- Press release - Peaches Does Sherman Wednesday, 10 February 2016, 7:30 pm me Collectors Room Berlin / Olbricht Foundation Auguststrasse 68, 10117 Berlin Opening hours: Tue–Sun, 12–6 p.m. The Canadian singer and musician discusses the Cindy Sherman exhibition and her new album Rub Moderation and concept: Florian Werner Musician, singer, and filmmaker Peaches is one of the most prominent admirers of Cindy Sherman’s photographs. Numerous parallels run through the artists’ work: Both focus on the use of their own bodies in uncompromising, extreme, erotic, and sometimes humourous ways. Both masterfully transform their bodies into supra-individual characters using masks, costumes, and gestures. These transformations raise powerful questions relating to identity and stereotypes, sexuality and gender, the male gaze, and the perception of artists in our society. On the occasion of the exhibition ‘Cindy Sherman – Works from the Olbricht Collection’ (on view until 10 April 2016) in me Collectors Room Berlin, Peaches will join writer Florian Werner in a conversation on her fascination with Sherman’s work, the relationship between Peaches’ own art and Sherman’s photographs, as well as her new album Rub. Since the release of her album The Teaches of Peaches (2000), Peaches has gained a reputation as one of today’s most provocative and glamorous pop stars. Under the title Peaches Christ Superstar she staged Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical as a one-woman show, and later sang the lead part in a production of a Monteverdi opera. In 2012 she released her first full-length motion picture film Peaches Does Herself, and in 2015 she collaborated on the book of photographs What Else Is In the Teaches of Peaches. -

Cross-Dressing to Backbeats: The Status of the Electroclash Producer and the Politics of Electronic Music Feature Article David Madden Concordia University (Canada) Abstract Addressing the international emergence of electroclash at the turn of the millenium, this article investigates the distinct character of the genre and its related production practices, both in and out of the studio. Electroclash combines the extended pulsing sections of techno, house and other dance musics with the trashier energy of rock and new wave. The genre signals an attempt to reinvigorate dance music with a sense of sexuality, personality and irony. Electroclash also emphasizes, rather than hides, the European, trashy elements of electronic dance music. The coming together of rock and electro is examined vis-à-vis the ongoing changing sociality of music production/ distribution and the changing role of the producer. Numerous women, whether as solo producers, or in the context of collaborative groups, significantly contributed to shaping the aesthetics and production practices of electroclash, an anomaly in the history of popular music and electronic music, where the role of the producer has typically been associated with men. These changes are discussed in relation to the way electroclash producers Peaches, Le Tigre, Chicks on Speed, and Miss Kittin and the Hacker often used a hybrid approach to production that involves the integration of new(er) technologies, such as laptops containing various audio production softwares with older, inexpensive keyboards, microphones, samplers and drum machines to achieve the ironic backbeat laden hybrid electro-rock sound. Through this analysis I focus specifically on three distinct spheres; perfonnance, fandom and use of technology to argue that her critique of sexual conventions provides an cxpansive and transgressive new defmition of female sexuality. Musical perfonnances by female artists, particularly icons such as Madonna and Britney Spears, have demonstrated popular culture's inability to legitimize quecr and non compulsory heterosexual practices. -

Shea 2020 Abstract This dissertation explores the relationship between guitar performance and the functional components of musical organization in popular-music songs from 1954 to 2019. Under an ecological theory of affordances, three distinct interdisciplinary approaches are employed: empirical analyses of two stylistically contrasting databases of popular-music song transcriptions, a motion-capture study of performances by practicing musicians local to Columbus, Ohio, and close readings of works performed and/or composed by popular- music guitarists. Each offers gestural analyses that provide an alternative to the object- oriented approach of standard popular-music analysis, as well as clarification on issues related to style, such as the socially determined differences between “pop” and “rock” music. ii Dedication To Anna Gawboy, who is always in my corner. iii Acknowledgments Here I face the nearly insurmountable task of thanking those who have helped to develop this research. This interview with BRUCE BOTNICK, co-producer of “Forever Changes” by Love,” was conducted by the Library of Congress on August 10, 2016. Bruce Botnick LIBRARY OF CONGRESS: Legend has it that there was a lot of in-fighting among the members of Love at the start of this album’s recording. Is that true? Did you know that going in? And how did you mitigate that? BRUCE BOTNICK: I tried not to get too involved in the drama. The reason we brought in the Wrecking Crew [a group of talented studio musicians working in LA at the time] was that the band really was just not together; they didn’t have a common purpose. Arthur [Lee] was actually starting to look to replacing parts of the band but never verbally said it out loud, but the band could feel it. So, in this instance, when we brought in the Wrecking Crew, it rattled the band’s cage a bit, causing them to come to the front and then they played really well. They didn’t want to end up not being part of the album. LOC: You have worked with both the Doors and Love. Can you compare your studio experiences with both groups? BB: With the Doors you had four individuals who were one. With Love, you had one individual—Arthur Lee. Arthur wrote most of the music and the lyrics. The record was all Arthur’s, except for the two songs Bryan MacLean wrote, “Alone Again Or.” and the beautiful and haunting “Old Man.” But Arthur was it. -
