  • Complexity in the Comic and Graphic Novel Medium: Inquiry Through Bestselling Batman Stories
Complexity in the Comic and Graphic Novel Medium: Inquiry Through Bestselling Batman Stories PAUL A. CRUTCHER DAPTATIONS OF GRAPHIC NOVELS AND COMICS FOR MAJOR MOTION pictures, TV programs, and video games in just the last five Ayears are certainly compelling, and include the X-Men, Wol- verine, Hulk, Punisher, Iron Man, Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Watchmen, 300, 30 Days of Night, Wanted, The Surrogates, Kick-Ass, The Losers, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and more. Nevertheless, how many of the people consuming those products would visit a comic book shop, understand comics and graphic novels as sophisticated, see them as valid and significant for serious criticism and scholarship, or prefer or appreciate the medium over these film, TV, and game adaptations? Similarly, in what ways is the medium complex according to its ad- vocates, and in what ways do we see that complexity in Batman graphic novels? Recent and seminal work done to validate the comics and graphic novel medium includes Rocco Versaci’s This Book Contains Graphic Language, Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics, and Douglas Wolk’s Reading Comics. Arguments from these and other scholars and writers suggest that significant graphic novels about the Batman, one of the most popular and iconic characters ever produced—including Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, and Lynn Varley’s Dark Knight Returns, Grant Morrison and Dave McKean’s Arkham Asylum, and Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s Killing Joke—can provide unique complexity not found in prose-based novels and traditional films. Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way.

Please be patient when you call if we are not here, we promise to get back to you as soon as possible. Our normal hours are Monday through Friday 9:00AM-5:00PM Pacific Time. You can always send e-mail requests and we will reply as soon as we are able. All comics that are stickered below $10 have been omitted as well as paperbacks, Digests, Posters and Artwork and Magazines. I also removed the mid-grade/priced issue if there were more than two copies, if you do not see a middle grade of an issue number, just ask for it. They are available on the regular website www.terryscomics.com. If you are looking for non-key comics from the 1980's to present, please send us your want list as we have most every issue from the past 35 years in our warehouse. We have been fortunate to still have acquired some amazing comics during this past challenging year. What is left from the British Collection of Pre-code Horror/Sci-Fi selection, has been regraded and repriced according to the current market. 2021 started off great with last year’s catalog and the 1st four Comic book conventions. Unfortunately, after mid- March all the conventions have been cancelled. We still managed to do a couple of mini conventions between lockdowns and did a lot of buying on a trip through several states as far east as Ohio.

The Complete Skywald Checklist This index is as complete as possible given Skywald’s custom of often dropping credits off stories, hiding credits in the art of the story {mostly under Hewetson’s reign—in windowsills, gables, panel borders, as debris, etc.}, the heavy use of pseudomyns & single names and the miscrediting of stories to the wrong artist. Many of the mysteries regarding credits have been solved by access to Al Hewetson’s notes & checklists as well as the extensive aid of Christos N. Gage. PRIVILEGED ATTORNEY-CLIENT COMMUNICATION EXECUTIVE SUMMARY SECOND AMENDED AND RESTATED LICENSE AGREEMENT (“SPIDER-MAN”) CREATIVE ISSUES This memo summarizes certain terms of the Second Amended and Restated License Agreement (“Spider-Man”) between SPE and Marvel, effective September 15, 2011 (the “Agreement”). 1. CHARACTERS AND OTHER CREATIVE ELEMENTS: a. Exclusive to SPE: . The “Spider-Man” character, “Peter Parker” and essentially all existing and future alternate versions, iterations, and alter egos of the “Spider- Man” character. All existing (as of 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that are “Primarily Associated With” Spider-Man but were “Inadvertently Omitted” from Schedule 6. The Agreement contains detailed definitions of these terms, but they basically conform to common-sense meanings. All newly created (after 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that first appear in a work that is titled or branded with “Spider-Man” or in which “Spider-Man” is the main protagonist (but not including any team- up work featuring both Spider-Man and another major Marvel character that isn’t part of the Spider-Man Property). The origin story, secret identities, alter egos, powers, costumes, equipment, and other elements of, or associated with, Spider-Man and the other Creative Elements covered above. BLACK LABEL/HILL HOUSE SUMMER/FALL 2020 CATALOG Summer & Fall 2020 From captivating and complex superhero titles to terrifying horror tales, DC Black Label is committed to telling mature and timeless stand-alone stories. These collections for Summer/Fall 2020 are perfect for everyday readers looking for accessible and distinctive jumping-on points. First, the White Knight saga continues! Sean Murphy returns as writer and artist on Batman: Curse of the White Knight, the sequel to his blockbuster Batman: White Knight. As Batman prepares to reveal his identity, the Joker and Azrael team up to wield a shocking piece of lost history that will corrupt Batman’s legacy and shake Gotham to its foundation. In Harley Quinn & The Birds of Prey, Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti return to have some fun with the character they revolutionized; and Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino explore the crooked corridors of Joker’s mind in Joker: Killer Smile. DC Black Label is passionate about showcasing the most amazing artists in the industry. Two more books that feature eye-popping art were also year-end hits in the direct market: the outstanding Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child, written by Frank Miller and illustrated by Rafael Grampa, and the stunning Wonder Woman: Dead Earth, written and illustrated by the monstrously talented Daniel Warren Johnson. Then, New York Times bestselling writer Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok team up for the long-awaited Batman: Three Jokers. 30 years after The Killing Joke changed comics forever, this story re-examines the myth of the Joker and explores the depths of his ongoing battle with Batman.
