Since then, it’s been picked Zola’s Thérèse Raquin on Broadway. the strength to tell their stories without up for release in the US this September and the being drowned out by men’s voices, the UK by next year. In an interview with Variety Magazine, Knightley life of twentieth-century French novelist said that having done a lot of period films like Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette—who went on The Duchess or Anna Karenina, she felt guilty to earn a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948— BRINGING WOMEN’S STORIES TO LIFE about it for years, “like it was something that I should serve as an inspiration for us women. should try to shake off.” The selection of Knightley to play Colette is IFortunately for us, someone has turned the story appropriate. The actor’s repertoire of films has “Then I realized that these were the films I’ve of Colette, as she’s better known, into a period ranged from Guinevere in King Arthur to Pride always loved watching. I think some people find film starring Keira Knightley and supported and Prejudice’s Elizabeth Bennet. Of course, escapism through science fiction or fantasy, by Dominic West, Denise Gough, Eleanor she’s quite well-known as Elizabeth Swann and I suppose my escapism into another world Tomlinson, Fiona Shaw, and Aiysha Hart. in Disney Film’s the Pirates of the Caribbean has always been through period drama. It’s nice movie series, but she also recently played Anna that in my 30s I can finally admit that,” she said. Colette—directed by Wash Westmoreland Karenina in a movie with the same name. and written by Wash Westmoreland, Rebecca Asked why she wanted to do Colette, another Lenkiewicz, and the late Richard Glatzer—had She’s also done stints on stage, from Lillian period piece, she said in the same interview: “It’s wonderful to play inspiring women and to get their stories and their voices out there. Within her writing, Colette was questioning the idea of gender and the idea of what was naturally feminine as opposed to society’s take on being feminine.”

Knightley’s response isn’t surprising as she brings a lot of women’s stories to life with her roles—regardless of whether these women are inspiring or not. These include period films like Bennet, Karenina, and even Lady Georgiana (in The Duchess), to modern takes like soccer- loving Jules Paxton (in Bend It Like Beckham) and the gun-toting Domino Harvey (in Domino).

THE KISS THAT STARTED A RIOT

The French writer Colette is also known for bringing women’s stories to life, though a lot of it were semi- or quasi-autobiographical, given that these stories were based on her experience or perspective.

Born on January 28, 1873 in the village of Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye in Yonne, Burgundy, Colette—or her full name, Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette—was the daughter of Jules-Joseph Colette and Adèle Eugénie Sidonie, or better known as Sido.

She married critic and writer Henry Gauthier- Villars (also known as “Willy”) in 1893, a man who was fourteen years older than her. Henry was also a notorious libertine in Paris who pushed Colette to start her own sexual affairs with both men and women.

Called by some a con artist, Henry also didn’t write any of the material attributed to him though he was willing to take credit for the work. Initially, he took the recognition for Colette’s popular novels and when she wanted to take ownership of her work, Henry refused.

Colette separated from Henry in 1906, but because she had no access to her earnings of the Claudine books, she had to earn her keep. She also had a lot of relationships with women during period, the most famous being with Mathilde de Morny, Marquise de Belbeuf (known as “Missy”). One time, she shared an onstage kiss with Mathilde at the Moulin Rouge that almost caused the audience to riot. She married , the editor of the French newspaper Le Matin, in 1912, and they had a daughter Colette de Jouvenel in 1913. However, this marriage ended in a divorce in 1924 because of Jouvenel’s infidelities and Colette’s own affair with her sixteen-year-old stepson, . She went on to marry Maurice Goudeket, who was sixteen years younger than her.

Through this period, she wrote some of her best works like Cheri and , and she was acclaimed as Frances’ greatest woman writer. She died on August 3, 1954 and—while she was refused a religious funeral because of her divorces—she was given a state funeral.

A PERIOD FILM OF A PAINTING

The film Colette only covers that phase of the writer’s life when she had discovered herself in the fin de siècle bohemian scene in Paris.

Defiant and gorgeous, Knightley plays Colette with her usual aplomb, whether as the wide- eyed young bride to Henry (the always smirking West) or the sharp and whip-smart writer who takes the Paris salons by storm and wants the recognition due to her talents.

In this adaption of Colette’s life, the movie begins with Knightley as the “awakening” Colette. The pacing then moves quickly, shifting to the seething war between Colette wanting to break free and Henry wanting to keep his money- maker under this thumb.

The dialogue between the two certainly crackles, especially as Colette keeps catching Henry with his infidelities. While it’s hard to find any empathy for Henry, West adds the right touch of weaknesses so that the character appears human rather than outright dastardly.

To get even with Henry, she takes up with women lovers, including the androgynous aristocrat Mathilde (Gough) who dresses like a man. Moreover, this film doesn’t stint on Colette’s love for other women as well, showing her affair with Georgie Raoul-Duval (Tomlinson), the American socialite from Louisiana.

The other main character in this movie is the gorgeous Parisian settings, as the cast sweep in and out of the many scenes in the City of Lights. It’s like watching one of those Parisian Impressionist paintings come to life before you. With costumed films like these, it’s always a treat for the eyes when you watch them.

COLETTE AT THE VANGUARD

Knightley’s excellent portrayal of Colette shines a spotlight on this great French writer. But it’s really Colette’s story that makes us sit up and watch this movie intently: after all, it’s a story of how a woman had to stand up and make her voice—and talent—heard.

While it makes us depressed thinking that whether during Colette’s period or ours, we’re still struggling in a world that doesn’t believe in the excellence of women and prefers the mediocrity of men, we’re glad to know that even back then, we had women like Colette at our backs.

And if there were social media platforms back then, we’re sure that Colette would be at the forefront leading her sisters with hashtags like #MeToo and #TimesUp as well. TOP

LN: The short is successfully traveling the film festival circuit with a slew of festivals already secured including Barcelona and Italy. How do you think the international audience will receive the film? What is the universal message that seems to connect (pun intended) audiences around the world? LB: I think that continuously creating and sharing LGBTQ content is so important in the US AND also internationally. I have spent a lot of time in Italy and there is definitely not as much of a gay community or overall tolerance/understanding as there is in the US (Or at least most parts of the US). I was especially excited to be a part of the Florence Queer Film Fest for this reason! And also because I now have a good excuse to go back to Italy! But really, I think the more relatable LGBTQ content that is available to people, the more others in the closet or feel shame will realize that they are far from alone. I really hope all of the Euro lezzies will dig the film!

LN: You made a big splash a year ago as the first lesbian contestant on Andy Cohen’s Love Connection. What’s the biggest lesson you learned from it? LB: The biggest lesson was that I am only one person and one type of lesbian - I cannot come close to representing an entire community of LGBTQ women. But, that’s ok! I learned to be proud of being vulnerable and sharing my story because it matters. All of our stories matter.

LN: And btw, have you now found your love connection? LB: Yes! I am in a relationship now and have never been happier. Turns out, I didn’t need to go on National Television to find Love. :)

LN: What’s next for Liz? LB: Getting back into some blogging and YouTubing but mostly just living my life as a dog/cat mom, selling medical devices, lifting heavy weights, eating delicious food, spending time with my GF, and traveling the world. I am not working on a film or a big creative project at the moment! But, I love meeting new people, traveling, and trying new experiences and it always seems to lead me to the next project or experience. I am confident that the universe will deliver something into my lap at some point in the near future. Stay tuned.

Where can our readers watch “Female Connection”? LB: You will be able to view “Female Connection” exclusively on the AfterEllen website in early September. After that, I will make it available to be viewed on my YouTube channel. Follow me on IG (@LizBinLA) for exact dates.

Anything else you want to add? LB: Share! Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and share your story in any format that you want. In person, on social media, etc. You never know whose life you might impact.

CLEXACON IS COMING TO LONDON Queer women’s stories and voices on the big and small screen front and center By Michel Khordoc

lexaCon, the largest multi-fandom event for LGBTQ women & allies, is going across the pond this Fall for the first time ever kicking off ClexaCon London.

Building from the massive success of ClexaCon, Cwhich has taken place in Las Vegas, NV for the past two years, the European edition will bring together in London the best in queer television, movies, books, blogs and more.

The highly anticipated pop-up event will take place at the Novotel London West ( International Ctre,1 Shortlands, Hammersmith, London W6 8DR) November 3-4, 2018. The London chapter, while a smaller, more intimate version of the main event held annually in Las Vegas that hosts 4,000+ LGBTQ women and allies, represents a key geographical expansion for the iconic Con. Focusing on a more curated experience for its European attendees, ClexaCon London is committed to raising awareness about the differences in creative spaces and support for LGBTQ women in the UK in comparison to the US to inspire more LGBTQ women to create more content.

LGBTQ+ representation matters now more than ever. While there seems to be an overwhelming move towards diversity with LGBTQ-centric narratives and characters popping up in movies these past few years, still major studios are remaining behind when it comes to fully embrace a culture of inclusion.

In fact, GLAADS’s annual Studio Responsibility Index (SRI) recently noted a drop in the representation of LGBTQ people in films in the past year. ClexaCon Directors Danielle, Ashley, Heidi, and Holly

The Nā Pali Coast State Park is assessable to hikers along the Kalalau Trail.

Travelers can experience Napali on foot, from the water or from the air. You can see Napali from Kokee State Park, which overlooks into Kalalau Valley. There are many tour companies that offer Napali sightseeing, sailing, snorkeling, and airplane/helicopter tours. Whichever you choose, you will be truly amazed by this wondrous coastline.

POLIHALE BEACH AND STATE PARK Polihale is the longest beach in the state of Hawaii with 17 miles of white sand and dunes. It is accessible by foot through a 5-mile unpaved Napali Coast old cane haul road. It is advisable to check weather conditions before going because the road can sometimes flood during heavy rain.

Polihale Beach Because of its length and access point, Polihale Beach is rarely crowded.

Polihale Beach has some facilities and camping is by permit only. Strong currents and no lifeguard make it is a notoriously dangerous beach for swimming. But if you want to enjoy gazing at the edge of Napali’s cliffs or marvel at the remarkable sunsets over the Forbidden Island of Niihau on perpetual shores that’s all to yourself, Polihale Beach is the perfect spot for you. If you like beach-combing and shelling fun, the endless stretch of Polihale sand will delight you.

KE’E BEACH Many travelers fall in love with Ke’e Beach Ke’e Beach because of its stunning north shore location. Ke’e Beach (pronounced Keh-AY) is conveniently located at the Kalalau trailhead and is the easiest beach to access for prime Napali views. Because of this, you can expect some traffic in this area, especially when it’s full of hikers setting out on the Kalalau trail.

Unlike Polihale Beach, Ke’e is protected by a reef that makes it a safe to swim and snorkel during summer. There are lifeguards posted here and available restrooms and showers. A great time to go here is at sunset. Not only are the hikers gone by then, but also the sunset here is extra spectacular. Thanks to the Napali Cliffs. WAILUA RIVER STATE PARK The only navigable river in Hawaii is situated in Wailua River State Park, making it the favorite spot of travelers who wants a majestic view of lush valley and rainforests on a boat tour.

The park includes Opaekaa Falls and Wailua Falls as two of its most notable natural attractions. The water of Opaekaa Falls glides down a jagged cliffside, and the source and end of the falls can’t be seen, veiled by jungle vegetation. Meanwhile, the rocky terrain of the river above Wailua Falls forms two separate streams that create two waterfalls in one spot.

Wailua River State Park is also known for its historical significance, considered sacred and housing several temples and royal sites. If you have time, stop at the Wailua Complex of Heiau, a National Historic Landmark that Wailua River State Park displays remnants of this era, including ruins, ancient birthing stones, and stone carvings with petroglyphs. WORDS ON A PLATE By Reba Birmingham

These words are slipped through bars We Care These words writ down on cards We Dare These words disintegrate These words upon a plate Served to children here Served to those in fear To Make A Country Great.

Medals pinned on chests But wait He Wants a But wait military parade But wait He Wants But wait Tanks and missiles all for show These words While hopes and memories fade These words Upon a plate “I don’t really care do you?” One fell from heaven Her Words In the mouth of a dove Her choice was not a chance And broke the plate Her Words That word was Love Like Asma Al-Assad They’re a perfect pair It needed no permission To paraphrase a tweet, it’s #sad To slip through cages It changed men’s hearts And where are the so-called Christians? It lifted wages Whose words manipulate It toppled an insane regime History/Bible Exegesis And put a bridge across the mote These words upon a plate It got the 46 percent A message that was hope To go to local booths and vote Has twisted to a chant God can’t hear you if you’re gay It saved the world Or “Illegal” immigrant This word of Love You know deep down That this is true So march and vote and do your thing The arms of God belong to you.
