G R I F F I N University of Sussex ABSTRACT. No form of English popular protest has been subject to such close scholarly analysis as the eighteenth-century food riot, a response not just to the understanding that food riots comprised two out of every three crowd actions but also to the influence of E. P. Thompson’s seminal paper ‘The moral economy of the English crowd’. If the food riot is now understood as an event of consid- erable complexity, one assertion remains unchallenged: that riots remained a tradition of the towns, with agrarian society all but unaffected by food rioting. This article offers a new interpretation in which the rural is not just the backdrop to food protests but instead a locus and focus of collective actions over the marketing of provisions, with agricultural workers taking centre stage. It is shown that agricultural workers often took the lead in market town riots as well as well as in instigating riots in the countryside.

    1 Combe Rail members' magazine Issue #1 - Spring 2016 (Combe Rail - Charitable Incorporated Organization 1164083) WELCOME! A warm welcome to all new members of Combe Rail! As of 4th April 2016, membership stands at 88, with new supporters joining each week. This is a remarkable achievement for the four months we've been in operation, and testifies to the great affection in which the Ilfracombe-Barnstaple railway is still held. Combe Rail was set up to "preserve the heritage" of this railway, and we already have several exciting plans in place (see below.) This newsletter, The Devon Belle, will also play its part in preserving the line's heritage, by collecting and publishing YOUR articles, histories, memories and photographs. Two recent Facebook groups Railway to Ilfracombe…in Pictures and Reversing Beeching - The Ilfracombe Line have produced a treasure-trove of photos and recollections - but as is often the way with Facebook, many photos are uncredited, and interesting information can be spread across separate threads. The Devon Belle will be the first regular (quarterly) periodical about the line, and all articles will be indexed, to create an ever-growing reference work.     EEC/07/63/HQ Environment, Economy and Culture Overview/Scrutiny Committee 5 March 2007 Market and Coastal Towns Report of the Director of Environment, Economy and Culture 1. Summary In January 2006, members received a report on the draft Devon Sites and Premises Strategy and as a result expressed concern about the shortage of premises for smaller businesses. It was resolved that a further report be submitted, which covered economic development issues relating to Market Towns, including the availability of sites for relocation of small businesses and the Market and Coastal Town initiative (MCTi). This report concentrates on work undertaken in association with the MCTi pending further analysis of specific matters relevant to business premises. 2. Background In the South West, the MCTi commenced in 2000 and was led by the Regional Development Agency, Countryside Agency and English Heritage, with support from many other bodies. The scheme received greater emphasis following the incidence of Foot and Mouth Disease and a number of towns adversely affected were included in the programme. Since October 2004, delivery of the initiative has been charged to the Market and Coastal Towns Association (MCTA). This is an independent organisation largely funded by the Regional Development Agency, English Heritage and Big Lottery Fund. The initiative is a community based regeneration programme focusing on the preparation, by local people, of a long term Community Strategic Plan covering the social, economic, environmental and cultural features of their town and its hinterland. The MCTA delivers capacity building support to communities, enabling them to prepare the plans and develop their skills and organisational capacity while sharing good practice with others.

    Shaping our communities to 2031 Regulation 19 Publication Version February 2015 West Devon - A Leading Rural Council Foreword Welcome to ‘Our Plan’, a new strategic plan for West Devon. Whilst the Core Strategy was a plan for future growth and development to take us from 2006 to 2026, since it was written planning policy has undergone some significant changes as set out in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and we need to ensure our plans are fit for purpose and in conformity with this national policy. This new plan also has to cover a wider range of issues that go beyond traditional planning policy and it makes more sense to write a new plan rather than try and amend the existing ones. Therefore, ‘Our Plan’ will be the overarching strategic plan for the Borough of West Devon up to 2031. Developing a new plan is always challenging and it is often controversial with different sectors and individuals in our communities understandably seeing things from their own view point. However, we need to remember that we are planning for the communities of tomorrow not just for ourselves today. What we do now will have a significant impact on how people live their lives in West Devon in the future. Our biggest challenge is enabling growth and providing much needed homes and jobs whilst, at the same time, protecting the beautiful place that is West Devon - no mean feat as I’m sure you can appreciate. To do this we have gathered and considered evidence about local need and the views and comments shared by you and a wide range of partners during the process have helped us to shape a plan that we believe takes account of local needs and aspirations.

    A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened.

    A study of motivation and the satisficing approaches used by Professional Craft Artists Sophie Bennett PhD Thesis Aberystwyth University 2015 Vol 1 1 Abstract This research investigates the way in which Professional Craft Artists (Pro-C Artists) operating in the rural sub-regions of Wales achieve a balance between co-existing, paradoxical motives. Previous studies have identified the existence of both intrinsic and extrinsic motives within the visual arts (Hirschman, 1983; RIPPLE, 1998; Fillis & McAuley, 2005) in, for example, the need to both earn an income and gain self-fulfilment from creative work. Such circumstances are investigated in this study, where the settlement of a satisfactory outcome both in terms of the level of satisfaction and income received can be seen in the production of visual art and craft. Intrinsic and extrinsic motives are considered, alongside external socio-environmental factors including location, materials and networks, in order to investigate paradoxical motives in creative work. Quantitative questionnaires have been used to identify Pro-C Artists operating within Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Powys and select seventeen participants who took part in the research. Qualitative interviews are used to identify motives and satisficing approaches used in the visual arts sector. The findings from this research highlight the three main satisficing approaches that are used to manage conflicting tensions. These are presented in the concluding section to explain the significance of managing such tensions within the workplace, and also in relation to current rural strategies and creative support organisations, to consider how investment in the visual arts sector may contribute to rural localities. 2 Acknowledgements I would like to thank my supervisors Professor Steve McGuire and Dr Rachel Rahman for their support and guidance throughout this research.
