Monday 30 May - Luxembourg City Madonna & Child, Bruges Market Square Belfry of Bruges Church of Our Lady This morning we join the coach and travel to Luxembourg City for our guided tour of the major heritage sights. We start by exploring the neat network of cobbled streets that make up the pedestrianised Old Town. We can wander the Chemin de la Corniche, often described as Europe’s ‘most beautiful balcony’ and discover views of the city. As well as exploring the more modern face of Luxembourg as a financial GrandInsert Ducal picture Palace here centre we have the chance to visit the castle ruins, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Grand-Ducal Palace. The palace is the town residence of the Grand Duke, first constructed in 1572 by Adam Roberti. It has one of the most beautiful facades in the city and has served as the City’s town hall, Department of Forets during the French administration of Luxembourg and was utilised by the Nazis during the German Accommodation - Grand Hotel de Vianden (3 star) occupation of World War II. After breakfast this morning we join the coach and make our way to Trier, Germany. Located on the banks of the River Mosel, Trier was a Roman colony from the 1st century AD and went on to become a great trading centre at the beginning of the 2nd century AD. There is no place north of the Alps with so many important Roman buildings and such a concentration of traces of Roman settlement so greatly preserved as in Trier, often referred to as the ‘Rome of the North’. Some of these Trier well preserved reminders include the amphitheatre and the Roman thermal baths.
