2nd ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS Göteborg, June 17-20 2009

The 2009 annual conference and general assembly of European Cities Marketing (ECM) will be held in Göteborg, Sweden, from June 17-20, 2009 with the theme EVENTS AND MEETINGS IN THE CITY. On June 17th a special one-day research symposium is planned, including keynote speeches and paper presentations. This symposium will be followed by workshops in the main conference programme that will bring researchers and practitioners together to discuss issues, generate new ideas, and hopefully forge research partnerships. This is a very unique opportunity, designed specifically to bridge the gaps between researchers and practitioners and to foster new research collaborations. The research symposium will be directed by the industry-funded Centre for Tourism at the School of Business, Economics and Law, University of .Your registration for the one-day re- search symposium includes full participation in the annual conference of European Cities Marke- ting (ECM), including the wrap-up Midsummer party. We warmly recommend researchers to stay through the conference to participate in three parallel streams of workshops – discussing sport events, meetings, and festivals/cultural events. We are honored to welcome some great keynote speakers to participate in both the research symposium and the conference including Professor Donald Getz, Dr. Joe Goldblatt, Professor Ulrich Wünsch and Rob Davidson Senior Lecturer in Business Travel & Tourism, University of Westminster. Call for papers Abstracts of proposed papers should be written in English and must not be more than 500 words in length. It must include the following: title; author(s); affiliations; research aims; approach and key arguments/findings. Abstracts and papers will be peer-reviewed and included in the conference proceedings. A selection of papers will be considered for production of an edited book on the main theme of “Events and Meetings in the City”. Moreover, selected papers will be considered for a special issue in the international research journal “Tourism”.

Abstracts should be e-mailed to the symposium organizers no later than March 30, 2009. Notification of acceptance will be given within 4 weeks. Full papers to be included in the proceedings and consi- dered for publication must be submitted no later than May 30, 2009 and not exceed 7.000 words.

Conference aims: • To advance events research as a thriving interdisciplinary field of the social sciences • To provide a forum for research collaboration and the mentoring of emerging event researchers • Bring researchers and practitioners together to discuss issues, generate new ideas, and forge research partnerships

Suggested topics (covering all types of planned events): • Planned events and city marketing (image, positioning, co-branding) • Bidding on events • Creating new events • Policy and the politics of event tourism • Motivation for attending events; demand and segmentation • Antecedents and constraints to event attendance • The event experience and meanings attached to them • Event design and programming (themes, atmosphere, programming) • Event settings (both unique and traditional hospitality venues) • Service delivery and quality control at events • Management of events (e.g., stakehoders; strategies; human resources; marke • Hospitality at events (food services, business to business) • Impact evaluation (costs and benefits; a triple bottom line approach; sustainability issues) • Valuing events (what are they worth to society or to business?)
