    1 Primo Levi’s “Small Differences” and the Art of The Periodic Table: A Reading of “Potassium” Murray Baumgarten Monday, August 8, 2011 The brief narratives that make up Primo Levi’s masterful account of a young man’s modern education take the reader through 21 elements of Mendeleev’s Periodic Table, from which the book takes its name. Each episode—Primo Levi calls them “moments”1 -- focuses on one element: we begin with Argon – the inert, noble gas echoing the passivity and accommodation of his Italian Jewish ancestors – and conclude more than 230 pages later with Carbon, whose ability to join with many other elements in what some have thought of as impure combinations, powers life, and generates the kinesthetic action of writing, with which the book concludes. Discourses of Science and of Art: The Two Primo Levis Playing the building blocks of the scientific elements against the personal experience of the narrator, Primo Levi constructs an interactive account.     1 Milan Celtic in origin, Milan was acquired by Rome in 197 B.C. An important center during the Roman era (Mediolânum or Mediolanium), and after having declined as a medieval village, it began to prosper as an archiepiscopal and consular town between the tenth and eleventh centuries. It led the struggle of the Italian cities against the Emperor Frederick I (Barbarossa) at Legnano (1176), securing Italian independence in the Peace of Constance (1183), but the commune was undermined by social unrest. During the thirteenth century, the Visconti and Della Torre families fought to impose their lordship or signoria. The Viscontis prevailed, and under their dominion Milan then became the Renaissance ducal power that served as a concrete reference for the fairy-like atmosphere of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Meanwhile, Milan’s archbishopric was influential, and Carlo Borromeo (1538-1584) became a leading figure during the counter-Reformation. Having passed through the rule of the Sforzas (Francesco Sforza ruled until the city was captured by Louis XII of France in 1498) and the domination of the Hapsburgs, which ended in 1713 with the war of the Spanish Succession, Milan saw the establishment of Austrian rule. The enlightened rule of both Hapsburg emperors (Maria Theresa and Joseph II) encouraged the flowering of enlightenment culture, which Lombard reformers such as the Verri brothers, Cesare Beccaria, and the entire group of intellectuals active around the journal Il caffè bequeathed to Milan during the Jacobin and romantic periods. In fact, the city which fascinated Stendhal when he visited it in 1800 as a second lieutenant in the Napoleonic army became, between the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century, a reference point in the cultural and social field.

  • Rethinking Primo Levi
    Rethinking Primo Levi Primo Levi’s influence in the field of Holocaust studies cannot be underestimated, and the Ottawa conference provides an excellent opportunity to take stock of the effects. From Survival in Auschwitz (1947; 1958) to The Drowned and the Saved (1986), Levi’s writings have become authoritative canonical works of Holocaust literature, providing consistent reference points in our attempts to understand the Nazi camps. Levi’s acerbic account of the Dante-esque descent of the innocent to “the bottom”; his unflinching anatomy of that swift and brutal transformation he calls “the demolition of a man”; and his iteration of the first lesson of Auschwitz—“here there is no why”—have profoundly affected Holocaust scholarship. Indeed, terms and concepts in his work have provided scholars with a number of paradigms. These include the “gray zone,” Levi’s term for the range of compromised human behavior in the camp; Levi’s claim that “if the Lagers had lasted longer a new, harsh language would have been born, ”given that “free words” fail to account for the devastation of camp internment and torture; and his portrayal of “the Muselmänner” as the mute living dead—the “complete witnesses,” who cannot testify and in whose stead the survivors must therefore speak. Seeking to rethink such paradigmatic uses of Levi, this panel focuses on Levi as a writer and author of significant Holocaust texts, but also as a scientist; a writer of science fiction; a sexual being questioning his manhood; and a recorder and critic of the human condition broadly. Following Berel Lang’s 2013 biography of Levi, which proposes that we see Levi’s life as a series of tensions, we probe the“divided road” between his life as a pre-war scientist and a post-war writer; his personal and more global moral commitments; and his ambivalent feelings about his own Jewishness.

Her current research focuses on Italian and French children’s literature. Her other scholastic interests include Italian literature and linguistics, comparative literature, and literary theory. Dalila Colucci is a Ph.D. candidate in Italian Studies at Harvard University. She graduated from the University of Pisa and the Scuola Normale Superiore in 2010 in Italian. Her research interests include Modern and Contemporary Italian Literature, Italian Futurism and the European Avant-garde, Visual Poetry, Travel Literature and reportages. She has worked on the intersections between prose and poetry in twentieth-century authors, publishing a monograph on Goffredo Parise (Nessuno crede al merlo d’acqua� Le ultime Poesie di Goffredo Parise, [Isernia: Cosmo Iannone, 2011]) and various other articles. She is currently working on the poems of Carlo Emilio Gadda, and is also one of the curators of the exhibit “Africa it is Another Story: Looking Back at Italian Colonialism,” opened on April 4, 2014 in the Pusey Library. Simonetta Falasca-Zamponi is a professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research interests mainly fall within the areas of politics and culture. More specifically, she is concerned with studying the political as a site of cultural discourse, cultural identity, and cultural production. Her book, Fascist Spectacle: The Aesthetics of Power in Mussolini’s Italy (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1997) employed the category of “aesthetic politics” to analyze the role that symbolic discourse—in the guise of myths, rituals, images and speeches—played in the making of the fascist regime and the construction of Mussolini’s power.

These authors were particularly sensitive to photographic and cinematic media, which inspired their poetics. Antonio Porta’s poetry, for instance, develops in dialogue with the photographic culture of the time, and makes references to the photographs of crime news.

La scelta dei poeti oggetto della ricerca è stata dettata da due motivi principali: innanzitutto l’autorevolezza che ai tre scrittori è stata riconosciuta nel corso degli anni da parte sia della critica sia del pubblico, per quanto ristretto, degli appassionati di poesia; in secondo luogo il fatto che le opere di questi autori sono l’espressione di poetiche e sensibilità molto diverse fra loro, e che tuttavia hanno attraversato, e stanno tuttora attraversando, lo stesso periodo storico.
