Printed on acid-free paper. 987654321 springer.com Preface This volume reports the proceedings of the eleventh triennial meeting of the Chemical Signals in Vertebrates International Symposium and thus, is the 30th anniversary of the informal grouping of scientists who convene to discuss their common interests in the ways in which vertebrates use chemical signals. Previ- ous meetings were held in Saratoga Springs, New York; Syracuse, New York; Sarasota, Florida; Laramie, Wyoming; Oxford, England; Philadelphia, Pennsylva- nia; Tubingen, Germany; Ithaca, New York; Krak´ow, Poland and Corvallis, Oregon. The eleventh meeting was hosted by the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Liverpool, and was held in Chester, England. CSiV 11 was the latest in a well regarded series of meetings, and was attended by about 80 scientists, with nearly 120 further co-authors, all with a common interest in vertebrate chemical sig- nalling, and its role in vertebrate behaviour. The species range was, as ever, remark- able – from lion to salamander, from mouse to elephant, from salmon to human, a biodiversity matched by the range of the substances used for communication. As might be expected from such diversity, we enjoyed a broad ranging programme that included sessions on olfactory assessment, pheromone delivery, sexual selec- tion (human and animal), urinary proteins, anti-predator responses, scent organs and their function, individual recognition, species recognition, sexual development and sexual communication (the full programme can still be viewed on the CSiV website). The meeting was launched by a thoughtful and far-reaching presentation from Milos Novotny, on “Genetic and environmental control of volatile mammalian chemosignals: structural and quantitative aspects” in which he introduced a future in which sophisticated ‘omics technologies would feature more strongly. We closed with an equally thoughtful perspective from another of the leading scientists in this field, Dietland M¨uller-Schwarze. As has been a feature of previous meetings, the group was enthusiastic, very willing to make huge species jumps and also to listen and support the younger investigators who often make their first international presentation at this meeting. This collegiate spirit extended to the meeting dinner at the Blue Planet Aquarium, where several members of the group unwittingly donated their watches, courtesy of the magician ‘Magic Matt’, to offset the meeting costs! CSiV has no funds of its own (a small float is carried from one meeting to the next) and we are totally reliant on sponsorship to supplement the registration fees. We are particularly pleased v vi Preface therefore to acknowledge the support of the European Chemoreception Organisation (http://ecro.cesg.cnrs.fr/) and also, the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Liverpool (http://www.liv.ac.uk/vets/). The group is increasingly proud of its acronym (CSiV), in part at least because of the television series featuring analytical forensic chemistry that almost shares the same name! In the period up to the meeting a low key web presence was created (http://www.csiv.org) that will act as a home for the group, but there are still no membership fees, and no restrictions on attendance at the meetings. This website will be the source of information about the twelfth meeting, at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada from July 28th-31st, 2009, organised by Heather Schellinck and colleagues. One name in particular was noticeably absent from the attendees at CSiV 11, that of the wonderfully passionate and insightful Bets Rasmussmen, who was sadly too ill to attend the meeting and who subsequently died on September 17th, 2006. We will remember her fine abilities as a scientist who truly straddled the biochem- ical/behavioural divide, and who did much to allow us to see one another ‘across the gap’. We remember with fondness her enthusiasm, her sense of fun, and her willingness to engage in discussions about the whole field. A tribute chapter from Tom Goodwin and Bruce Shulte captures her unique and fascinating contribution to the field and we are pleased to dedicate this volume to her memory. Finally, it is a pleasure to acknowledge the very considerable ‘behind the scenes” help from all those who helped make the conference a success. We would like to thank Anne Tuson and Marg Hedges, as well as all the members of the Mammalian Behaviour and Evolution Group and the Proteomics and Functional Genomics Group at the University of Liverpool. Animals - Chap 01 22/4/02 9:48 am Page 3 The Study of Animal Behaviour 1 and its Applications Per Jensen Introduction Ethology is the science whereby we study animal behaviour, its causa- tion and its biological function. But what is behaviour? If we spend a few minutes thinking about this, a number of answers may pop up which together illustrate the complexity of the subject. In its simplest form, behaviour may be a series of muscle contractions, perhaps performed in clear response to a specific stimulus, such as in the case of a reflex. However, at the other extreme, we find enormously complex activities, such as birds migrating across the world, continuously assessing their direction and position with the help of various cues from stars, land- marks and geomagneticism. It may not be obvious which stimuli actually trigger the onset of this behaviour. Indeed, a bird kept in a cage in a win- dowless room with constant light will show strong attempts to escape and move towards the south at the appropriate time, without any apparent external cues at all. We would use the word behaviour for both these extremes, and for many other activities in between in complexity. It will include all types of activities that animals engage in, such as locomotion, grooming, repro- duction, caring for young, communication, etc. Behaviour may involve one individual reacting to a stimulus or a physiological change, but may also involve two individuals, each responding to the activities of the other. And why stop there? We would also call it behaviour when ani- mals in a herd or an aggregation coordinate their activities or compete for resources with one another.

The pied butcherbird Cracticus nigrogularis is suggested for a zoömusicological case study on how birdsong might be like the human animal’s music (whether homologous or analogous). Portamento as an impediment to “off-the-shelf” musicology in the case of birdsong analysis is discussed. It is proposed that the employment of different types and levels of description could facilitate the most fecund survey and analysis. An initial survey on how pied butcherbirds use notes, calls, and song is presented, including sonograms and standard music notation, followed by an elucidation of a repertoire of procedures found in both “music” and pied butcherbird song. It is concluded that their elaborate song culture seems to overreach biological necessity, indicating an aesthetic appreciation of sound is present in the pied butcherbird.

    PHEROMONES IN SMALL RODENTS AND THEIR POTENTIAL USE IN PEST CONTROL 0 ERIK CHRISTIANSEN, Norwegian Forest Research Institute, N-1432 As-NLH, Norway ABSTRACT : The paper reviews social interactions in small rodents in which pheromones have been reported to play a part. Some of the chemical messengers involved may have a potential use in control of rodent pests. Research in this field should be encouraged, because alternatives to the current control methods are highly desirable. In 1959, the German chemist Butenandt and his co-workers suggested the term "pheromones" to denote chemical messengers , which when emitted by an animal, release certain reactions In conspecifics (Karlson and Butenandt, 1959; Karlson and Luscher , 1959). By that time Butenandt had finished his 20-year long research that led to the isolation and identif ica­ tion of the sex attractant pheromone in the female silk moth, Bombyx mori. Since then more than a hundred insect pheromones have been identified, and several are now being used on a practical scale for forecasting population levels and in control programs. Pheromonal effects are likely to occur in any animal phylum and are known to operate In such different groups as e.g. worms, snails, crabs, fish, and snakes, as well as in mammals such as rodents, deer, monkeys, and presumably humans . Only in very few rodents are the chemical composition of pheromones known. These include a house mouse preputial gland pheromone (Spener et al., 1969) the ventral gland pheromone in the male Mongolian gerbil (Thiessen et al. ,"""'1974) , and a sex attractant in hamster vaginal secretion (Singer~!.!._ .

Recent advances in animal behaviour KM ALEXANDER Department of Zoology, University of Kerala, Kariavattom, Trivandrum 695581, India Abstract. Ethology, a fast developing field of animal sciences has considerable relevance in animal husbandry, agriculture, control ofanimal populations, pest control, medicine, wildlife biology,etc. It has made vast strides of progress during the past fewdecades and some of these trends are reviewed. Communication signals playa salient role in sociobiology of animal groups. Animals deploy visual, acoustic, tactile and olfactory signals during their social interactions. Among these, olfactory cues have certain specific advantages over the other modes concerned. Recently considerable attention has been focussed on chemical signals in animals, especially those of economically important forms such as insects, fishes and mammals. Regarding insects, sex pheromones, aphrodisiacs, trail markers, aggregating and alerting pheromones have been isolated in various insectan orders. The factors controlling sex pheromone behaviour and impact of pheromones on control of insect population have been elaborated. Investigations on chemical cues of lower vertebrates indicate that fishes, amphibians and reptiles deploy them in their social interactions. Pheromones modulate the schooling, reproductive and alarm response behaviour in fishes. Among mammals, urine, fecal pellets, saliva and secretions of specialised skin glands function as sources of olfactory cues. Data on histophysiology, and ultrastructure of specialisedskin glands, biochemistry oftheirsecretions have been collected. Osmetrichia, scent marking patterns and fiehmen responses and their hormonal control have been elucidated. The neuroendocrinological basis of scent marking has been made explicit. Relatively only very few of the mammalian pheromones have been isolated.
