Cover picture: Villa close to Vilnius, Lithuania. Constructive exhibition for industry stakeholders Nordbygg attracted 52,500 visitors!

Our stand was buzzing with activity throughout the trade fair. A large number of visitors wanted to see and learn more about the launch of our new building system, Thermo 86, and several other new products from Sapa Building System. Our products for energy-efficient solu- tions are well aligned with future needs and expectations.

Beginning of April, representatives from the building industry gathered at Stockholm International Fairs for NordBygg, the largest Nordic Building and Construction Fair. The fair, which takes place every two years, has now become a regular meeting place for the industry. This time around, almost 52,500 expectant visitors were greeted by around 900 exhibitors from over 30 countries. Our stand was manned by Sapa’s architectural specialists and representatives from Sweden, Norway, , Finland and Lithuania, who were ready to answer ques- tions and get feedback from industry stakeholders. We are pleased to report that almost 90 per cent of our customers from all over the Nordic region, as well as a large number of building contractors, architects, consultants and property managers, took the time to come and meet us. The general impression we gained from this busy trade fair is that our new Thermo 86 building system is fully in line with market expectations and has been very well received. The launch was a big success, which boosts our confidence in the future and gives us the impetus to continue developing what we are best at: rational and energy- efficient building solutions in aluminium.

Forum Sapa Building System 2014-1 3 Nordbygg Launch of Sapa Thermo 86

Sapa Thermo 86 is the next generation of our highly insulated building systems in aluminium for windows, doors and glazed elements.

The system was developed in Sweden and is designed to cope with the harsh Nordic and Baltic climate and meet the particular demands of our market. We have built on our 40 years of experience and listened carefully to our customers, designers and users to develop a system that is both easy to use and offers considerable improvements in performance. Our 2086 Door System has a strong and rigid framework made up of 86-mm-deep profiles. Glass-fibre-reinforced polyamide strips and a filling of specially developed Sapa Thermo N9 insulating rods are used to maximise energy performance. The system also offers excellent weather resistance. Our 1086 Window and 3086 Glazed Element System meet the highest standards of airtightness and rain resistance, and have very low U-values, down to 0.88 W/m2K for the opening versions. They are available in fixed or inward-opening versions, with the option of concealed hinges.

Hx-5 Sepia. Elegant new colour added to anodising colour palette.

Hx-5 Sepia is our new anodising colour from the Hardoxal Bronze scale. Hx-5 Sepia complements a wider range of colour scales and gives profiles and products a soft, warm and elegant appearance while retaining a metallic look. Anodising is the strongest form of surface treatment available for aluminium profiles. It is created by an electrolytic process that builds up a layer of oxide. This layer makes the sur- face harder and more resistant to mechanical wear, UV light and corrosive environments. Anodising gives durable colour and sheen. 8 Forum Sapa Building System 2014-1 Architect’s description The Northern Lights Cathedral (Nordlyktskatedralen) is the most northerly cathedral in Europe, and is located in Alta, Norway. It is an architectural landmark inspired by the north- ern lights: ethereal, fleeting, lyrical and breathtaking. In 2001, Link Arkitektur (then Signatur arkitekter) took part in the prequalification stage to design the Northern Lights Cathedral. Schmidt Hammer Lassen was invited to join the design team, and together we won the competition. In the course of a long planning phase the project evolved into the spectacular end result that is seen today: a titanium-clad church sculpture with a spire that reaches a full 47 metres into the sky, capturing and reflecting the special light in Alta all year round. The church stands out clearly through its interaction with the surrounding landscape. It is situ- ated in the centre of Alta, at the end of a pedestrianised street on a site that is earmarked for a future church park. The vision is that this site will become a central gathering point for all events in the town, large and small. In addition to the worship area itself, which can accom- modate 360 people, the church houses a parish hall, café, classrooms and church offices, as well as a drop-in centre for young people. There are also plans to create a northern lights centre on the lower ground floor. Artist Peter Brandes was selected as the executive artist to work in collaboration with the architect.
