Last Collection of American Transportation consist of over 160 prints related to land-based modes of transportation primarily in the United States. Item types include advertising cards, posters, broadsides, maps, timetables, views, and other visual materials primarily produced by transportation-affiliated entities such as railroad companies and vehicle and parts manufacturers. The collection features lithographs produced by American artists, printers, and publishers, as well as engravings, letterpress and woodblock prints. Topical subjects include transportation, commerce and manufacturing, technology and engineering, travel and tourism, and geography. -

C:an.a march ) ffi.miill 1966 No. 175 the cover T HIS YEAR marks the half-century birthday for Canadian Nat ional's valiant and sturdy little Z-l-a class electric loco motives. Thei.r entire careers have been spent shuttling back and fOrth through Montreal's Mount Royal Tunnel (at 3.3 miles, second longest in Canada) at the head end of bustling and loaded commuter trains whose vintage passenger cars outwardly belie marks of ancestral private companies. The locomotives and their trains are fighting a losing battle; inevitably, as rush hour follows rush hour, the numbers of those who clamour for the use of this transit umbilical cord increase. Informed observers real ize that consists can not be effectively enlarged nor head ways shortened. CN has pointed this out to its patrons, who in turn have tried to spur their politicians on to back a transit plan which would see conventional rapid transit electric trains replace Canada's only main-line electrification. Inevitably too, the polit icians have dallied, but will not postpone action much longer for at least one good. simple reason: many of these same function aries are among the passengers who, more frequently as time goes on, get left behind on a suburban platform because the "8 :12" just won't take any more passengers. Some day, inexorably, the end will come. Meanwhile, savour the atmosphere of Montreal's wintry, evening suburbia. just cold enough so that the snow squeaks underfoot, captured admirably on film by our own Jimmy Sandilands, as No. 103 pauses at Mount Royal Station to disembark commuters. -

Don Bellamy’s Rapid Transit Solution (BC Electric Railway Motorman, Retired) “Restore THE POWER OF streetcars NOW” Simple solutions that are based on common sense usually have the greatest impact on society. As is often the case, people with practical experience often have a better understanding of the problem, and can see the most efficient, cost effective solutions first. I spoke with Don Bellamy (former Vancouver City Councilor, Police Officer, and BC Electric Railway Motorman) in July 2008, and his solution is the most efficient and financially viable that I have heard, seen or read about. First let’s get a global perspective. In “The Power of Community – How Cuba Survived Peak Oil” viewers see Americans visiting Cuba in 2006 to learn what Peak Oil really means. When Russia fell in 1991, Cuba lost over 50% of its oil imports from 13-14 million tons down to 4 million tons. While cars produce pollution, buildings and homes consume 40% of world energy and produce 50% of all greenhouse gases. “OIL” Energy is needed for elevators, water supply, heating / cooling, lighting, cooking and food storage, making high rise residential buildings unsustainable. Oil is needed for computers, cosmetics, and plastics. Cubans call the transition to life without Oil the “Special Period”. It took 5 years before the pesticide contaminated soil could be brought back to life with composting. Without the OIL based fertilizers (21,000 tons in 1988 to 1,000 tons in 2006) that produced the 1920’s Green Revolution farm food production increase and oil based pesticides needed to reduce pests associated with mono-agriculture, Cuba had to choose Organic farming. -

Davies grew up in north Wales. After serving as a subaltern in the Welch Regiment in the immediate post WWII period, Davies was employed as a personnel officer in British industry until immigrating to Canada in the early 1960s. Thereafter he worked in the linen rental and laundry trade in British Columbia. Davies has written numerous articles and booklets, many relating to British Columbia railway history. Custodial History: The David Davies Railway Collection was donated to the Northern BC Archives directly from the collector in 2013. Scope and Content: The David Davies Railway Collection encompasses all facets of railway history in British Columbia,
