WIFS may parallel aspects of anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder that mostly affects females. Yet, most studies of WIFS and related models use male rats. The present study included female and male rats, where half were given wheel access to measure effects on feeding and body weight. -

BETWEEN SPECIES: CHOREOGRAPHING HUMAN AND NONHUMAN BODIES JONATHAN OSBORN A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN DANCE STUDIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO MAY, 2019 ã Jonathan Osborn, 2019 Abstract BETWEEN SPECIES: CHOREOGRAPHING HUMAN AND NONHUMAN BODIES is a dissertation project informed by practice-led and practice-based modes of engagement, which approaches the space of the zoo as a multispecies, choreographic, affective assemblage. Drawing from critical scholarship in dance literature, zoo studies, human-animal studies, posthuman philosophy, and experiential/somatic field studies, this work utilizes choreographic engagement, with the topography and inhabitants of the Toronto Zoo and the Berlin Zoologischer Garten, to investigate the potential for kinaesthetic exchanges between human and nonhuman subjects. This page intentionally left blank Chemical Ecology of Vertebrates Chemical Ecology of Vertebrates is the first book to focus exclusively on the chem- ically mediated interactions between vertebrates, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, and other animals, and plants. Reviewing the lat- est research in three core areas: pheromones (where the interactions are between members of the same species), interspecific interactions involving allomones (where the sender benefits) and kairomones (where the receiver benefits) This book draws information into a coherent whole from widely varying sources in many different disciplines. Chapters on the environment, properties of odour signals, and the production and release of chemosignals set the stage for dis- cussion of more complex behavioral topics. While the main focus is ecological, dealing with behavior and interactions in the field, it also covers chemorecep- tion, orientation and navigation, the development of behavior, and the practical applications of chemosignals. MARSH, Associate Specialist, Department of Animal Physiology, University of California, Davis, California ABSTRACT: A brief survey is presented of current knowledge on olfaction in rodents and the various roles that odors may play in modifying rodent behavior. Some species at least uti lize olfactory cues: to locate food items; to recognize their mother and mates; to mark territory; as an involuntary population density regulator; possibly to recognize predators; as a warning cue against a repellent or toxic substance (poison-bait shyness); and probably, for many other behavioral purposes. -

The pied butcherbird Cracticus nigrogularis is suggested for a zoömusicological case study on how birdsong might be like the human animal’s music (whether homologous or analogous). Portamento as an impediment to “off-the-shelf” musicology in the case of birdsong analysis is discussed. It is proposed that the employment of different types and levels of description could facilitate the most fecund survey and analysis. An initial survey on how pied butcherbirds use notes, calls, and song is presented, including sonograms and standard music notation, followed by an elucidation of a repertoire of procedures found in both “music” and pied butcherbird song. It is concluded that their elaborate song culture seems to overreach biological necessity, indicating an aesthetic appreciation of sound is present in the pied butcherbird. -

PHEROMONES IN SMALL RODENTS AND THEIR POTENTIAL USE IN PEST CONTROL 0 ERIK CHRISTIANSEN, Norwegian Forest Research Institute, N-1432 As-NLH, Norway ABSTRACT : The paper reviews social interactions in small rodents in which pheromones have been reported to play a part. Some of the chemical messengers involved may have a potential use in control of rodent pests. Research in this field should be encouraged, because alternatives to the current control methods are highly desirable. In 1959, the German chemist Butenandt and his co-workers suggested the term "pheromones" to denote chemical messengers , which when emitted by an animal, release certain reactions In conspecifics (Karlson and Butenandt, 1959; Karlson and Luscher , 1959). By that time Butenandt had finished his 20-year long research that led to the isolation and identif ica tion of the sex attractant pheromone in the female silk moth, Bombyx mori. Since then more than a hundred insect pheromones have been identified, and several are now being used on a practical scale for forecasting population levels and in control programs. Pheromonal effects are likely to occur in any animal phylum and are known to operate In such different groups as e.g. worms, snails, crabs, fish, and snakes, as well as in mammals such as rodents, deer, monkeys, and presumably humans . Only in very few rodents are the chemical composition of pheromones known. These include a house mouse preputial gland pheromone (Spener et al., 1969) the ventral gland pheromone in the male Mongolian gerbil (Thiessen et al. ,"""'1974) , and a sex attractant in hamster vaginal secretion (Singer~!.!._ . -

Recent advances in animal behaviour KM ALEXANDER Department of Zoology, University of Kerala, Kariavattom, Trivandrum 695581, India Abstract. Ethology, a fast developing field of animal sciences has considerable relevance in animal husbandry, agriculture, control ofanimal populations, pest control, medicine, wildlife biology,etc. It has made vast strides of progress during the past fewdecades and some of these trends are reviewed. Communication signals playa salient role in sociobiology of animal groups. Animals deploy visual, acoustic, tactile and olfactory signals during their social interactions. Among these, olfactory cues have certain specific advantages over the other modes concerned. Recently considerable attention has been focussed on chemical signals in animals, especially those of economically important forms such as insects, fishes and mammals. Regarding insects, sex pheromones, aphrodisiacs, trail markers, aggregating and alerting pheromones have been isolated in various insectan orders. The factors controlling sex pheromone behaviour and impact of pheromones on control of insect population have been elaborated. Investigations on chemical cues of lower vertebrates indicate that fishes, amphibians and reptiles deploy them in their social interactions. Pheromones modulate the schooling, reproductive and alarm response behaviour in fishes. Among mammals, urine, fecal pellets, saliva and secretions of specialised skin glands function as sources of olfactory cues. Data on histophysiology, and ultrastructure of specialisedskin glands, biochemistry oftheirsecretions have been collected. Osmetrichia, scent marking patterns and fiehmen responses and their hormonal control have been elucidated. The neuroendocrinological basis of scent marking has been made explicit. Relatively only very few of the mammalian pheromones have been isolated. -
