusual but something He sometimes did, as with the healing of the blind man in Bethsaida in Matthew 8. “And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” He did the same in John 9 with the healing of the man born blind. “Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud.” Jesus is the worker of extraordinary miracles, the divine healer who came to set people free, not only spiritually, but also emotionally and physically as well.

Jesus is also the savior of the outcast. We saw in the text immediately preceding today’s gospel that Jesus showed com- passion to a Gentile Syrophoenician woman. We also saw that His doing so said something amazing about the reach and the extent of God’s love. We see the same here but in a more creative way. Jesus left a largely Gentile area to go to another largely Gentile area. Even so, His route was perplexing. Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. Simply put, if one wanted to go from Tyre to the re- gion of the Decapolis, one would not normally go through Sidon seeing as though it is the opposite way of the Decapo- lis. It is widely agreed that with this miracle Jesus was fulfilling the Messianic prophecy of 35: “Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy.” After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. This use of saliva is jarring to us as it no doubt was to them, but this image is power- ful. There is creative power in the mouth of Jesus. Out of the mouth of Jesus He creates new creation, He makes all things new.

In the late fourth century, the early father, St. Ambrose of Milan, writes about a ceremony that was done when a catechumen was baptized. They picked up on the story of Jesus opening the deaf man’s ears and they applied it to the person being baptized. The pastor would moisten his fingers and touch the person and say that word, “Ephphatha,” which is to open wide. St. Ambrose and others recognized that in Holy Baptism, Jesus was working once again to do an eternal healing. When Jesus speaks his word to us, things happen. Our ears are opened. We begin to hear the word of the Lord in faith and bearing fruit. Our tongue is loosed, loosed to speak and sing the praises of our God. In the bap- tism rituals performed in church, the priest blesses the ears of every infant, that they might one day hear the word of God. And blesses their mouth, that they might one day give God thanks and praise.

Almighty God, you are the source of health and healing. In you there is calm, and the one true source of peace. Grant to each one of us your children, an awareness of your presence, and give us perfect confidence in you. In all pain and wea- riness and anxiety, teach us to yield ourselves to your never-failing care, knowing that your love and power surround us, trusting in your wisdom and providence to give us health and strength and peace. We make this prayer through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessings,

Fr. Rich

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - SEPTEMBER 5, 2021

THE MESSIAH FORETOLD AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Today’s story of the cure of a deaf man with a speech Sunday: Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time impediment is a good example of how much is contained in Monday: Labor Day; Rosh Hashanah a simple miracle story. The Greek word mogilalos appears (Jewish New Year 5782) begins at sunset only here in all of the New Testament. It is a technical term referring to someone with a stammer. It is also used only Wednesday: The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary once in the entire Jewish scriptures, in the passage that we Thursday: St. Peter Claver read today as our first reading from Isaiah. Clearly, by his Saturday: Patriot Day; Blessed Virgin Mary choice of this precise word Mark wants us to recognize that what Jesus is doing is the fulfillment of what Isaiah had pre- FEAST OF FAITH dicted centuries earlier. In the liturgy, remembering is action. “Do this,” the messianic age, “your mouth shall be opened to Jesus said. In the Eucharist, we remember by doing. And as speak” (24:26). The sophistication of Mark’s narrative is we remember, the sacrifice of Jesus is renewed, truly made further revealed when we realize that there are multiple levels within a single reference.
