Daily Seminar Activity

I. Pre-Departure Work

Four pre-departure on-line discussion sessions – #1 in March, #2 & #3 in April, #4 in May. The readings and Blackboard discussion questions to be addressed in each of these four pre-departure sessions are outlined in the syllabus.

II. Travel Itinerary

Day 1 – Monday, May 15 Travel independently to Cincinnati airport for early evening departure to Frankfurt, Germany. Arrangements for students traveling from other cities is possible.

Day 2 – Tuesday, May 16 Arrive in Frankfurt and transfer to Rudesheim, Germany for River Cruise (Rudesheim to Buppard) prior to transfer to . Afternoon rest and dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Luxembourg.

Day 3 – Wednesday, May 17 Morning transfer to Miami University John E. Dolibois European Center (MUDEC) for welcome, orientation, lecture, and site visit. Lunch at MUDEC. Afternoon orientation to the development of the European Union now composed of 25 European countries. Dinner and overnight in Luxembourg. (Opportunities for informal interaction with students studying at MUDEC).

Day 4 – Thursday, May 18 Morning and afternoon with administrators and students at the University of Luxembourg. This visit will entail roundtable discussions on student affairs topics of importance to both the American and Luxembourg delegations. Dinner in Luxembourg with educators and hosts. Overnight in Luxembourg. Day 5 – Friday, May 19 Morning - continued conversations and lunch with administrators and students at the University of Luxembourg. Afternoon seminar session facilitated by Judy Rogers and Lindsay Dobucki reflecting on what we learned from the Luxembourg perspective on student affairs practice. Late afternoon leave for Brugge, Belgium. Dinner and overnight in Brugge.

Day 6 – Saturday, May 20 Morning guided walking tour of the city of Brugge – a Flemish Medieval city with its perfectly preserved squares, market, outstanding churches, museums, and historic architecture. Dinner on your own and afternoon free for independent exploration of the charming shops and cafes of Brugge. A boat trip on the city canals provides another memorable activity. Overnight in Brugge.

Day 7- Sunday, May 21 Return to Luxembourg via Brussels with a stop at Brussels Grand’Place. Continue on to , Luxembourg and the 1000 year old Vianden Castle. Dinner in Vianden and then return to Luxemburg City for overnight.

Day 8 – Monday, May 22 Morning visit to Studierendenwerk Trier at the University of Trier, Germany. Afternoon continued interaction at University with administrators. Late afternoon guided walking tour of Trier, the oldest German city with its Roman ruins, i.e. a section of a Roman wall, amphitheater and Roman baths and throne room. Dinner in Trier with town officials and residents to gain perspective on the “town & gown” relations. Overnight in Luxembourg.

Day 9 – Tuesday, May 23 Morning and early afternoon visits to University of Trier. Panel discussion and informal interactions with University of Trier students, followed by a seminar session facilitated by Judy Rogers and Lindsay Dobucki to process understanding of German higher education and student affairs practice. Dinner on your own and overnight in Luxemburg.

Day 10 – Wednesday, May 24 Transfer to Metz, France. Morning tour the CROUS facilities at University of Metz. Lunch and afternoon roundtable exchange sessions with our French counterparts on current issues in student affairs practice in our respective countries. Late afternoon guided tour of Metz cathedral. Travel to Nancy for dinner on your own in the cafés bordering the charming, recently renovated Place Stanislas, the palace of the Dukes of Lorraine. Overnight in Nancy.

Day 11 - Thursday, May 25 Morning visits with CROUS staff in Nancy and tours of the student facilities. Afternoon meetings with students and faculty of the ICN School of Management at the University of Nancy. Late afternoon transfer to Colmar, France, passing through the historic Alsace region with its colorful wine-country villages. Overnight and dinner in Colmar. After dinner seminar discussion facilitated by Lindsay and Judy processing what we learned about French higher education and student affairs practice.

Day 12 – Friday, May 26 Morning free for sightseeing in charming Colmar with its picturesque old houses and balconies of flowers. Also in Colmar is the Museum of Unterlinden housed in a former 13th century monastery that presents a rich collection of paintings and sculptures dating from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Afternoon transfer to Grindelwald, Switzerland. There will be time to wander this Swiss Alpine village before dinner at the hotel.

Day 13 – Saturday, May 27 Morning in the Alps. You will have the opportunity to hike, ride cable cars, or simply wander and explore the beauty of this area. Afternoon retreat facilitated by Judy and Lindsay. In the context of this breathtaking scenery, we will reflect on this European educational experience and consider how it will influence your professional practice. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 14 – Sunday, May 28 Morning departure for Frankfurt via Mainz, Germany. Afternoon guided tour of the Guttenberg Museum. Dinner and overnight at hotel near the Frankfurt airport. That evening we will close the seminar with a final discussion and farewells.

Day 15 – Monday, May 29 Late morning departure from Frankfurt airport to Cincinnati. We should arrive by late afternoon.

III. Post Travel Work

An evaluation of the seminar, conducted via Blackboard, will take place after our return from Europe.
