We are on the eve of Analogue Switch Off for Television, which will leave frequencies clear, for both Digital Audio Broadcasting and for a 4G mobile network. These two things may change the way audio content is broadcast and consumed.   • History of the DVB Project
    History of the DVB Project (This article was written by David Wood around 2013.) Introduction The DVB Project is an Alliance of about 200 companies, originally of European origin but now worldwide. Its objective is to agree specifications for digital media delivery systems, including broadcasting. It is an open, private sector initiative with an annual membership fee, governed by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Until late 1990, digital television broadcasting to the home was thought to be impractical and costly to implement. During 1991, broadcasters and consumer equipment manufacturers discussed how to form a concerted pan-European platform to develop digital terrestrial TV. Towards the end of that year, broadcasters, consumer electronics manufacturers and regulatory bodies came together to discuss the formation of a group that would oversee the development of digital television in Europe. This so-called European Launching Group (ELG) expanded to include the major European media interest groups, both public and private, the consumer electronics manufacturers, common carriers and regulators. It drafted the MoU establishing the rules by which this new and challenging game of collective action would be played. The concept of the MoU was a departure into unexplored territory and meant that commercial competitors needed to appreciate their common requirements and agendas. Trust and mutual respect had to be established. The MoU was signed by all ELG participants in September 1993, and the Launching Group renamed itself as the Digital Video Broadcasting Project (DVB). Development work in digital television, already underway in Europe, moved into top gear. Around this time a separate group, the Working Group on Digital Television, prepared a study of the prospects and possibilities for digital terrestrial television in Europe.

    Submission to the Future of Media Commission By Communicorp Media January 2021 Executive Summary Communicorp Media reaches 1.75 million weekly listeners and has a significant online, digital, and social audience. Independent Radio has 2.5 million listeners daily, close to double the daily reach of RTÉ Radio. Communicorp Media and Independent Radio have 800,000 more listeners aged Under 45 than RTÉ Radio and are vitally important in reaching a younger audience. 376,000 people listen to Communicorp Media radio stations only. Communicorp Media provides more than 12,000 hours of Public Service Content a year. Public Service Broadcasting is about the content broadcast rather than the ownership of the broadcaster. RTÉ is not the only provider of Public Service Broadcasting. Radio scored a trust rating of 79% in a recent IPSOS MRBI poll. This compares to 29% for Facebook and 34% for Twitter, showing radio’s importance in an era where fake news is prevalent. 70% of daily radio listening is to a non RTÉ service. This shows content on Independent Radio has a distinct public value. Digital now accounts for 54% of all advertising spend in Ireland with Google and Facebook controlling 40% of the market. Radio advertising spend is down nearly 30% in the last ten years. As you say, we’re attracting 15.4 million listeners every week, and I think it’s because I try to keep a balance of the best of the best new music, with classic tracks from a whole range of eras, way back to the 60s and 70s. So I think it’s that challenge of just making that mix work and making it work in terms of daytime, and not only just keeping a kind of core audience happy, but appealing to a new audience who would find that exciting and fun to listen to.
