Keyser, Jr. 1993 (Painting by Rowan Hughes) Flamenco Philosophy IA My own view of Flamenco is that it is an artistic expression of an intense awareness of the existential human condition. It is an effort to come to terms with the concept that we are all "strangers and afraid, in a world we never made"; that there is probably no higher being, and that even if there is he/she (or it) is irrelevant to the human condition in the final analysis. The truth in Flamenco is that life must be lived and death must be faced on an individual basis; that it is the fundamental responsibility of each man and woman to come to terms with their own alienation with courage, dignity and humor, and to support others in their efforts. It is an excruciatingly honest art form. For flamencos it is this ever-present consciousness of death that gives life itself its meaning; not only as in the tragedy of a child's death from hunger in a far-off land or a senseless drive-by shooting in a big city, but even more fundamentally in death as a consequence of life itself, and the value that must be placed on life at each moment and on each human being at each point in their journey through it. And it is the intensity of this awareness that gave the Gypsy artists their power of expression. -
Catalan Modernism and Vexillology
Catalan Modernism and Vexillology Sebastià Herreros i Agüí Abstract Modernism (Modern Style, Modernisme, or Art Nouveau) was an artistic and cultural movement which flourished in Europe roughly between 1880 and 1915. In Catalonia, because this era coincided with movements for autonomy and independence and the growth of a rich bourgeoisie, Modernism developed in a special way. Differing from the form in other countries, in Catalonia works in the Modern Style included many symbolic elements reflecting the Catalan nationalism of their creators. This paper, which follows Wladyslaw Serwatowski’s 20 ICV presentation on Antoni Gaudí as a vexillographer, studies other Modernist artists and their flag-related works. Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Josep Llimona, Miquel Blay, Alexandre de Riquer, Apel·les Mestres, Antoni Maria Gallissà, Joan Maragall, Josep Maria Jujol, Lluís Masriera, Lluís Millet, and others were masters in many artistic disciplines: Architecture, Sculpture, Jewelry, Poetry, Music, Sigillography, Bookplates, etc. and also, perhaps unconsciously, Vexillography. This paper highlights several flags and banners of unusual quality and national significance: Unió Catalanista, Sant Lluc, CADCI, Catalans d’Amèrica, Ripoll, Orfeó Català, Esbart Català de Dansaires, and some gonfalons and flags from choral groups and sometent (armed civil groups). The Constitution of Angola
The Constitution of Angola LAW ON THE AMENDMENT OF THE CONSTITUTION The amendments to the Constitutional Law introduced in March 1991 through Law No. 12/91 were mainly aimed at creating the requisite constitutional framework for the establishment of multiparty democracy, broadening recognition and guarantees of the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens, and constitutionally enshrining the basic principles of a market economy. Since it was only a partial revision of the Constitutional Law, as necessary as it was urgent, some constitutionally appropriate and important aspects related to the organization of a democratic State based on the rule of law were quite rightly left to be properly dealt with in the Constitutional Law, through a second constitutional revision. As a consequence of the constitutional enshrinement of the establishment of multiparty democracy and the signing, on 31 May 1991, of the Angola Peace Accords, for the first time in the country's history multiparty general elections based on direct and secret universal suffrage were held in September 1992 to chose the President of the Republic and Members of the future Parliament. Without detracting from the powers of the National Assembly to amend the current Constitutional Law and approve the Constitution of the Republic of Angola, it has become indispensable to proceed with the immediate amendment of the Constitutional Law, as planned, aimed essentially at clarification of the political system, the separation of the functions and the interdependence of sovereign bodies, and also at making the status and guarantees of the Constitution explicit, in accordance with the enshrined principles of building a democratic State based on the rule of law in Angola. -
