Migration and Cultural Transmission: Making a Home in Iceland Migration and Cultural Transmission: Making a Home in Iceland A thesis submitted for a final examination for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology as an External Student of the University of London By Nína Rós Ísberg 2010 1 Abstract The research is about the assimilation of women immigrants in Icelandic society through domesticity and the home. The focus is on the material practices that act to incorporate ‘foreign women’ into being Icelandic, accepting the ambivalence and resistances that act to preserve certain emotional attachments to former identities whilst at the same time considering the role of the senses and emotions in promoting knowledgeable, gendered subjects capable of acting in changed circumstances. In particular I look at the experience of immigrant women in making and running a home, bringing up their children and how this experience is materialized in daily activities. I focus on a group of German women who came to Iceland in 1949 to work, especially in rural areas where cheap labour was needed. Many of them stayed, married and established families and became Icelandic citizens. Immigration policies in Iceland have been strongly assimilationist and therefore the research shows the effects this assimilation has had on the identity of these women and what implications their identities have for understanding Icelandic identity in general. Comparison of this group to another younger one which has arrived in the last five to fifteen years makes apparent the role of domesticity and kinship relations in assimilating immigrant women into the Icelandic society. The research is carried out according to standard anthropological techniques of interviewing and participant observation. Archival and audio-video material is also used. The material collected is put into historical and social context through a focus on oral history and discussions of current memory work in anthropology and cultural Heritage studies. 2 Acknowledgements Various people have helped me along the way in my work on this thesis.     Hermann Ptilsson Aspects of Norse Place Nallles in the Western Isles I St. Gregory the Great (d. 604) has long been recognized as an outstanding literary interpreter, particularly by those who acknowledge the principle of polysemy or multiplicity of meaning. In a striking passage (quoted here from memory) he suggests that the words of Holy Writ could be compared to square stones; since it is impossible to observe all the sides of such a stone simultaneously, we must turn it over in order to see each of its facets. The same applies, he argues, to the words of the Bible: individual expressions have several meanings and functions, which we cannot properly grasp without observing them from different viewpoints. The learned pope is here, of course, concerned with the 'literal', 'allegorical', 'moral' and 'anagogic' meanings which were supposed to be a special quality of the Bible, but in recent decades the basic principles involved have become fashionable in certain critical circles dealing with secular literature as well (Frye 1957, 72 and elsewhere). Like the multi-faceted or polysemous words of the Bible, Norse place names in the Western Isles have several aspects to them, and it seems desirable that no facet should be omitted from consideration. It is proposed to use St. Gregory's exegetical principle as an intellectual framework for the purpose of organizing a systematic and comprehensive programme for the investigation of those names. When I allude to the three-dimensional Gregorian model in this context, I have in mind that each facet of our notional stone represents a particular area of research, and that once we have satisfactorily dealt with all six aspects of a particular name, the investigation of it has been completed.

This term is not a standard heraldic term, nor is it a common modern term. Given the difficulty one would have in determining what a geline is, we decline to use it in this blazon. We wish to inform the submitter that cants needn’t be blazoned. The arms of the Earls of Arundel, with their martlets, are canting arms: but you’d only know that if you knew that the French for "swallow" is hirondelle. The martlets aren’t blazoned that way; but that doesn’t stop them from canting. The same is true here. The above ruling is directly applicable here as well. The blazon will be difficult to understand if the term noisetier is used; and the cant will still be there, even if the term hazelnut tree is used. We are all in favor of cants, but not at the expense of blazon reproducibility.

At the same time, art projects are “nodal points” that provide entry and linkages between communities across the Atlantic. In this study, based on multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork in Canada and Iceland, I explore this argument by examining ethnic networking between Icelandic-Canadians and the Icelandic state, which adopted neoliberal economic policies between 1991 and 2008. The neoliberal restructuring in Iceland was manifested in the implementation of programs of privatization and deregulation. The tidal wave of free trade, market rationality and expansions across national borders required re-imagined, nationalized accounts of Icelandic identity and society and reconfigurations of the margins of the Icelandic state. Through programs and a range of technologies, discourses, and practices, the Icelandic state worked to create enterprising, empowered, and creative subjects appropriate to the neoliberal project.

The Sustainable Development Goals are a bold commitment to finish what has been started. Coinciding with the historic Paris Agreement on climate change, the SDGs are the promise our young people are calling for, of sustainability, equality and wellbeing for all. The SDGs are also an important reminder that sustainable development is not just an issue for faraway places. Each and every one of us has both rights and obligations in this context. While some of the SDGs might feel distant from our daily lives, they encompass everything that makes life worthwhile, such as education, water, peace and equality, to name just a few.
