Last Collection of American Transportation consist of over 160 prints related to land-based modes of transportation primarily in the United States. The collection dates from the 1830s into the early 20th century and consists largely of materials pertaining to railroads, with additional items concerning the bicycle and carriage, coach, and wagon industries. Item types include advertising cards, posters, broadsides, maps, timetables, views, and other visual materials primarily produced by transportation-affiliated entities such as railroad companies and vehicle and parts manufacturers. The collection features lithographs produced by American artists, printers, and publishers, as well as engravings, letterpress and woodblock prints. Topical subjects include transportation, commerce and manufacturing, technology and engineering, travel and tourism, and geography. -

Ontario, Simcoe & Huron Railway – Groundbreaking & The “Toronto” Toronto’s First Railway – The Ontario, Simcoe and Huron Railway By Derek Boles, TRHA Historian www.trha.ca At noon on October 15, 1851, hundreds of citizens began to gather in front of Toronto City Hall at the corner of Front and Jarvis streets. There were marching bands and gaily decorated floats and everyone was in a state of excitement. Resplendent in their colourful uniforms were the Sons of Temperance, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Loyal Orange Institution. Soon the crowd was joined by judges, steamboat proprietors, the fire brigade, the members of the provincial legislature, and the railroad commissioners. As the time drew closer to 1 p.m., some of the most important personages in the city began to appear. They included the Chief Justice of Canada West, the Sheriff of the County of York, the Chief Magistrate, bishops of various denominations, the Chief Constable and the Mayor of Toronto. This illustrious congress had gathered to celebrate the inauguration of a new technology. City Hall was an appropriate venue for such a commemoration as it had already hosted the birth of Canada’s telecommunications industry. Just five years earlier in a small room near the Front Street entrance the first telegraph in British North America had been transmitted from Toronto to Hamilton. As the clock tower overhead chimed half past one, the assemblage moved into position to begin the parade, the largest such pageant ever seen in the 17 year history of the City of Toronto. The procession first moved east to Frederick Street, then north to King Street where it turned west. -

Now that it has suddenly reached out and, by purchase, lease and business contact, secured the management or traffic of many connecting and tributary roads, so that it has become the largest railroad system in New England. • It is interesting to recall the fact that, as it was the first railroad chartered in New England for passenger transportation, so it was the first to be completed and operated its entire length, and it was the third or fourth in the United States. • A Significant Fact: • The Boston & Lowell is now a double-track road as far as Nashua, (and the Concord Railroad, constituting a part of the through line, is double-tracked to Concord,) and, including all its branches and leased lines, is in the best possible condition as regards the road-bed, bridges, crossings, switches and signals, and is thoroughly equipped in all respects, with elegant coaches having every appliance pattern; its locomotives are of the best and most powerful pattern; its engineers, conductors and train-men intelligent and efficient men, who have grown up with the road. -

In the 1970s the study of local history moved from isolated case studies to the examination of American life on the local level. This transition has taken a long time. Even with the professionalization of history in the 1880s, local history has been largely left to the antiquarians. -

The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the ph irapher suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and inus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until com plete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.
