ARTISTS ACROSS the DECADES the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Coldplay ARTISTS ACROSS THE DECADES The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, ColdPlay P. S. Priya Shukla 9th December 2018 Abstract For the following website, I researched about three bands: 1. The Beatles 2. The Rolling Stones 3. Coldplay Through the research, I was able to understand how the bands were formed, how they became popular and how they impacted the society and/or the music industry. The following documentation allows the reader a better understanding about these bands. It includes a brief back story of how each band formed, outlines their most popular songs and also talks about their impact. Contents Contents i List of Figures ii 1 The Beatles 1 2 The Rolling Stones 2 2.1 .................................... 4 3 Coldplay 4 3.1 .................................... 6 i List of Figures ii 1 The Beatles The Beatles are a famous English rock band who got together in Liverpool, England during the 1960s. The band, formally called the Quarrymen orthe Sliver Beatles is formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Gorge Harrison and Ringo Starr. Lennon and McCartney who first performed together in Liverpool in 1957, were the ones who started forming the band. The group got bigger because of a shared enthusiasm for American rock and roll. Lennon, a guitarist and singer and McCartney a bassist and singer have mostly self taught themselves and became such musicians. The band later added a drummer, Pete Best and joined a small but booming “beat music” scene, first in Liverpool and then during small visits between 1960 and 1962 in Hamburg. In 1964, the Beatles were at the top of the charts in the UK, but only recently did they start to attract audiences overseas with songs from their first two albums, “Please Please Me” and “With the Beatles”. Radio airplay and a broad marketing campaign in the U.S. quickly drove huge record sales and enormous enthusiasm among new fans. The band set off on a series of toursin 1964, starting in Europe, and visiting United States, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. The fans of the band were extremely excited and determined to see the band that the police sometimes resorted to using fire hoses to hold them back. They had their first televised concert in the U.S and wasontheEd Sullivan Show, on February 9, 1964. there were about 73 Million people who viewed their performance. some of her famous songs are: • Hey Jude • Yesterday • Here Comes The Sun. • Penny Lane • Eleanor Rigby • I Want To Hold Your Hand 1 2. The Rolling Stones • Come Together • A Day In The Life • Something • Blackbird • Don’t Let Me down The Beatles have been a great influence on the music industry. Theyarethe most famous celebrity of their day and also the most successful songwriters of their age and the most creative single force to ever hit popular music. They have set musical trends that are still being followed. The band never stoped experimenting and stretching the boundaries of pop music. They have various creative achievements which would take forever to list but some examples are “I Feel Fine”, “I Want You”, “Eleanor Rigby”, etc. The Beatles were the first to release a single which featured feedback, which eventually became very popular. Similarly, the Beatles started many trends and techniques which are still being used by musicians today. 2 The Rolling Stones Of the many popular bands of the 1960’s, Rolling Stones is one of the most well-known bands of the time. They formed in London, United States during 1962. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards met at Dartford Maypole County Primary School. A couple of years later, they became fans of blues and American RandB, and also shared a mutual friend, Dick Taylor. Richards soon joined a group and and got expelled for truancy. On the other side of town Cheltenham’s Brian Jones began a career in truancy to practice the sax. By the time Jones had reached sixteen, the future stone fathered two illegitimate children and skipped town to Scandinavia, where he began practicing the guitar. Jones eventually moved to London where he spent time with Alexis Korner’s Blues, Inc., and then made the move to start up his own band. While working for the Ealing Blues Club with a loose version of Blues, Inc. and drummer Charlie Watts, Jones began jamming with Jagger and Richards on the side. jagger would front the new band. Jones, Jagger, Richards and the 2 drummer Tony Chapman cut a demo tape which was rejected by the EMI. Chapman left the band shortly after to attend arts collage, and by thistimethe blues Inc had changed their name to the Rolling Stones. Their first show was on July 12, 1962 at Marquee. In June 1963, the Stones released their first single, a Chuck Berry tune, “Come On”. They performed on a British TV show “Thank Your Lucky Stars,”in which the producer asked Oldham to get rid of “that vile-looking singer with the tire-tread lips.” The single they performed successfully reached number 21 on the British Charts. After the band being able to prove themselves witha series of chart topping hits, Jagger and Richards began writing their own songs. “Tell Me (You’re Coming Back)” was the bands first U.S top forty hit. In January 1965, the Stones broke another number one in the U.K. with “The Last Time” and broke the top 10 in the U.S. with the same tune. Their most famous single is “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” which held number one position for four weeks. The band released their first all -original album in 1966. Theyhad a dull reaction from the audience partly cause of the Beatles and their release, “Revolver” and Bob Dylan’s “Blonde on Blonde” – a good year for rock and roll. Though, in the following year they were back in the limelight with their next performance “Let’s Spend The Night Together” on the “Ed Sullivan Show.” On June 9, 1969, Brian Jones announced he was leaving the band. With in a week, he was replaced by Mick Taylor (ex-John Mayall guitarist). Jones wanted to start his own band, though his plans were cut short when he was found dead on July 3, 1969 in his swimming pool. As if this wasn’t bad enough for the group, A young black fan, Merideth Hunter, had been killed by the members of Hell’s Angels motor cycle gang. The gang was hired by the band as it was advised by the Grateful Dead as security for the event. some of her famous songs are: • Satisfaction • Angie • Paint It Black • Gimme Shelter 3 3. Coldplay • Sympathy For The Devil • Wild Horses • Jumpin’ Jack Flash • Start Me Up • Miss You • Brown Sugar • Beast Of Burden 2.1 The rolling Stones have released twenty-nine albums ,eighteen live albums, numerous videos, concert films and compilations in their fifty years. Theband was inducted in the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. The band itself has been a great influence to themusic industry. They have been well-known for their energetic performances and their wild reputations off stage. At first, the band received attention fortheir appearance, for example long hair rather then their music, though they later started receiving attention for blending blues and rock in their own signature sound. The band was heavily influenced by the blues, though theyalso blended other genres into their own sound. Their songs used a variety of styles, such as country, folk, etc. Their music style has been a great influence in the industry. 3 Coldplay Coldplay is one of the biggest bands known which was originated in London. The artists in Coldplay met and became friends while living in thesame residence at university college of London in mid-1990s. The lead singer, Chris Martin became friends with the lead guitarist Jonny Buckland. later they were joined by group’s bassist, Guy Berryman and then Will Champion joined shortly after the group had formed. they formed a band which was originally named starfish though it was later changed to Coldplay as some of thepeople 4 playing in the band refused to call themselves Starfish. The name Coldplay comes from a poetry book called Childs Reflections. All the members of the Band are equally passionate for Music, in fact, Martin wanted to pursue music and be part of a band since the age of 11. His goal at university was to find members for the band rather than actually study his major. Three of the four members spent completed university, the fourth one, Berryman dropped out midway. Most of their free time was spent writing and rehearsing Music that they would perform. like any other band, they have also released a lot of music, some being very important to the band, ones that made them popular. some of their songs are: • something just like this • The Scientist • Yellow • Shiver • Paradise • Hymn For The Weekend • Fix You • Viva La Vida • A Sky Full Of Stars • Clocks • Adventures Of A Lifetime • In My Place • Ever Glow • Magic 5 3. Coldplay and there are many more songs that they have released. In March, 2000, they released the Shiver, the first single from Parachutes, and it lead them to number thirty five on Englands music charts, but it wasn’t until their second single from Parachutes, Yellow which was released in June of 2000 that they became highly popular and became a genuine hit in both England and United States. The album was number 12 on the charts and sold 2.4 million copiesin Britain alone.

  • Ideal Homes? Social Change and Domestic Life
IDEAL HOMES? Until now, the ‘home’ as a space within which domestic lives are lived out has been largely ignored by sociologists. Yet the ‘home’ as idea, place and object consumes a large proportion of individuals’ incomes, and occupies their dreams and their leisure time while the absence of a physical home presents a major threat to both society and the homeless themselves. This edited collection provides for the first time an analysis of the space of the ‘home’ and the experiences of home life by writers from a wide range of disciplines, including sociology, criminology, psychology, social policy and anthropology. It covers a range of subjects, including gender roles, different generations’ relationships to home, the changing nature of the family, transition, risk and alternative visions of home. Ideal Homes? provides a fascinating analysis which reveals how both popular images and experiences of home life can produce vital clues as to how society’s members produce and respond to social change. • Rock and Popular Music 1960
Rock and Popular Music 1960 - 2000 Cultural and Historic Background Information Rock music is a broad genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll" in the United States in the early 1950s and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly in the United States and the United Kingdom. It originates from 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, a style which drew heavily from the genres of blues, rhythm and blues, and from country music. Rock music also drew strongly from several other genres such as electric blues and folk, and incorporated influences from jazz, classical and other musical styles. Musically, rock has centered on the electric guitar, usually as part of a rock group with electric bass, drums, and one or more singers. Usually, rock is song-based music with a 4/4 time signature using a verse–chorus form, but the genre has become extremely diverse. Like pop music, lyrics often stress romantic love but also address a wide variety of other themes that are frequently social or political. At the beginning of the 1960s, pop and rock and roll trends of the 1950s continued; nevertheless, the rock and roll of the decade before started to merge into a more international, eclectic variant. In the early 1960s, rock and roll in its purest form was gradually overtaken by pop rock, psychedelic rock, blues rock, and folk rock, which had grown in popularity. The country and folk influenced style associated with the latter half of 1960s rock music spawned a generation of popular singer songwriters who wrote and performed their own work.

The British Invasion: Finding Traction in America by Piacentino Vona A thesis presented to the University Of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in History Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2018 © Piacentino Vona 2018 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract As a period of American History, the 1960s has provided historians and academics with a wealth of material for research and scholarship. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, the hippie era, and the Civil Rights Movement, among other topics have received thorough historical discussion and debate. Music was another key aspect in understanding the social history of the 1960s. But unlike the people and events mentioned above, historians have devoted less attention to music in the historical landscape. The British Invasion was one such key event that impacted America in the 1960s. Bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who found their way into the United States and majorly impacted American society. Using secondary sources, newspaper articles, interviews and documentaries on these bands, this thesis explores the British Invasion and its influence in the context of 1960s America. This thesis explores multiple bands that came in the initial wave. It follows these bands from 1964-1969, and argues that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who shared common multiple factors that allowed them to attain the traction to succeed and to maintain that success in the United States.
