PROFESSIONE VISITANDINA – M Falco

Céline Martins Representations of Thérèse of Lisieux and the Creation of the Authentic Image Joan, Christ and the Virgin: Likening to Holy Figures Célines representation of Thérèse in the guise of Saint Agnès was not the only time she likened her to holy figures in such a way. The buste ovale was very similar to the iconic, half- length representations of the reformer of the Carmelites, Teresa of Ávila.135 Célines later image echoes the composition of a holy card of the saint that the Vicar General of Bayeux, Abbé Révérony, had given Thérèse on the day of her profession, for example (see figure 2.30).136 Here, Céline was not only likening Thérèse to her namesake saint, but was harnessing the pull of the Catholic past and its great figures, suggesting that Thérèse was the latest in the line of descent of a history of Catholic icons, and was the inheritor of a saintly tradition. Céline directly likened Thérèse to a holy figure in her composition Thérèse and Joan of Arc (figure 2.31). Completed in 1909, the year of Joans beatification when, as Céline herself commented, Joan of Arc was at the height of her glory, 137 Céline no doubt wished to liken her sister to this other saint-in-waiting (Joan would be canonised in 1920, only five years before Thérèse), also Thérèses great heroine and a towering figure of the Catholic past. -

'' "When I have presented one corner of a subject to any one and he cannot from it learn the other three, I do not repeat my lesson." —Confucius. MADMEN INTRODUCTORY What appears on the following pages is the result of a desire to see a Spiritualistic Encyclopedia of the Old and New Testaments, together with the testimony of the world's great est scientists, and others, regarding Spiritualism and its phy sical, psychical, mental and spiritual phenomena, in one con cise volume. While the New Testament is looked upon, by the ortho dox, as the final natural or revealed theology for this, the new dispensation, the Old Testament is full, from cover to cover, of spirit writing, materialization, spirit voices, trances, dreams, tests and healing, the record of which is given herewith. This is written, in no way endeavoring to prove the truth of Spirit Return or the Continuity of life after the change called Death, as that truth stands today, a demon strated, scientific fact, proven by the greatest array of sci entific knowledge, gleaned from every enlightened country on the globe, but it is written in an attempt to repudiate some of the booklets and pamphlets, written and published, and lectures and sermons given from the platform, which spoke lightly or jeeringly of this philosophy, through fear of the knowledge it imparts, ignorance of the facts it proves, or are possessors of prejudiced minds. -

ISBN 0-520-24299-8 Review by Margaret H. Darrow, Dartmouth College. This slim volume is a coda to Raymond Jonas's magisterial study, France and the Cult of the Sacred Heart (University of California Press, 2000). That book relates the campaign to consecrate France to the Sacred Heart of Jesus from the original vision of Marguerite-Marie Alacoque in the seventeenth century through the French Revolution and the fraught religious politics of the nineteenth century, culminating with the erection of the basilica of the Sacred Heart on the summit of Montmartre at the turn of the century. The Tragic Tale of Claire Ferchaud takes the story through the First World War; in one year, from the spring of 1917 to the spring of 1918, Claire Ferchaud, a twenty-one year old peasant woman, embodied this cause. Claire came from the Vendée, the heart of Sacred Heart country. From early childhood, she had had intimate visions of Jesus, Mary and other saints who conversed with her and with each other in her own private spiritual world. At first their conversations concerned only herself; in her first encounter with him, Jesus warned her to obey her mother. Under the pressure of the war, however, her visions reached out with their messages to all of France and even to France’s allies. -

Image, Authenticity and the Cult of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, 1897-1959
Image, Authenticity and the Cult of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, 1897-1959 Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Sophia Lucia Deboick January 2011 Acknowledgements To the team at the Archives of the Carmel of Lisieux, heartfelt thanks for indispensible advice and practical help during my weeks in Lisieux, including the provision of everything from Normandy cider to doctor’s appointments (the two not being in any way related). They allowed generous access to these private archives and without their expert knowledge and patient assistance this thesis could never have been written. Also thanks to the prioress, Sœur Dominique, the whole community of the Carmel of Lisieux and their volunteers, many of whom found themselves called to answer the door to me at odd hours and always offered a warm welcome. The Sanctuaire de Lisieux provided accommodation free of charge during my last trip to Lisieux and my thanks go to the pilgrimage team, Laurence Panontin and her colleagues Ria and Barbara, for their help, and also to the Director of the Pilgrimage Office and Rector of the Basilique Sainte- Thérèse, Monsignor Bernard Lagoutte, for allowing me to stay in accommodation normally reserved for the pilgrimage’s volunteer guides. Laurence Fafchamps, of the pilgrimage staff, provided much practical help, enabling me to obtain photographs of the Diorama Sainte-Thérèse and making enquiries about its history on my behalf. The travailleuses missionaires at the Ermitage Sainte-Thérèse provided a wonderful place to stay on other occasions and I thank them for their hospitality to an interloping researcher among the pilgrims. -
