The band, formally called the Quarrymen orthe Sliver Beatles is formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Gorge Harrison and Ringo Starr. Lennon and McCartney who first performed together in Liverpool in 1957, were the ones who started forming the band. The group got bigger because of a shared enthusiasm for American rock and roll. Lennon, a guitarist and singer and McCartney a bassist and singer have mostly self taught themselves and became such musicians. The band later added a drummer, Pete Best and joined a small but booming “beat music” scene, first in Liverpool and then during small visits between 1960 and 1962 in Hamburg. In 1964, the Beatles were at the top of the charts in the UK, but only recently did they start to attract audiences overseas with songs from their first two albums, “Please Please Me” and “With the Beatles”. Radio airplay and a broad marketing campaign in the U.S. quickly drove huge record sales and enormous enthusiasm among new fans. The band set off on a series of toursin 1964, starting in Europe, and visiting United States, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. The fans of the band were extremely excited and determined to see the band that the police sometimes resorted to using fire hoses to hold them back. Similarly, the Beatles started many trends and techniques which are still being used by musicians today. 2 The Rolling Stones Of the many popular bands of the 1960’s, Rolling Stones is one of the most well-known bands of the time. They formed in London, United States during 1962. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards met at Dartford Maypole County Primary School. A couple of years later, they became fans of blues and American RandB, and also shared a mutual friend, Dick Taylor. Richards soon joined a group and and got expelled for truancy. On the other side of town Cheltenham’s Brian Jones began a career in truancy to practice the sax. By the time Jones had reached sixteen, the future stone fathered two illegitimate children and skipped town to Scandinavia, where he began practicing the guitar. Jones eventually moved to London where he spent time with Alexis Korner’s Blues, Inc., and then made the move to start up his own band. While working for the Ealing Blues Club with a loose version of Blues, Inc. and drummer Charlie Watts, Jones began jamming with Jagger and Richards on the side. jagger would front the new band. Jones, Jagger, Richards and the 2 drummer Tony Chapman cut a demo tape which was rejected by the EMI. Chapman left the band shortly after to attend arts collage, and by thistimethe blues Inc had changed their name to the Rolling Stones. Their first show was on July 12, 1962 at Marquee. In June 1963, the Stones released their first single, a Chuck Berry tune, “Come On”.
