Studied physical education at the University of Madeira, and at 24 became the youngest Portuguese coach to obtain a UEFA A licence. • Three years later, in 2001, appointed assistant coach at Madeiran club Camacha, where he impressed sufficiently to take charge of first-team duties two years later. Left to join Chaves midway through 2007/08, masterminding rise to the second division 18 months later. Also won promotion at Beira-Mar after taking charge in summer 2009 and preserved their top-flight status the following season before stepping down. • Signed a three-year contract when he succeeded Domingos Paciência at Braga in 2011 but left after only one having guided the club to a third-placed finish, helped by a record-breaking 13 successive league wins at the turn of the year, and into the UEFA Europa League round of 16. • Confirmed as the new coach of Olympiacos in June 2012, putting pen to paper on a two-year contract, but dismissed the following January despite a ten-point lead in the league. Resurfaced at Sporting, leading the club to second place in the 2013/14 Portuguese Liga. • Subsequently succeeded Claudio Ranieri at Monaco, guiding the club to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in 2014/15, when they finished third in Ligue 1. Jardim and Monaco were third again the following season; that set up a remarkable run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2016/17, an attack-minded young side also winning Ligue 1 ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, before finishing second a year later. Diego Simeone Date of birth: 28 April 1970 Nationality: Argentinian Playing career: Vélez Sarsfield, Pisa, Sevilla, Atlético Madrid (twice), Internazionale Milano, Lazio, Racing Club Coaching career: Racing Club (twice), Estudiantes, River Plate, San Lorenzo, Catania, Atlético Madrid • Launched career as a combative midfielder with Vélez Sarsfield and was a full Argentinian international at 18, making debut in a July 1988 friendly against Australia; went on to play in three FIFA World Cups and retired as Argentina's most-capped player (106 appearances, 11 goals). Moved to Italy in 1990 to join Pisa; two years later he left for Sevilla, where he played under Argentina's 1986 World Cup-winning coach Carlos Bilardo and – for one season – alongside Diego Maradona. • Joined Atlético in 1994 and won the Spanish domestic double in his second season, his first major club honours to add to two Copa América titles (1991 and 1993) plus the 1992 FIFA Confederations Cup with Argentina. • Enjoyed further success after returning to Italy, winning the UEFA Cup with Inter, plus a Serie A and Coppa Italia double in his debut campaign with Lazio (1999/2000). After four years in Rome, he returned to Madrid for a second spell with Atlético before ending his playing career in Argentina with Racing Club. • Started coaching career with Racing Club and won Argentinian titles with Estudiantes (2006 Apertura) and River Plate (2008 Clausura); brief spells at San Lorenzo, Italian club Catania and Racing (again) preceded his appointment in December 2011 at Atlético. • Led Atlético to victory in the 2012 UEFA Europa League final against Athletic Club and to a Copa del Rey final triumph over Real Madrid in 2013. A year later, Atlético held off Barcelona and Madrid to win their first league title since 1996, although they lost to Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final. Para nosotros no es el final de nada; acaso -¿por qué no confesarlo?- podría ser el comienzo de todo. Estamos felices por el triunfo de la Selección y, ya más calmados del primer impacto, estamos felices por todo cuanto hicimos desde el primer día del proceso, al que también podríamos llamar “La Era Menotti” o el “Operativo Mundial 78”. Si no dijéramos que hemos recibido muchas felicitaciones por nuestro trabajo antes y durante el Mundial seríamos insensibles. Nos gustó que nos reconocieran el esfuerzo (ojo, esfuerzo no es sacrificio), pero no encontrábamos la forma adecuada para el agradecimiento. Decir gra- cias es tan convencional como decir “es nuestra obligación”. Detrás de la obligación pusimos el alma del periodista. Y el alma del periodista es su amor, su pasión y su deseo. El Mundial nos obligó a todos los ar- gentinos a esforzarnos; El Gráfico cumplió su papel: durante este mes de junio realizamos las cuatro ediciones normales, más otras tres ediciones extras.
