Dr. Santos is a licensed clinical psychologist and board-certified behavior analyst. She is the owner of “Assessment, Consultation & Treatment”, with offices in Pasadena and Arcadia, where she leads a staff of more than 60 in the provision of therapeutic services to children and families in the San Gabriel Valley. Dr. Santos shared with us that every day for her is a new adventure as her work with children often takes her into our schools where she does a significant amount of consulting. Dr. Santos explained that she often conducts a personality test as one of the What did you learn about yourself? first steps in a patient evaluation. As we all know, the best way to learn is by doing, so she administered a personality test to our club members in attendance. The exercise was for each of us to draw a person, a house, and a tree, and we were given several minutes to create our masterpieces. She shared some general examples of characteristics she may focus on to gain insight into her patient, including: President David’s Words of Wisdom… and more! “The most difficult thing is the ● Use of space – are the objects large or small on the page? decision to act. The rest is merely ● Where are the objects placed on the page? tenacity.” Amelia Earhart. ● Are the lines heavy or light? She did not offer an interpretation so I will leave that to you! An interesting talk and fun exercise, thank you Dr. Santos! FROM UNDER THE SHADE SIXTY FIVE: A Milestone By President David Smith This has been an illuminating birthday. Five years ago I started wishing time away. It was unlike me and I wasn’t happy myself for it. My philosophy is: life is important and to be cherished. Every day, rain or shine, is God sent and to be enjoyed. Part of me was going completely against my grain. The main reason was our medical insurance cost more than double. Between the Affordable Care Act and changes with my wife’s company insurance provider we found ourselves struggling at times. At sixty five I qualified for Medicare and Elsa A special thank you to Mark, Sarah and I can now breathe easier. and all of you for a fun day! The illumination is the effort that my family and all of you put into celebrating my anniversary. The happy hour at El Patron was more Rotary fun than we’ve had in some time. I’m still chuckling over Mike Zoeller saying how he’d like to be sixty five again. It got even funnier later when I realized, at sixty five, I was the second oldest person there. Even though the inevitability of aging at times gives me pause, because of you, I’m happy and I feel loved. Who is Dusty Springfield? Huntington Hospital has temporarily A woman of conviction and principle moved its community Blood Donor Center By President David Smith (due to COVID-19) to 800 S. Fairmount Ave, Ground Floor, Main Lobby. The parking entrance is off of Bellefontaine Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien (16 April 1939 – 2 March 1999), Street and parking will be validated. For professionally known as Dusty Springfield, was a British pop singer and record more info or to schedule an appointment, producer whose career extended from the late 1950s to the 1990s. With her please call (626) 397-5422. distinctive mezzo-soprano sound, she was an important singer of blue-eyed soul and at her peak was one of the most successful British female performers, with six top 20 singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 and sixteen on the UK Singles Chart from 1963 to 1989. She is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and UK Music Hall of Fame. International polls have named Springfield among the best female rock artists of all time. Her image, supported by a peroxide blonde bouffant hairstyle, evening gowns, and heavy make-up, as well as her flamboyant performances, made her an icon of the Swinging Sixties. Born in West Hampstead in London to a family that enjoyed music, Springfield learned to sing at home. In 1958 she joined her first professional group, The Lana Sisters, and two years later formed a pop-folk vocal trio, The Springfield’s, with her brother Tom Springfield, and Tim Field. They became the UK's top selling act. Her solo career began in 1963 with the upbeat pop hit "I Only Want to Be with You". Among the hits that followed were "Wishin' and Hopin' " (1964), "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" (1964), "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" (1966), and "Son of a Preacher Man" (1968). Springfield brought many little-known soul singers to the attention of a wider UK record-buying audience by hosting the first national TV performance of many top-selling Motown artists beginning in 1965. Partly owing to these efforts, a year later she became the best-selling female singer in the world and topped a number of popularity polls, including Melody Maker's Best International Vocalist. Although she was never considered a Northern Soul artist in her own right, her efforts contributed a great deal to the formation of the genre as a result. She was the first UK singer to top the New Musical Express readers' poll for Female Singer. What I find most intriguing about her is her experience in South Africa. In 1964 Dusty Springfield embarked on a tour of South Africa. Unlike a lot of other artists who went there, she put a clause in her contract that stipulated she would only play to non-segregated audiences. She and her band had just two shows under their belts when their passports were seized at a hotel in Capetown. For three days they weren't allowed access to phones and were questioned by authorities who eventually told them they could only finish the tour if they respected apartheid regulations. Dusty refused and was forced out of the country. She donated all the money she made to Black South African charities. This was nearly 20 years before the anti-apartheid cause became trendy among celebrities. Clearly apartheid had to go and I admire Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien for standing her ground. She passed away March 2nd, 1999 from breast cancer. ______________________________________________________________ By Sonia Kwon: The Altadena Rotary Club Microfinance Committee is happy to announce we've just received our first In next week’s Sparks: more about partial repayments on loans given to these entrepreneurs: Altadena Rotary Club members reading to kids! 17% REPAID!
