A stop will be made in one of Belgium’s best kept secrets, the historic City of Tournai where lunch can be purchased in the picturesque Grand-Place. Admire the magnificent Cathedral & Belfry or just relax and enjoy the ambience of this beautiful city. Continuing our journey through Belgium, a further comfort break will be made en route to Vianden where having checked in to the hotel, your evening meal is included. Day 2 – This morning we start with an included guided visit to the stunning Vianden Castle, which was constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries on the foundations of a Roman 'Castellum' and a Carolingian refuge. It is one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the Romanesque and gothic periods in Europe. Until the beginning of the 15th century it was the seat of the influential Counts of Vianden, who could boast their close connections to the Royal Family of France and the German Imperial court. Fully restored in 1977, Vianden Castle remains one of the most important castles in Europe (please note there are steep paths & steps involved). There will be a little free time afterwards to visit the town at your leisure before this afternoon’s excursion as joined by a local guide you will begin your discovery by coach of the area known as the Mullerthal (Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland). With its impressive rock formations, romantic valleys, amazing views over the Sure Valley as well as charming and picturesque villages and castle ruins, this is a relaxing way to spend the afternoon. We will finish in Echternach, a medieval and historic town famous for its imposing Basilica as well as the world famous “Dancing Procession”. Here, Luxembourg's only Saint, St Willibrord a monk from Northumbria, built an abbey in Echternach around 700AD and your guide will give you an insight in to its history over the centuries. Returning to the hotel your evening meal is included. Day 3 –Today’s excursion is to the City of Luxembourg where we start by visiting the factory outlet of the porcelain maker Villeroy & Boch, where there is always a bargain or two to be had. You will then be joined by your local guide for a tour of the city by foot and by coach. Luxembourg is the city which prompted UNESCO to feature Luxembourg in the ‘World Heritage list’ in 1994. For centuries this city was one of the strongest fortresses in Europe and many of the relics have remained intact. There will then be some free time to purchase lunch in one of the many centrally located cafes and restaurants or you might even choose to visit a local chocolate maker. This afternoon we will visit the fascinating Military History Museum to the Battle of the Bulge (1944-45). This museum houses one of the best private collections and memorabilia from this famous battle and some of the main exhibits are detailed life-size models which give a clear view of the struggles faced by soldiers and civilians. There are also permanent exhibitions dedicated to the Luxembourgish Army, allied soldiers in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. There is a large collection of military equipment, vehicles, documents, photos, maps, personal items, and more. Returning to the hotel, dinner is included this evening Day 4 – Today we travel across the border to Trier, Germany's oldest town, which has an abundance of Roman history & is known for the Roman structure known as the Porta Nigra and its stunning Basilica. We start with an included tour of the town by Roemer Express (electric train), an excellent way to familiarise yourself with the city centre after which, there will be free time to explore at your leisure and buy lunch. Later this afternoon we visit Luxembourg’s Moselle Valley which borders Germany, where a visit is included to one of the wine cellars of this region which includes a tour and tastings. There will be the opportunity of purchasing their excellent wines and ‘cremants’, which for the most part are not exported, as they do not produce sufficient to export their wines. Departing here late afternoon, we return via the valley’s scenic route to Vianden where dinner is included tonight. Day 5 – Checking out of the hotel we travel north through the Ardennes, stopping mid-way to Calais at the unique Distillery of Biercee. Here we begin by viewing a short film which shows the history and values of the Biercee Distillery. This is followed by a brief tour of the factory, finishing in the ‘Taste and Flavours’ room, where you will get to sample one of their top products. A 3-course set lunch is included in the ’Grange des Belges’ a perfect ending to any holiday. This is an ideal opportunity to also purchase their products, many of which can only be bought in Belgium. Continuing through Belgium, we will return to the UK early evening, returning you to your original departure points. Accommodation could be in either/both hotels - 50m apart Simply Groups reserve the right to make changes to the itinerary due to circumstances beyond our control.
