Bartsch, Halle (Saale), 2017 LIVERILLEN No. 03 Bluesrock vom Feinsten 00 Jingle + Begrüßung: 03:00 ➢ Und damit herzlich Willkommen zur dritten Sendung der LIVERILLEN hier auf Radio CORAX auf UKW 95,9 und weltweit im Netz – einen guten Tag wünscht Paul Bartsch! ➢ Wie stets gibt’s ausschließlich Konzertmitschnitte direkt von Vinyl, mit Knistern und Knacken > analoger Hörgenuss im digitalen Zeitalter! ➢ Heute lautet das Motto: Bluesrock vom Feinsten / ein Musikstil also, der ganz gegensätzliche Reaktionen hervorruft: Die Einen fühlen sich gelangweilt vom angeblich immer gleichen 12-Takt- Blues-Schema, und die anderen sind gerade von dieser zeitlosen Kraft und Urwüchsigkeit fasziniert! ➢ Ich persönlich gestehe, zu Letzteren zu gehören, zumal schon durch die jeweilige Spielweise der Protagonisten eine große Vielfalt entsteht, was auch die heutige Sendung mit ihren ausgewählten Liveaufnahmen sicher zeigen wird. ➢ Und da geht’s zunächst ganz tief in die Mottenkiste der populären Musik, ohne dass ich nun die Bluesgeschichte in Gänze aufrollen werde. Aber dieser schwarze Musiker ist nicht wegzudenken für das, was seit den 1960er Jahren dann als Bluesrock firmierte. Musiker wie Keith Richards, John Mayall oder auch Eric Clapton sind vor dieser Gitarre ehrfürchtig niedergekniet, auch wenn die wenigen erhaltenen Aufnahmen Jahrzehnte zuvor entstanden waren – die Rede ist von Robert Johnson, dem 1911 im US-Staat Mississippi geborenen Gitarristen, Sänger und Komponisten, der nach nur 27 Jahren verstarb – Giftmord? Syphilis? Todesursache offen – die Legenden ranken. Dazu gleich mehr – hier ist Robert Johnson, der King des schwarzen Delta-Blues, mit seiner Komposition „Love In Vain“ – ein ziemlich bitteres Liebeslied, live eingespielt bei einer Aufnahmesession im Jahr 1937: 01 Robert Johnson: Love In vain 05:00 ➢ Robert Johnson – an ihm ist wohl keiner der später und bis heute dem Blues verfallenen Musiker vorbeigekommen. -

I am selling the cream of my collection.” Eric Clapton, February 2004 Crossroads Guitar Auction Eric Clapton and Friends for the Crossroads Centre June 24, 2004 New York – On June 24, 1999, Christie’s New York organized A Selection of Eric Clapton’s Guitars ~ In Aid of the Crossroads Centre, a sale that became legendary overnight. Exactly five years later, on June 24, 2004, Christie’s will present the sequel when a group of 56 guitars, described by Eric Clapton as “the cream of my collection,” as well as instruments donated by musician friends such as Pete Townshend, will be offered. Featuring iconic instruments such as ‘Blackie’ and the cherry-red 1964 Gibson ES-335, Crossroads Guitar Auction ~ Eric Clapton and Friends for the Crossroads Centre, promises to be a worthy successor to the seminal 1999 sale. The proceeds of the sale will benefit the Crossroads Centre in Antigua. Referring to the selection of guitars that will be offered in this sale, Eric Clapton said: “These guitars are in fact the ones that I kept back from the first auction because I seriously couldn’t consider parting with them at that point … I think they are a really good representation of Rock Culture .. -

Hec Rivera Hec Rivera is a Houston, Texas-based country, rock and jazz guitarist. Raised in Rio Grande City, Texas, he has performed professionally since high school, and has since made a successful career performing, recording, and teaching. "It's a tremendous privilege to be able to tell people that this is what you do for a living," he says. "To be able to do it every day alongside people who have become family makes the experience all the better." In addition to music, Hec is an avid history buff, and enjoys fishing, aviation, the Boston Red Sox, billiards, writing, concerts, and documentaries. He cites Don Felder, Neal Schon, Richie Sambora, Eric Johnson, Steve Lukather, and his close friend and mentor, John Calderon, as his primary influences. He currently plays lead guitar and sings backing vocals for Justin van Sant, and resides in Houston, Texas. He uses MusicMan, Paul Reed Smith, Gibson, and ESP guitars, Ernie Ball strings, and Peavey, Top Hat, Mesa, and Jet City / Soldano amplification. Brixworth and District Newsletter Learn, laugh, live Registered Charity No 1178196 Issue 76 August 2021 THE BIG DEBATE – WHO IS THE GREATEST GUITARIST With so many talented and accomplished musicians using the guitar as their instrument of choice, from the early bluesmen to modern-day shredders and rockers, it is inevitable that no two-people will choose the same guitarist as their “greatest guitarist of all time”. It would be very easy for me to say that, in my opinion, my vote would go to …………. However, that is not my intention. Instead, this month’s musical journey may, hopefully, shine some light on a few players with whom you might not be too familiar, and who you might like to give a further look and listen to after this. Although a guitar is just a guitar, the sounds that they make in the hands of the ‘top players’ can be very different, as I will endeavour to demonstrate in this month’s randomly ordered selection. We start off with a player who is technically perfect, and whom we saw playing the piano in an earlier musical edition of the newsletter. That is ERIC JOHNSON, who is way above the technical skills of the more well-known Eric Clapton. The track I have selected really does demonstrate his virtuosity on the 6-string Fender Stratocaster, the tonal quality and changes are superb and a delight on the ears - Eric Johnson - Trail of Tears ‘Live 1988’ - YouTube Jazzing it up a bit, we have Swedish showman YNGWIE (Ing-Vay) MALMSTEEN, whose concert and album playlists includes classical pieces from Paganini, Vivaldi, Bach, etc. -

21 In the Studio: The Role of Recording Techniques in Rock Music (2006) John Covach I want this record to be perfect. Meticulously perfect. Steely Dan-perfect. -Dave Grohl, commencing work on the Foo Fighters 2002 record One by One When we speak of popular music, we should speak not of songs but rather; of recordings, which are created in the studio by musicians, engineers and producers who aim not only to capture good performances, but more, to create aesthetic objects. (Zak 200 I, xvi-xvii) In this "interlude" Jon Covach, Professor of Music at the Eastman School of Music, provides a clear introduction to the basic elements of recorded sound: ambience, which includes reverb and echo; equalization; and stereo placement He also describes a particularly useful means of visualizing and analyzing recordings. The student might begin by becoming sensitive to the three dimensions of height (frequency range), width (stereo placement) and depth (ambience), and from there go on to con sider other special effects. One way to analyze the music, then, is to work backward from the final product, to listen carefully and imagine how it was created by the engineer and producer. To illustrate this process, Covach provides analyses .of two songs created by famous producers in different eras: Steely Dan's "Josie" and Phil Spector's "Da Doo Ron Ron:' Records, tapes, and CDs are central to the history of rock music, and since the mid 1990s, digital downloading and file sharing have also become significant factors in how music gets from the artists to listeners. Live performance is also important, and some groups-such as the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, and more recently Phish and Widespread Panic-have been more oriented toward performances that change from night to night than with authoritative versions of tunes that are produced in a recording studio. -

Here’s the man behind the music. by AVERY GREGURICH | photography by KATHRYN GAMBLE Bob Dorr in his garage studio, surrounded by the combination of vintage and state-of-the-art gear he uses to produce his three radio shows Backtracks, Beatles Medley, and Blue Avenue. 46 iowan.com July/August 2015 THE IOWAN 47 EVERYBODY NEEDS THE BLUES Dorr is a blues historian and practitioner who prefers “traditional ’50s and ’60s Chicago-style blues.” As a member of a listening project put together by the Blues Foundation (blues.org), a Memphis nonprofit that calls itself “the international home of blues music,” Dorr has been “inundated with blues releases.” Here are four Iowa blues artists that Dorr says you should be listening to right now. JOE AND VICKI PRICE joepriceblue.com To Dorr, Joe and Vicki Price epitomize “the real deal.” “Joe Price has been a hero of mine since the mid-’70s, when he was part of the Mother Blues Band in Iowa City,” he says. The husband and wife duo have been playing and touring together since 1982 and have shared the stage with the likes of Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, and fellow Iowan Greg Brown. Their album Rain or Shine won the Independent Music Award for Best Blues CD of 2010. They call Decorah home but are rarely there long. They tour nationally and perform often at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago.
