Read the chart, Analyzing Prose, on p. 148, for the different elements that you should consider in analyzing a prose selection to get the most out of it. WHAT WILL YOU NEED TO DO? The first thing you will need to do when you begin Section II is to decide the order in which you want to answer the questions. Just as you can choose the order in which to answer the selections in Section I, you can choose the order in which to write your essays. Scan the questions and passages and prioritize them. First, choose the question and passage that are easiest for you, and work your way up to the most difficult. That often means doing the open essay last. Remember that all three essays are worth the same amount--approximately 18 percentage points apiece--so you CHAPTER 5 will not earn any bonus points by writing the most difficult essay first, and you may tire yourself out. When you are ready to answer the prose question, you must read the question and passage several times. READING THE MATERIAL The mistake that students often make is writing an essay about something other than the question they are asked to answer. It may be a fabulous "9" essay in all other ways, but if it does not answer the question, it will earn you a low score. First, identify the type of essay question you are being asked to answer. Is it asking you for interpretation, synthesis, comparison, and/or evaluation of the selection? Underline the inaportant points or key words in the question. If you are being asked to compare elements in two given passages, what are those elements? (The prose essay question may involve two passages.) Underline compare and the required elements. Are you being asked to explain how the writer’s use of a motif affects the mood? Underline explain, motif and mood. You now know that one of the things you will need to look for as you read is a motif. Restate the question to yourself--paraphrase itmto be sure you tmderstand what you are being asked to do. Brainstorm or list ideas and thoughts, but do not outline. Outlining wastes time. What you want to do is analyze the passage. List how each literary elenaent enhances the communication in the passage. Make another list of examples and supporting evidence from the passage. Review anything you underlined in the passage to include in the lists. Study Strategy Check through your notes and lists and develop your thesis. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to these representations, in order to show how the interlinked texts of a nascent commercial culture initiated the creation of a colonial character, identified by Epeli Hau’ofa as the looming “ghost of Captain Cook.” The introduction sets out the circumstances of Cook’s death and existing metropolitan reputation in 1779. It situates the figure of Cook within contemporary mechanisms of ‘celebrity,’ related to notions of mass metropolitan culture. It argues that previous accounts of Cook’s fame have tended to overemphasise the immediacy and unanimity with which the dead Cook was adopted as an imperialist hero; with the result that the role of the scene within colonialist histories can appear inevitable, even natural. In response, I show that a contested mythology around Cook’s death was gradually constructed over the three decades after the incident took place, and was the contingent product of a range of texts, places, events, and individuals. The first section examines responses to the news of Cook’s death in January 1780, focusing on the way that the story was mediated by, first, its status as ‘news,’ created by newspapers; and second, the effects on Londoners of the Gordon riots in June of the same year.

    THE STORY OF DOCTOR JOHNSON SYDNEY CASTLE ROBERTS JOHNSON'S WORLD On the title-page of The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D., by James Boswell, Esq., the work to which this little book is a stepping-stone, Boswell claims that the story of Dr Johnson's life exhibits "a view of literature and literary men in Great-Britain, for near half a century, during which he flourished." It is no idle claim. Indeed, Boswell might have gone a great deal further, for his story is not merely concerned with books and bookish men, but with men and women in every rank of society. Kings and cottagers, statesmen and shopkeepers, bishops and play-actors, rich brewers and penniless poets, dukes and innkeepers, country parsons and gay young men of the town, street beggars and fashionable ladies—all play their part in the story and shew us a picture of the English world in the eighteenth century such as no history-book can give.     228 SOFIA PHILOSOPHICAL REVIEW Beckett, Samuel Johnson, and... the “Vacuity of Life” Emilie Morin (University of York, UK) In the “Human Wishes” notebooks, Beckett draws a complex picture of Dr. Johnson, favouring the moralist devoured by love for Mrs. Thrale and the autopsy-defying medical enigma over the moral and political writer at the centre of literary London. The fickle, inconsistent and atomised figure that emerges from these fragments, a voice reduced to a catalogue of anecdotes and aphorisms, is far removed from the Johnson later celebrated by Beckett as his faithful and ubiquitous shadow. How, then, might we reconcile Beckett’s readings of and claims about Johnson? Drawing upon the important body of scholarship dealing with Johnson’s influence, this article argues for the necessity of reading the significance of Johnson for Beckett in terms other than those addressed in Beckett’s oeuvre and acknowledges Johnson as an astute observer of that which lies beyond the boundaries of philosophical concern, rather than simply as a reservoir of idiosyncrasies and witticisms. Indeed, there is a strong case for understanding Beckett’s other Sam as a maverick humanist concerned with the ‘vacuity of life’, receptive to melancholy as a source of profound insight, enamoured with social justice and indignant about English policy in Ireland. Locating Beckett’s interest in Johnson at the level of the latter’s aspirations towards a moral and political philosophy carries important implications for Beckett’s peculiar reimagining of Johnson in an Irish context. Here, such Hibernisation is shown to operate as a vehicle for a pessimistic humanism inferred from Johnsonian morals, in which the possibility of betterment is overshadowed by the vicissitudes of the capricious mind.

His father, Michael page 2 / 204 Johnson, was a bookseller, highly respected by the cathedral clergy, and for a time sufficiently prosperous to be a magistrate of the town, and, in the year of his son's birth, sheriff of the county. He opened a bookstall on market-days at neighbouring towns, including Birmingham, which was as yet unable to maintain a separate bookseller. The tradesman often exaggerates the prejudices of the class whose wants he supplies, and Michael Johnson was probably a more devoted High Churchman and Tory than many of the cathedral clergy themselves. He reconciled himself with difficulty to taking the oaths against the exiled dynasty. He was a man of considerable mental and physical power, but tormented by hypochondriacal tendencies. His son inherited a share both of his constitution and of his principles. Long afterwards Samuel associated with his childish days a faint but solemn recollection of a lady in diamonds and long black hood. The lady was Queen Anne, to whom, in compliance with a superstition just dying a natural death, he had been taken by his mother to be touched for the king's evil.
