Great Torrington Town Council Honorary Freedom of the Town
Great Torrington Town Council is pleased to announce the investiture of Councillor Harold Martin as the Town Mayor for 2013/14. Councillor Mrs Zoe Fordham-Moore was elected as Deputy Mayor. The retiring Mayor’s Good Citizen Award was presented to Mrs Anne Tattersall in recognition of the excellent work she has undertaken in organising events to raise funds for the North Devon Hospice, one of the retiring Mayor’s elected charities for 2012/13 and her continued support of those suffering from cancer within the community of Great Torrington. The Howe Plate was presented to Mr & Mrs John Kimber and family for the excellent work they have undertaken raising money for, and helping run charities, both home and abroad. Great Torrington Town Council Honorary Freedom of The Town and Parish Notice is hereby given that Dr Harry Cramp MBE is to be awarded the Honorary Freedom of the Town and Parish for his outstanding contribution to the Town and its community since he first moved here in 1964. Members of the public are welcome to witness the admission ceremony at: The Plough Arts Centre, Fore Street, Great Torrington on Friday 26th July 2013. It would be appreciated if those attending could be seated by 6.45pm Message from the Mayor This is my first item as your new Mayor. I took up office on 14th May and count it an honour and a privilege to be your Mayor. My Mayoress and I started by having a very enjoyable day at Hatchmoor Nursing Home on the 1st June when we joined them for their summer fete. -

Hello from the Mayor Since last writing to you I have attended various events. On Saturday, 16th March I spent the morning with Bideford Town Council to celebrate the age-old Manor Court ceremony. This is where members of the public ask questions of the Council, in the manner of a jury, about making improvements around the Town. There was also an interesting talk given about the local pottery. That same evening I attended a celebration of St Patrick’s Day at the Plough with Big Al and his band playing Irish folk tunes. Some visitors from France, along with their delightful children, danced around with adults in Leprechaun costumes. It was a fun evening’s entertainment and was well supported, as Ann Tattersall’s events always are. Yet another of her successful fundraising events for my chosen charities this year, The North Devon Hospice and the Plough. On 27th March our children at the Junior School invited Cheryl and I to receive a presentation on the regeneration of our Town and their visions for the future. This was the result of their viewing the recent Inside Out programme. They spent many weeks interviewing towns people in the square, visiting local shops and they also visited the old creamery site at the bottom of Mill Street. I was so impressed by the way it had been conducted. Some of their poems have been on display in the Plough. Their presentation was so well written that I decided their efforts should be recognized by a wider circle. I have therefore asked them to come along to a meeting of the Planning Committee of the Town Council, to present their findings to us in person. -
The Tarka Trail, North Devon—Section Three Place to Walk
The Tarka Trail, North Devon—Section Three Place To Walk Location & Access: The Tarka Trail is a long distance footpath / cycleway in north Devon. The town of Barnstaple acts as a transport hub for the trail, and there is a working railway station here that links to Exeter Central and Exeter St Davids. Public buses run from Barnstaple to Braunton (Route 21 to Ilfracombe); Barnstaple to Bideford (Route 21); and Barnstaple to Torrington (Route 71). It is also possible to connect by bus from Barnstaple to Meeth (via Torrington), but the service is not regular, and some planning would be required. Salt marshes, mud flats, historic towns, industrial archaeology, abundant wildlife & birdlife, literary connections with Henry Williamson’s ‘Tarka the Otter’. Description: This article focuses on the third section of the trail (6 miles), from Bideford to Torrington along the banks of the river Torridge. The start point for this section of the Tarka Trail is the site of the old Bideford railway station. The trail follows the line of the old railway system which reached here in 1855, with the extension to Torrington opened in 1870. The Torrington section closed to passengers in 1965, but continued to be used as a freight line up until 1982. Bideford Station has been well preserved, and the main building that remains was originally one of the waiting rooms, with a canopy over the platform. A plaque on the wall records the official opening of the Tarka Trail in 1992 by the Prince of Wales. -

The reality of Global Warming is still hotly contested by many of our scientific ‘boffins’ but there can be no disputing the unseasonal and somewhat bizarre weather we have been experiencing over the past couple of months. Whilst this part of the country has been spared much of the misery caused by flooding that others elsewhere have suffered, the continuous and often torrential rain fall has created many problems locally. Landslides along sections of the main road from Bideford to Torrington and the subsequent attempts to repair them have created nightmares for many people having to drive to and from work in this region circumventing road closures. Thankfully the Rivers Taw and more especially the Torridge, although both flowing fast and high, have not breached their banks and have been more or less behaving themselves. However, the land is absolutely saturated and has had little chance to dry out between showers. It was with considerable consternation that I read an email sent to me by a visitor to the area who had set out to enjoy a walk along the permissive footpath section of Lord Rolle’s Canal, only to discover that a length of stone revetment, retaining the tow path at one of the sheerest sections of the hillside, had collapsed and fallen away, removing a significant quantity of stone and backfill, as can be seen on the front cover of this newsletter. -

IWA DIRECTORY OF THE INLAND WATERWAYS OF GREAT BRITAIN OVERVIEW This Excel workbook lists inland waterways in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland), including those open to navigation, those under restoration and those remaining derelict. It shows navigation authorities and other bodies with a navigation management interest (such as canal restoration societies) and the status of each such body, as well as local government authorities covering each section of waterway. Other information is included as detailed below. For the purposes of this database, inland waterways have been taken to include: > all non-tidal waterways where navigation is or has been practised regularly by cargo-carrying craft, passenger craft and/or motorised recreational craft; > tidal waterways where navigation is or has been practised regularly by cargo-carrying or passenger craft on internal (non-seagoing) traffics and/or by motorised recreational vessels without open-sea capability; > tidal canals constructed to extend navigation inland; > waterways named in the Department for Transport's inventory of inland waterways used for the purposes of compiling inland waterways freight statistics. Only waterways known to have been regularly used by types of craft described above are included. Planned waterways never constructed and partially constructed waterways never brought into use are omitted. Scottish sea lochs are only included where they fulfil the criteria above and are linked to other inland waterways. There is evidence that a number of other natural waterways were used occasionally in mediaeval times and earlier, when water levels allowed, to move heavy cargoes, for example stone for construction projects, but such transport was often subject to long delays and many hazards and such waterways are not included unless later development led to regular use. -

BERKSHIRE INDUSTRIAL ARCHAEOLOGY GROUP BIAG News No 31, Autumn 2013 Editor: John Coulson http://www.biag.org.uk ____________________________________________________________________________________ Torrington and Marland Light Railway Dennis Johnson Over the last 30 to 40 years my wife, Janet, and I have holidayed from time to time in North Devon, frequently around the Bideford and Barnstaple area. Amongst other things we have cycled the Tarka Trail, which is on the bed of an old railway line, and had a drink in the “Puffing Billy” at the old Torrington Station. When, about 20 years ago, we explored the trail beyond Torrington we cycled to the area of some old clay pits near the village of Peters Marland. During another visit about 10 years ago we discovered the cafe at Fremington Quay; this had an interesting display of photographs from the beginning of the 20th century, of the railway and quay in use for exporting clay. About this time we also witnessed the loading of a big ship on Bideford Quay with what turned out to be clay. These scenes triggered the connection between the quay at Fremington and the line which became the Tarka Trail. At the South Wales and South West IA conference in 2013 I bought a book entitled “North Devon Clay” by Michael Messenger; with this I started to pull together the various experiences we had in North Devon. During a recent trip to stay in Instow, in an apartment adjacent to the old Instow station platform, I started to add up all these experience and to put together a talk for the benefit of BIAG members.
