Summer is sizzling, and so is Lifestyle’s monthly list of what’s trending in South Florida. Read on—and enjoy the burn.

BY ROBIN HODES

Get in the Spirit: Thanks to Old School Hospitality partners Paul Flanigan, and Frank and Kimberly Zaffere, Fort Lauderdale’s Victoria Park has the kind of retro- hip neighborhood hangout that can send spirits soaring for a variety of reasons. The vibe at Good Spirits Fifth & Fed (476 N. Federal Highway) is crooner-cool, the kind of place Frank and Dean would have appreciated; the lounge area is festive, serving more than 300 wines from around the world, not mention craft beers and classic cocktails. And the casual American fare, courtesy of executive chefs Chang “Sushi Mike” Jin and Joseph Parsons, is inspired—like the not-to-be-missed So-Flo scallops (with honey- lime mint slaw and avocado relish) and crab Louie (with monster chunks of lump crab). Check out goodspiritsrestaurant.com for the full menu.

LMGFL.COM | JULY 2018 57 BarTalk fresh approach DEATH OR GLORY RAISES THE STANDARDS OF DELRAY’S BAR SCENE o the famous punk rock band , T“death or glory” was “just another story.” But to the four owners of Delray Beach bar Death or Glory, the phrase refl ects their commitment to giving the community a place to, as they put it, “Eat. Drink. Chill.” “Ultimately, ‘death or glory’ really means ‘go big or go home,’” says Annie Blake, one of the owners. “We thought, ‘We’re going to make this work. Shake things up a litte. Show Delray something a little bit new and fresh.’ ” With this gung-ho spirit, the partners—Blake, Ayme Harrison, Isaac Grillo, April DeVona— combined their experiences in the cocktail industry to transform the nearly century-old Falcon House (116 NE Sixth Ave.) into a neighborhood spot that offers an elevated yet approachable and relaxing cocktail experience. The key to elevation is the dedication to freshness. Ingredients—orgeat syrups for the mai tais, coconut creams for piña coladas—are made in-house. Garnishes are garden-grown, and the rotating menu of seasonal cocktails and food relies on fare from local producers. “Nothing’s coming out of a gun,” Blake says. The results are balanced approaches to classics such as the old fashioned and negroni. A menu mainstay is the Rose Tattoo, with vodka, cucumber, lemon juice and rosewater mist topped with prosecco. Refl ecting the relaxed atmosphere is another drink, Party Like It’s 1999, with vodka, pomegranate, grapefruit and more, served in a disco ball that can be shared—there’s enough for four to eight people. And for those looking to get away, the tiki bar at the back of the house is a perfect escape. There, the drinks maintain the whimsy of tiki culture but depart from the bad reputation Blake says tiki drinks have gained for being “overly sweet.” “Like a lot of cocktails, to execute them ROSE TATTOO properly, the balance is really important,” Blake Inredients says. “You can’t just throw a bunch of sugar and 1 1/2 ounces Reyka vodka spirits into a vessel and be like, ‘perfect.’ ” 3/4 ounce lemon juice This balance, combined with the owners’ 3/4 ounce simple syrup dedication to serving customers that Blake 1/2 ounce cucumber juice says expect more from their dining experience, regularly draws a mixed crowd, ranging in age Directions from 21 to 90. That’s a testament to the bar’s Shake ingredients in tin with ice. wide appeal since it opened in April 2017. Strain into fl ute. Add cucumber As for those still intimidated by the name? ribbon. he server at Beach House Pompano (270 N. Pompano Beach Blvd.) leaves the dining check tucked inside the pages of a page of hardcover T copy of Gulliver’s Travels. You could get yours among the pages of Moby Dick or The Old Man and the Sea. It’s one of the deliberate touches to make guests feel as if they are spending time at a friend’s cozy beach retreat. “We didn’t expect it, but visitors have started leaving notes in the books, commenting on the food, recommending a menu favorite, or leaving their mark by announcing where they are visiting from,” says Andy Fox, director of operations for Brimstone Restaurant Group, owners of Beach House. Built on a prime piece of property directly on the sand, Beach House is the fi rst restaurant to open as part of Pompano Beach Fishing Village, a six-acre beachside redevelopment. The 12,000-square-foot casual restaurant had its grand opening in April, after 2½ years of development and $6 million in new construction. It’s one of two anchor restaurants for the new Fishing Village. The Beach House idea was created by Cincinnati-based Jeffrey R. Anderson Real Estate as part of its restaurant group and an extension of its Brimstone Woodfi re Grills in Pembroke Pines and Doral. “The city of Pompano didn’t want a large chain restaurant, they wanted local fl air,” Fox says. “We decided since we were going to be on the water, we’d create something new.” The interior is inspired by beach houses from California to Costa Rica. Custom surfboards made by an artist in Kauai, Hawaii, hang on the walls, along with oars from Polynesia. Ceiling chandeliers are created from handmade woven baskets. Driftwood is scattered throughout, and a small, weather-beaten canoe is perched near the back entrance looking as if it just washed up from the ocean. The restaurant’s open atmosphere brings the outdoors in, while the best seats in the house are on the patio, where the beach and ocean are front and center, and Pompano’s pier is off in the distance. On the second fl oor, the atmosphere is more like a beach party. The lively rooftop lounge is quickly gaining status as the best bar view in South Florida. “The idea is to have dinner downstairs, then spend two more hours upstairs and have an entirely different experience,” Fox says.

Obviously, I had an entrepreneurial mindset. “I’m so glad there are no home videos of this.” Sonali began taking voice lessons at the early age of 6 and guitar lessons in middle school. At Stoneman Douglas, she sang in the chorus all four years; on the side, she participated in the music education curriculum at School of Rock, programs that culminated in themed shows—including a celebration of Led Zeppelin music that played into her growing appreciation of classic rock. Along with her love of music, Sonali was passionate about her academics. So it came as no surprise to her parents that she was accepted at Duke University and Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. “Duke was the safer option,” Sonali says. “But I remember my dad saying, ‘After Duke, what is it you’d be doing?’ And I said, ‘Well, music, of course.’ … So my parents were like, OK. Go to NYU and give it a chance. “It’s so hard to make it in music. And there’s a lot of emotional heartache along the way; more doors close than open, and you don’t know if they’re ever going to open. … I could have had a solid path in academics. But if you love something this much, it’s hard to let it go.”

COMING INTO HER OWN Sonali spent much of her fi rst semester at Tisch wondering why the school accepted her. She had only written a handful of songs at that point. Her infl uences were still pop and classic rock. And there were musicians in her classes who already had sizable followings online. “It was incredibly intimidating,” she says. “But you also learn about yourself. You have no choice but to rise to that level, otherwise you’re going to get left behind.” It didn’t hurt that Sonali and some friends entered a contest her freshman year that required entrants to fi lm a video for the Rihanna hit, “Diamonds.” Sonali’s team took it a step further and recorded a cover version of the song to go with their video. Not only did they win the contest and later meet Rihanna backstage at a concert she did in New York, but the video went viral. Two other choices helped elevate Sonali’s profi le. Academically, she focused on the business aspect of the industry, learning about things such as music marketing and studio production that resonate to this day. Musically, she discovered a singer-songwriter path thanks to a freshman roommate who was into Joni Mitchell. The revelation would culminate in “Wake Up,” an extended-play recording that

76 JULY 2018 | LMGFL.COM LMGFL.COM | JULY 2018 77 lthough she’s only 17, Haven Star has no interest in hedging her bets. The Boca Raton-based singer/songwriter, and those in her inner circle, are all in when it comes to a destiny that everyone involved believes is within reach. “I want to be a larger-than-life fi gure, but in the humblest way possible,” Star says with equal parts enthusiasm and conviction. “Music is something that I have been working on and fi ghting for my whole life. I am ready to bring my voice to the world.” With the help of award-winning South Florida composer, songwriter and producer Rudy Pérez, she’s about to do just that. The soon-to-be senior at Boca Raton High School (she’s also home- schooled part of the time) is stepping out as the artist she’s always wanted to be, a fusion of soulful childhood infl uences with a modern pop twist that has the potential to distinguish her sound in a crowded landscape of musical hopefuls. It’s a big leap into the deep end for someone who doesn’t turn 18 until Feb. 1. Then again, it’s not as if Star is fresh off her fi rst talent show. That happened at age 7, when she entered a middle-school event and sang Taylor Swift songs. To this day, she can recall the rush she got from performing. Ask her father and manager, Troy Ross, and he’ll tell you that rush started even earlier. Ross, who played in bluesy rock band Lucky Street for the better part of 18 years, recalls his daughter singing jazz and the blues since age 2. Star never took formal music lessons. She received her fi rst keyboard at a young age and taught herself how to play that, as well as guitar, by ear. After capturing numerous talent competitions as a youngster, Star had her fi rst breakthrough at age 13, when she was asked to sing with the Miami Symphony Orchestra (which she has done four times since). A year later, she performed a sold-out concert at the Crest Theatre in Delray Beach. “She doesn’t sound like a 17-year-old girl,” Ross says. “She sounds like an old soul. She loves the depth and feel of the old-school singers. Haven wants to combine that with new sounds that youth can relate to.” With her dad by her side, Star has been busy working with people in the industry to make her dreams of becoming a famous singer-songwriter a reality—none more important than Pérez. Named “Producer of the Decade” by Billboard in 2010, Pérez is credited with composing more than 300 songs that have cracked a Top 10 chart. He has written and produced music for a who’s who of popular artists—, Michael Bolton, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé, to name a few. “While I’ve had the pleasure of working with the great talents of our generation, my passion now is discovering the future giants,” Pérez says. He thinks he’s found one in Star. The two fi rst met when she was about 11. “From the moment I heard Haven sing, I immediately knew that she was very special,” Pérez recalls. “I am always looking for exceptional talent like Haven. She is the future of our industry, and I can’t wait for people everywhere to see her talent the way I do.” Working with Pérez has given Star some extraordinary opportunities—such as performing live with maestro Eduardo Marturet and the Miami Symphony Orchestra, or working with the likes of Burt Bacharach, Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, Sam Moore, Buddy Guy and Bolton. Pérez works with her in the studio, and producer and musician Jonathan Joseph spends time with Star on her live performing and staging. It’s evident, when speaking to her, that she understands, appreciates and revels in the dedication and discipline needed to have any chance of success—and not just when it comes to music. In addition to recording her debut album (set to drop in fall 2019), Star and her father have been traveling to Los Angeles to pursue acting opportunities. It’s one more reason Star is so excited about what the future holds. “I was lucky to be able to fi nd music at such an early age,” she says. “It’s nice to be able to do what you love and make people feel good because of it.”

LMGFL.COM | JULY 2018 81 82 JULY 2018 | LMGFL.COM WHERE CAN YOU CATCH LIVE PERFORMANCES AT INTIMATE VENUES IN SOUTH FLORIDA? LET US COUNT THE WAYS. BY EMILY BLOCH

South Florida is one of the few regions where you can see an authentic Cuban band, a rising jazz star and a legendary hardcore act performing in different cities along a 70-mile stretch.

It’s that variety—and the sheer number of clubs, theaters and bars where someone can catch a live set on any given night—that has led to the area’s birthing of popular acts from Ariana Grande (Boca Raton) and Camila Cabello (Miami) to Surfer Blood (West Palm Beach) and New Found Glory (Coral Springs).

“I think it’s important for live music venues to have consistency and be open to all sorts of music in their establishment,” says Natalie Smallish, owner and co-founder of the South Florida record label WaxRomantix and the manager of Fort Lauderdale’s Radio Active Records. “We have a great advantage here. There are perks to playing in [the local] music scene.”

Smallish says one of those perks is that most venues in South Florida don’t charge out-of-state performers a production fee, which can make a tour stop more appealing to younger artists that are still pinching pennies.

No matter the reason, the live music scene in the tri-county area is as vibrant as ever. Here are just some of the reasons why.
