When we try to picture to ourselves the intellectual and moral state of Europe in the Middle Ages, some fixed and almost stereotyped ideas immediately suggest themselves. We think of the nations immersed in a gross mental lethargy; passively witnessing the gradual extinction of arts and sciences which Greece and Rome had splendidly inaugurated; allowing libraries and monuments of antique civilisation to crumble into dust; while they trembled under a dull and brooding terror of coming judgment, shrank from natural enjoyment as from deadly sin, or yielded themselves with brutal eagerness to the satisfaction of vulgar appetites. Preoccupation with the other world in this long period weakens man's hold upon the things that make his life desirable. Philosophy is sunk in the slough of ignorant, perversely subtle disputation[2] upon subjects destitute of actuality. Theological fanaticism has extinguished liberal studies and the gropings of the reason after truth in positive experience. Society lies prostrate under the heel of tyrannous orthodoxy. We discern men in masses, aggregations, classes, guilds—everywhere the genus and the species of humanity, rarely and by luminous exception individuals and persons. -

The following treatise on Greek Love was written in the year 1873, when my mind was occupied with my Studies of Greek Poeis. I printed ten copies of it privately in 1883. It was only when T read the Terminal Essay appended by Sir Richard Burton to his translation of the Arabian Nights in 1886, that I became aware of M. H. E. Meier's article on Paederastie (Ersch and Gruber's Encyclopcedie, Leipzig, Brock- haus, 1837). My treatise, therefore, is a wholly independent production. This makes Meier's agreement (in Section 7 of his article) with the theory I have set forth in Section X, regarding the North Hellenic origin of Greek Love, and its Dorian character, the more remarkable. That two students, working separately upon the same mass of material, should have arrived at similar conclusions upon this point strongly confirms the probability of the hypothesis. -

What Everybody Gets Wrong About Jekyll and Hyde Steven Padnick And when I say everybody, I mean everybody. Not just most people today don’t understand the original story—though that’s true—but every retelling of the story, from the earliest stage plays to Steven Moffat’s otherwise brilliant miniseries Jekyll, misses a key point of Robert Louis Stevenson’s original story: There is no Mr. Hyde. Edward Hyde is not a separate personality living in the same body as Henry Jekyll. “Hyde” is just Jekyll, having transformed his body into something unrecognizable, acting on unspecified urges that would be unseemly for someone of his age and social standing in Victorian London (i.e. some combination of violence and sex. Torture is specifically mentioned). Jekyll did not create a potion to remove the evil parts of his nature. He made a potion that allowed him express his urges without feeling guilty and without any consequences besmirching his good name. That’s also why he names his alter ego “Hyde,” because Hyde is a disguise, to be worn and discarded like a thick cloak. He might as well have called Edward “Mr. Second Skin,” or “Mr. Mask.” It’s important that it’s Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde. Jekyll is a respected professor. Hyde is a lower class schlub. Hyde is also much younger than Jekyll. Both of these facts allow Jekyll as Hyde to get away with a lot worse behavior. -

In recent years, questions have been continuously brought up about how we portray violence, sexuality, gender, race, and many other issues in popular media directed towards young people, particularly video games. -
Jekyll, Hyde and the Victorian Construction of Criminal Working-Class Masculinities
Athens Journal of Law - Volume 7, Issue 2, April 2021 – Pages 233-252 Jekyll, Hyde and the Victorian Construction of Criminal Working-Class Masculinities By Lydia Katsouli Pantzidou* Violent crime has long been associated with ideas of insane and/or intrinsically dangerous masculinities in the global north. Victorian Gothic literature, generated during a period when positivist discourse around dangerousness, madness and crime was gaining in authority and coherence, provides particularly useful insights into the narratives underpinning these associations. This paper focuses on the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), which, being a work of cautionary horror written during an era of powerful cultural fascination with violent urban crime is particularly rich in such discourse. A range of methodological tools borrowed from literary criticism, legal studies and discourse analysis turn Stevenson's novella into a penetrative lens to examine the anxieties of 19th century medico-legal thinking. The many layers of the Jekyll-Hyde binary are analysed along a series of other relevant binaries that characterise many Victorian narratives around crime: reason against insanity, normativity against deviance, and respectable bourgeois masculinities against uncontrollable working-class masculinities, whose savage sexuality poses a threat to social order. Contextualised historically as part of the wider fin de siècle preoccupation with degeneration theory, as well as legally, having followed a long series of legislative and policing moves to control the disconcerting underclasses amassing in urban spaces, the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde arises as a uniquely informative testament of the profound contradictions of a terrified post-Industrial Revolution Europe – what Moretti (1982) would call a dialectic of fear. -
