Ideal Homes? Social Change and Domestic Life
IDEAL HOMES? Until now, the ‘home’ as a space within which domestic lives are lived out has been largely ignored by sociologists. Yet the ‘home’ as idea, place and object consumes a large proportion of individuals’ incomes, and occupies their dreams and their leisure time while the absence of a physical home presents a major threat to both society and the homeless themselves. This edited collection provides for the first time an analysis of the space of the ‘home’ and the experiences of home life by writers from a wide range of disciplines, including sociology, criminology, psychology, social policy and anthropology. It covers a range of subjects, including gender roles, different generations’ relationships to home, the changing nature of the family, transition, risk and alternative visions of home. Ideal Homes? provides a fascinating analysis which reveals how both popular images and experiences of home life can produce vital clues as to how society’s members produce and respond to social change. Giving America Back the Blues
GIVING AMERICA BACK THE BLUES OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION How did the early Rolling Stones help popularize the Blues? OVERVIEW The Rolling Stones ultimately made their mark as the nonconformist outlaws of Rock and Roll. But before they were bad boys, the Stones were missionaries of the Blues. The young Rolling Stones — Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, and Bill Wyman — were white kids who hailed from working- and middle-class Britain and set out to play American music, primarily that of African Americans with roots in the South. In so doing, they helped bring this music to a new, largely white audience, both in Britain and the United States. The young men who formed the Rolling Stones emerged from the club scene fostered by British Blues pioneers Cyril Davies and Alexis Korner. These two men and their band, Blues Incorporated, helped popularize the American Blues, whose raw intensity resonated with a generation of Britons who had grown up in the shadow of war, death, the Blitz, postwar rationing, and the hardening of the Cold War standoff. Much of the Stones’ early work consisted of faithful covers of American Blues artists that Davies, Korner, and the Stones venerated: Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Slim Harpo, Jimmy Reed. The early Stones in particular helped make the Blues wildly popular among young Britons. As the Stones’ fame grew and they became part of the mid-1960s British “invasion” of America, they also reintroduced the Blues to American listeners, most notably young, white audiences with limited exposure to the music. But almost from day one, the Stones were more than a Blues cover band. -

ARTISTS ACROSS the DECADES the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Coldplay
ARTISTS ACROSS THE DECADES The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, ColdPlay P. S. Priya Shukla 9th December 2018 Abstract For the following website, I researched about three bands: 1. The Beatles 2. The Rolling Stones 3. Coldplay Through the research, I was able to understand how the bands were formed, how they became popular and how they impacted the society and/or the music industry. The following documentation allows the reader a better understanding about these bands. It includes a brief back story of how each band formed, outlines their most popular songs and also talks about their impact. Contents Contents i List of Figures ii 1 The Beatles 1 2 The Rolling Stones 2 2.1 .................................... 4 3 Coldplay 4 3.1 .................................... 6 i List of Figures ii 1 The Beatles The Beatles are a famous English rock band who got together in Liverpool, England during the 1960s. The band, formally called the Quarrymen orthe Sliver Beatles is formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Gorge Harrison and Ringo Starr. Lennon and McCartney who first performed together in Liverpool in 1957, were the ones who started forming the band. The group got bigger because of a shared enthusiasm for American rock and roll. Lennon, a guitarist and singer and McCartney a bassist and singer have mostly self taught themselves and became such musicians. The band later added a drummer, Pete Best and joined a small but booming “beat music” scene, first in Liverpool and then during small visits between 1960 and 1962 in Hamburg. In 1964, the Beatles were at the top of the charts in the UK, but only recently did they start to attract audiences overseas with songs from their first two albums, “Please Please Me” and “With the Beatles”. -

We have had lots of compliments from visitors about the new Information Barn displays, but these tend to come from first‐time visitors and returning visitors have said they regret the loss of the tree and stuffed animals. We will, over the autumn and winter be further ‘personalising’ the displays – such as dressing the area around the deer with branches and bringing the birds down from the beams so they can be easily seen. -

'Imagine There's No Heaven': John Lennon, Atheism and the Possibility of Public Theology
‘IMAGINE THERE’S NO HEAVEN’: JOHN LENNON, ATHEISM AND THE POSSIBILITY OF PUBLIC THEOLOGY Since the advent of global communication there have been a number of events which have metaphorically „stopped the world‟. Unexpected, sudden, shocking, perhaps outrageous, they have had the effect, not only of preoccupying news editors and opinion formers for months and even years thereafter, but of momentarily disorientating all of us as onlookers, of giving us a sense that the world has shifted a little on its axis and will never be quite the same again. Whether of natural or human causation, these are the events which, according to the cliché, we never forget where we were when we first heard of them. In recent times we would include 9/11 and the Boxing Day tsunami; in the slightly more distant past, the death of Princess Diana; and in the experience of those of more mature years, the death of Elvis Presley, the Warsaw Pact invasion of Prague and, most famously of all, the assassination of President John F Kennedy. And into this category, I suggest, would also come the shooting of John Lennon, 30 years ago this coming December. Lennon‟s death impacted upon us, not simply because it was so „out of the blue‟, so senseless, so brazen, but because it removed in an instant a person who had seemed, both in his heyday with the Beatles and subsequently as an activist, peace campaigner and independent musician, to personify the hopes which many entertained in the 1960s and early 1970s of an end to costly and futile conflicts like Vietnam, and the possibility of a new social order. -
