The Good News Currently we are lobbying on national and local maritime issues. Last year we started a petition to support ‘Kathleen & May’. She is still in the UK, and recently visited Bideford much to the delight of North Devon folk. She remains, run by a Trust, in a berth adjacent to the Maritime Museum in Liverpool. Deputy Chair Jonathan Seagrave has this year led on issues regarding fuel for historic vessels such as ‘Shieldhall’. Your Society has responded as a ‘stakeholder’ to the new National Historic Ships consultation, and recently I have been involved in the launch of the Plymouth area Maritime Focus Group, which contains 20 plus organisations. We aim to promote all aspects of the local maritime community and will press for a large ‘maritime footprint’ in the new Plymouth History Centre, due to be completed in time for ‘Mayflower 400’ in 2020. Our publications, thanks to the sterling work of editor, and founder member, David Clement, now include colour illustrations and bumper annual Journals. A new monograph is planned for issue free to members in 2015. We have recently launched SWMHS on ‘Facebook’ and ‘Twitter’, overseen by Sarah Parsons, now at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth. We are solvent and our bank balance is healthy. 4 The Bad News Attendance at meetings is now only moderate, sometimes under 10, from our own membership, but countered by holding joint events with like minded groups. Perhaps age, fuel costs and family commitments make it difficult for members to attend all day events? The Society is held in much esteem worldwide BUT..... This year we have lost our Secretary Peter Sims who has had to resign due to ill health. We are very grateful for his contributions over the years. Jonathan Seagrave has been unwell recently. A few weeks ago our web-master Dave Hills sadly died from cancer. Your Society was represented by two former Chairmen, David Clement, Dale Thomas and by myself. Dave Hills’ work in designing & building our web-site and in running it was immense. The committee will miss his friendly, quiet leadership in this aspect of our Society’s work. He was a true gentleman. A new site has been built, commercially at some cost, but we need volunteers to edit new content and to respond to queries on the Forum once it becomes operational. For over a year we have had immense problems with banking at RBS. We would like to have a press/PR person too. We are delighted to welcome Paul Wright, recently retired from lead at the Navigation Department of Plymouth University, as link with the Plymouth District Maritime Forum , and Ray Fordham to guest edit the next Soundings, but we desperately need more new blood. We are solvent, but cannot routinely pay for basic admin tasks. We are pretty clear we can’t continue in quite the same way. Without more volunteers, your Society will have to cut back on activities, or even amalgamate with another, in order to survive as a future active force in the maritime research and heritage field. We badly need your feedback and input. 5 We invite members to consider what we should do in order to see if we can move forward again into our fourth decade. We will be putting together serious proposals for the AGM, and committing half the day then to working on these. The following are just some of the topics we will need to discuss and make formal recommendations to the AGM. Do send comments to me, in good time, if you can’t make the AGM date. ( June 6th) Some Questions What do you value most about what we do as a Society? (Meetings/ MSW/ SWS/ Advocacy) What things could we drop ? Do you read news, webery? Reviews? Meeting reports? Should some meetings be shorter evening meetings for a local area ? Should there be a combined publication, SWS +MSW twice a year, with somewhat reduced content ? Should we continue to produce monographs? On what charging basis? Looking ahead, it would be possible to divide up the work involved in preparing Soundings and Maritime South West, and maybe change the frequency of appearance to reflect the limited editorial resource we have, and ensure continuity in the event of illness etc.
