Symposium Entertainment

Ladies and gentlemen! Boys and girls! Welcome to the second annual Empire Symposium; thank you for being a part of this totally inaccurate historical event. Within these pages you will find descriptions of many of the fantastic events and shenanigans to be found at this years Symposium, but please be warned!

Due to such a large gathering of such finely dressed anachronaughts a temporal rift in and space has occured . . . you may witness strange Hoopy Froods from the other side wandering around like lost souls in a state of confusion . . . they can be identified by their odd dress (or near lack thereof ), their insistence on carrying their towels, and their bemused or bewildered gaze. They are “mostly” harmless and can safely be ignored, or engaged with gently.

We are looking forward to a fabulous weekend of mirth and manners, and wish you a fantastic time. To thank you for joining us and making this such a brilliant weekend, the Symposium would like to extend an exclusive offer to all this year’s attendees . . . buy your 2014 Steampunk Symposium badge by “May the 4th” using the discount code 13SES14 and you will save 40% off the advance ticket price. Visit www.SteampunkSymposium. com or www.ThePandoraSociety.com to buy your badge before the end of the week.

Page 1 SYMPOSIUM GUESTS OF HONOUR Whom Shall One Telegraph? THE APPARITION ABOLISHERS! The Apparition Abolishers are a group of steampunk costumers, artists, prop-makers, and performers based in Nashville, TN. The group won Best in Show at the Dragon*Con 2009 Masquerade Costume Contest with their 1st set of group costumes and again in 2012 with a set of mechanical wings. The Clocktease Burlesque and Dr. Torque’s Traveling Exposition of Curious Contraptions and Fantastical Oddities were launched in 2011 at Geek Media Expo. Their artistic endeavors include unique costumes, a web comic, a short film, music video collaboration, and various oddities and contraptions.

Journalist and writer EMILIE P. BUSH has written two Steampunk novels. Her first, Chenda and the Airship Brofman, was a “ripping good yarn!” and the tale was a 2010 Semi-finalist for the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award (ABNA). New this year, The Gospel According to Verdu picks up the epic tale where Chenda left off – high in the skies. In the Spring of 2012, Emilie P. Bush teamed up with illustrator William Kevin Petty for the first ever children’s Steampunk picture book : Her Majesty’s Explorer: a Steampunk bedtime story. This charming tale topped the BESTSELLER list at Amazon. The follow-up Steamduck Learns to FLY! released October 10, 2012, and also made several bestseller lists at Amazon.

STEAMPUNK BOBA FETT ( John F. Strangeway) is one of the most recognized figures in both the Steampunk and Star Wars fan communities. The idea originated in John’s lifelong love ofStar Wars and in particular the cult figure of bounty hunter Boba Fett. He had the idea for a Steampunk variation for quite some time but lacked the resources to build the suit to match his vision. That changed at AnachroCon 2009, where he met Matt Silva of Penny Dreadful Productions. A few months later the two began work on the suit, which debuted at Dragon*Con Page 2 2009 to overwhelming acclaim. John and Matt are featured prominently in the PBS documentary “Four Days at Dragon*Con.”

Author, actress and playwright LEANNA RENEE HIEBER grew up in rural Ohio inventing ghost stories. She graduated with a BFA in Theatre from Miami University, and a focus in the Victorian Era. Her debut novel, The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker, first in her Strangely Beautiful saga, landed on Barnes & Noble’s bestseller lists, won two 2010 Prism Awards (Best Romance, Best First Book), and is currently in development as a musical theatre production and will be reissued in revised new editions via Tor / Macmillan. DARKER STILL: A Novel of Magic Most Foul, first in the Magic Most Foul trilogy was named on the INDIE NEXT LIST as a recommended title by the American Booksellers Association. She is currently serializing the finale of this series in the manner of the Victorians at http://leannareneebooks.blogspot.com. Her books have been chosen for national book club editions and have been translated into several languages. THE ETERNA FILES, her new Gaslamp Fantasy saga from Tor / Macmillan will release in 2014 alongside the Strangely Beautiful re-releases.

Her academic published work can be found inSteampunk Magazine: Issues 1 – 7(Combustion Books, 2011), Fashion Talks: Undressing the Power of Style (SUNY Press, 2012), and Steaming into a Victorian Future (Scarecrow Press, 2012). Page 3 JOHN WHITE has worked as a courtroom artist, served with the United States Air Force, lived in three countries, climbed to the top of Mt. Vesuvius, was privileged to be the Art Director for the Honor Flight Northwest Ohio. John turned his hand to the world of Steampunk in 2010 with The Airship Neverland Trilogy. His first Book Tales of the Airship Neverland: a steampunk fairy tale was released in 2012,and was nominated for the 2012 Steamcon IV Airship Award in the written category. The second book in the series Captain Hook and The Pirates of Mars is slated for a May 2013 release.

BETHALYNNE BAJEMA is a Michigan native with 15 years of experience as a professional artist. Her artwork has been featured in magazines such as Dark Beauty, Dark Realms, Real Detroit, Cthulhu Sex, and Weird Tales, along with contributions to the books Vampire Art Now, Gothic Art Now and John Santerineross’ two coffee table books, Dream and Fruit of the Secret God. She currently spends much of her time juggling too many projects, attempting to be a writer who doesn’t include squirrel references too often and working along side her fiancee –artist Myke Amend.

Lurking out from the shadows, THE VAGABONDS are a crew of nomadic, crime solving, ninja bandits who have an absurd love for terrorizing Boston, Michigan, and Ohio areas. They’d go farther, but because of their fearless leader’s love for messing with machinery he really shouldn’t be touching, that’s about as far as they’ve been able to get. But stay tuned! A few miles of rope, and this may get fixed. From terrorizing “The Man” to assembling like minded individuals into coherent masses for posing and picture taking, they do it all. Being conventionally recognized doesn’t really suit their style at times, but being the good hearted individuals they are, they’ll easily be prepared to give creative instruction on any manner of topics.

Page 4 SYMPOSIUM ENTERTAINMENT

PICKLED BROTHERS CIRCUS with their Fire-Eating, Mental Floss, Sword Swallowing, Glass Walking, Bed of Nails, Juggling and other amazing feats of skill will MC the fantastic line up of entertainment that the Symposium has prepared.

Cincinnati-based AUTOMATON is the premiere power metal troupe. As a concept group, the band weaves their steampunk epic through stage costume, larger-than-life glory-seeking lyrics, and a heavy sound. AUTOMATON’s influences include the classic Iron Maiden and Dio, as well as modern power metal acts such as Falconer and Turisas. Listeners can expect AUTOMATON’s high- energy stage show to reflect the story of their dramatic journey traveling between two bitterly divided nations. Bring your tankards, top hats and MAVERICKS to the Symposium, and prepare to sing along. And headbang.

CHAKRAS originated in 2008. As time progressed and members changed, the sound has progressed to the personality of the current 2010 lineup. Influences range from Faith No More, Lacuna Coil, Tool, Tori Amos to Mazzy Star. Chakras drummer, Steve K., & guitarist, Bill M., both came from metal backgrounds. This is balanced by Bassist, Jeff C., Guitarist , Mark S., & Keyboardist / Cello, Trice S., who come from mainstream rock backgrounds. Andrea’s vocal stylings fall somewhere in the middle. The music is dynamic, exhibiting a wealth of emotion, and running from orchestral nuance to brute force.

DRUNK & SAILOR rock the boat with rousing drinking songs and sea chanteys performed in a highly interactive format. “Lucky” audience members might find themselves dragged onstage to be part of the crew!

Page 5 A chemist, a time traveler, a gentleman explorer, and a mad genius join forces… to save the world with their aural odysseys of steam, strife, and romance! THE EXTRAORDINARY CONTRAPTIONS, those dimension- hopping rock-and-rollers from Atlanta, Georgia, create a total art centered upon epic songwriting and superb musicianship as they spin their melodical tales from a time that never was. They effortlessly fuse the steampunk aesthetic, a DIY work ethic, and rock and roll sensibilities to offer a unique experience that grows and evolves with each new timestream they visit.

FORD THEATRE REUNION have been described as “one of the strangest, most interesting, eclectic bands I’ve ever heard. I don’t know if they fit any genre/classification . . . If you like NEW sounds F T R is the ticket.” (Yelp!); “Visually resplendent, full of performance daring and stylistically indefinable . . . a dark musical carnival”

A sultry, graceful, powerful French-born singer, percussionist and a fiery punk rock guitarist from the golden days of the hardcore scene blended their diverse talents to form FRENCHY AND THE PUNK in 2005. Imagine Django Reinhardt, Johnny Ramone, Siouxsie Sioux and Edith Piaf jamming together at an event hosted by Tim Burton. This is what it might sound like. The unlikely pairing has since released 5 full-length CDs, produced a live concert DVD and performed over 600 shows together all across the U.S. and in Europe. In May 2012, Yahoo Music called them one of the top 25 duos in the US. Their show is a carnival of two that will take you from Paris to CBGBs and back again. A rollicking flapper folk punk cabaret with cleverly crafted songs, pop hooks, Taiko meets Rio de Janeiro pounding drum instrumentals and true DIY attitude.

They are courtesans, veiled dancers to sultans and kings, illuminating decadence with the precision of their hips. Or they are princesses of the East, the finest beauties of their people, trailing riches wherever they step. Or they are sorceresses from beyond the farthest mountains who cast the spells of their craft with flying skirts and a quirk of ruby

Page 6 lips. Though their origins may be shrouded in mystery, one thing is certain: when LES ODALISQUES step out of the airship and onto the stages of the West, nothing will ever be the same again.

QIET started their rise on the Huntington music scene in 2009. What started out as an eclectic arrangement of musicians and instruments has recently grown in to a driven and focused collective, incorporating vastly different music genres to create their unique style. Such a wide range of influence makes for an audibly diverse concert, but the energy that the band brings to the stage make each Qiet show a force of nature. Definitely not an experience to be missed.

DOWDY LIBRARIANS AND CLOCKWORK HOOKERS - A LOOK AT WOMEN IN STEAMPUNK (EMILIE P. BUSH) - Sprouting from pulp fictions and boy’s adventure tales, Steampunk is a masculine genre - or is it? The panelist will debate the roles and characterizations of women in Steampunk Literature and Film.

DR FORGE’S WELDING LAB (DAVE FRANCY) - Did you know that electric arc welding was invented in the 1860’s? Come learn about molecular bonding of metals which has not changed since Victorian Era construction. See how an affordable machine can be safe, fun, and just plain awesome – and learn how you can use welding for your steampunk creations. Second half is hands-on - you can even try welding gears to a base yourself for a $5 materials fee!

DRINKING WITH CALAMITY DAWN (CALAMITY DAWN) - Noted local mixologist will talk about how to create your own cocktails and otherwise talk booze. Some lucky steampunkers will get to taste her concoctions!

ELECTRONICS SEMINAR AND WORKSHOP 1 (PROF. CHARLES AETHER LAB) - Light up your ray gun with Professor Charles. Professor Charles guides you through some basic electronics to give motion, lights, or Tesla energy to your inventions and contraptions. We begin with some basic symbols of the arcane art of electronics and wiring. Then we move on to basic operations of soldering and wire attachment. Finally, you will construct your own test board of illumination and if there is time then we will also construct a pulse illuminator. (Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.)

ELECTRONICS SEMINAR AND WORKSHOP 2 (PROF. CHARLES AETHER LAB) - Take your electronics to the next level and learn to build a sonic screwdriver. This is meant for people that have some basic electronics knowledge or people that attended the first seminar. Professor Charles will first help you make a series of 10 lights blink in a particular pattern. Then we will make some noise at a particular frequency using a basic speaker. Next, we will make

Page 15 some complementing and discordant tones using the same techniques. Finally, time permitting, we will use some of these combinations to control a servo. (Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.)

ELECTRONICS SEMINAR AND WORKSHOP 3 (PROF. CHARLES AETHER LAB) - This workshop is for all skill levels and followers of Tesla. Professor Charles encourages you to bring an electronics project, proposal, or problem that needs to be solved and we can work together to build, plan or modify it to fit your needs. This is an unstructured format to meet the needs anyone that has the spark if inspiration. (Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.)

ENVISIONING A BETTER STEAM SOCIETY: SOCIAL ISSUES &STEAMPUNK// (AY-LEEN THE PEACEMAKER) - A discussion panel where panel participants discuss their thoughts about finding aesthetic inspiration in a historical era rife with sexism, racism and classist thinking. Can the steampunk subculture come to terms with its problematic past, or are we just repeating history, except with ray guns? Together with the audience, we hope to engage in an open dialogue about whether steampunk confronts or condones the historical ideas behind its inspiration, how nineteenth century thinking is re-interpreted in the present day, and what makes steampunk actually “punk.”

FASHION SHOW (THE APPARITION ABOLISHERS) - Come see some of the finest costumes at the con! For details on entering, see the registration table.

THE FIRST SYMPOSIUM HOME BREWING COMPETITION - The Traveling Revelers invite Home Brewers to bring one or more batches to Room 255, and invite interested people to come assist in judging. Bring $5 to donate to charity. Full rules available at Registration. 21+

FISTICUFFS- WHEN THE TOP HATS COME OFF (RING OF STEEL) - An introduction to hand-to-hand combat techniques both historical and modern, all adapted for safe use in stage applications. This is a hands-on workshop, so to speak, so attendees should come prepared to do some moving. (Corsets and other restricted garments will do just fine.) No friend or partner to beat up? Not to worry! We’ll either match you up with another participant or pair you with one of our members.

FROM ARSENIC TO ZINC: VICTORIAN BEAUTY RITUALS & MAKEUP TECHNIQUES (DONNETTE CARNEY-BOGARD& MEG PERKINS, HMAS DAUNTLESS) - A brief
